IMSA Introduces New Balance of Performance Process in GTLM, GTD Classes

Mention IMSA and Balance of Performance testing and most Corvette Racing enthusiasts roll their eyes while muttering about how arbitrary and unfair the process has been to our C7.Rs. That’s because the previous BoP calculations only took into account timing and scoring data. But for 2016, the process has changed significantly thanks to a new system of individual data loggers which are mandatory on all GTLM and GTD cars.

Corvette Racing to Switch to E20 Fuel in 2016


Racing teams in IMSA’s GTLM class will have a new fuel blend available in 2016 as the North American racing league moves to provide similar fuel options to those used at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The new blend is E20 (20 percent ethanol, 80 percent gasoline) and it will join E10 and E85 cellulosic fuels already available to cars in GTLM.

We don’t know how much a petition will help solve the inequities of IMSA’s balance of performance adjustments that seem to have knocked Chevrolet and Corvette Racing out of the top spot in the Manufacturers and Driver’s championships for the second year in a row, but at this point we are willing to try anything to get the attention of IMSA’s top brass.

When Corvette Racing began their factory-backed effort in 1999, few if any truly expected the kind of dominating success that the racing team would come to embody. Looking back on 15 years of racing, the team has raced three different of generations of Corvettes from the C5-R to the C7.R. Along the way they earned the most all-time victories and 1-2 finishes in American Le Mans Series history including an ALMS-best 10 team championships, 10 manufacturer championships and seven class wins at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
