We first told you about this highly decorated 1969 L88 convertible back in August 2012 when it was about to cross Mecum’s Anaheim auction block. There it was bid to $550,000 and did not sell. Last week it traversed Gooding and Co’s Scottsdale auction stage and hammered sold for $750,000. Throw in the 10% buyer’s fee and the new owner wrote a check for $825,000 to take this baby home.
Gooding and Company
Next up in our Corvette Enthusiast’s Preview of the Scottsdale Auctions, we review the Corvettes available from Gooding and Company.
Gooding & Company focuses on “blue chip” investment cars and usually sets a few world record prices each year in Scottsdale. Gooding is known for selling exceptional quality classic automobiles and producing the highest prices paid for exotic cars at such esteemed venues as Pebble Beach and Amelia Island in addition to Scottsdale and they have the statistics to back up those claims. The average price realized for a car throughout 2012 was $640,635 per car.
This rare Corvette racer is one of just 10 “big tank” Corvettes assembled in 1960. At the 12 hours of Sebring that year the “Race Rat” won its class, finished 16th overall, and was the only Corvette to finish in the top 25. It’ll cross the block on March 9th, 2012 at Gooding and Company’s Amelia Island sale.
We’ve finally reached the end of a frenzied month of collector car auctions in Florida and Arizona. Our DVR is still smoldering from the 72 hours of recording over the last couple of weeks. Since Top 10 lists can be a little cliché, we’ve sifted through all of the results and compiled a list of the top 11 January Corvette sales.
Our final preview at the January collector car auctions will focus on the activities at Gooding and Company’s and RM Auctions’ camps. You already know about 1953 VIN #5 crossing the block at RM, but they’ve also got an early Pilot 1954 in addition to an original Monaco Orange 1969 L88 Coupe up for grabs at Gooding and Company.
RM and Gooding only have a total of 9 Corvettes combined on their dockets, but what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality.
The month of January means one thing to avid car collectors – the January auctions. Each year thousands of eager buyers and sellers convene on Arizona and Florida to take in all of the intense auction action. Read on to check out our summary of all the major January auctions, when they occur, and how Corvettes they’ve currently got consigned.
