1962 Gulf Oil Corvette Race Car Sells for $1.65 Million at RM Sotheby's

RM Sotheby’s handled the auction duties in selling the Andrews Collection in Houston over the weekend and now we have some results to report on several significant vehicles that were sold. Nine Corvettes were offered for sale in the collection which ranged from a first-year 1953 Corvette to a 1966 Corvette Convertible.

Leading the Corvette sales was the 1962 Corvette Racer that was formerly campaigned in the SCCA by Gulf Oil and the driven by the legendary Dr. Dick Thompson. That car sold for $1.65 million.

Paul Andrews and his son, Chris, have spent years building one of the world’s best collections of classic vehicles.

Now they want to sell off many of their prized cars to whittle their impressive collection down to a more manageable 15 to 20 cars that they can focus on and enjoy with their family.

Some 75 of their cars and a wide assortment of memorabilia will be auctioned off May 2 in Fort Worth, Texas by RM Sotheby’s.

One of the cars to be auctioned is their 1962 Corvette Gulf Oil race car – with no reserve. Estimated value of the car is $2 million to $2.75 million.

Last weekend marked the 4th installment of Bloomington Gold’s Great Hall. The 4th class of honorees was one of the best yet. The Corvette inductees included the legendary 1963 Grand Sport, the first big block, and the mighty 2009 ZR-1. The people and organizations category featured the godfather of the Corvette, the founder of Carlisle Events, and the Flying Dentist among others.

The 1961 Corvette Gulf Oil race car was one of the centerpieces of Mecum’s 2012 Kissimmee auction and it drew massive attention when it hit the auction block Saturday afternoon. Bidding on the Grady Davis Gulf Oil-sponsored Corvette was fast and furious at the beginning but eventually stalled at $850,000 and the car went unsold. The reserve was undisclosed and the auctioneer only said that it would take “more”.
