The Sebring Winter Test is now underway and with all the news coming out of Central Florida and other parts of the world, a quick round up of news was in order. Here’s what’s going on now:

 

2011 Le Mans Anniversary Corvette Z06 to be Auctioned at Barrett-Jackson

At the Corvette Museum’s 2010 C5/C6 Bash, GM unveiled a special 2011 Corvette Z06 that was a tribute to Corvette’s 50th Anniversary of racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Painted white with blue racing stripes, the Z06 Corvette matches the livery of the 1960 Briggs Cunningham Corvette that won its class and finished 8th overall. The NCM announced today that the 2011 Le Mans Anniversary Corvette Z06 will be auctioned next week at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction and the proceeds will go to the NCM’s planned 500-acre motorsports park.

Luc Alphand to Retire Corvette Racing Program

Luc Alphand and his racing team Alphand Aventures carried the flag for Corvette in Europe since 2006. His white GT1 Corvettes were a mainstay at Le Mans as much as the factory yellow C6.Rs. A crash while competing in the Rand’Auvergne all-terrain motorcycle race last year resulted in severe back injuries and now the former champion downhill skier has decided to retire from motorsports.

When Lance Miller set out to return the #3 Briggs Cunningham 1960 Corvette and its driver John Fitch to Le Mans for the 50th anniversary of the cars win, he was accompanied by Corvette collector and documentary filmmaker Michael Brown who captured the experience in HD. A fall release of the feature-length documentary as well as a book are expected. While we wait, a trailer of the coming film has been released.

Corvette Racing Returns to High-Speed Wisconsin Road Course

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Two events occurred in 1955 that would forever change the face of American road racing: Chevrolet introduced its new small-block V-8 engine, and the good citizens of Elkhart Lake, Wis., opened a new road racing circuit near their quiet rural town. The Chevy small-block went on to become America’s most successful production-based racing engine, and Road America became one of the world’s most revered race tracks. On Sunday, August 22, Road America will host the seventh round of the 2010 American Le Mans Series, and the roar of Corvette Racing’s 5.5-liter V8s will echo through the rolling hills of the Wisconsin countryside.

With excitement and adrenaline running high, the team once again put forth their best efforts, only to watch misfortune strike again. Luc Alphand Gives Tour of GT1 Corvette Garage at Le Mans

Luc Alphand’s Corvette team had two GT1 Corvettes at the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans. In this video, he gives a behind the scenes tour showing the layout of his garage and introducing us to key personnel. With Luc’s Corvettes being former Corvette Racing chassis, we see representatives from Pratt and Miller and Katech who were on-hand to monitor the car’s performance during the race.

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1960 Briggs Cunningham Corvette

Earlier this month, the 1960 #3 Briggs Cunningham Corvette and driver John Fitch returned to Le Mans to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the car’s win in the GT class and 8th place finish overall. Our friend Jan Hyde from The Registry of Corvette Racecars was there along with car owner Lance Miller, restorer Kevin Mackay and John Fitch and he provided this recap from the week of events.
