GM Fires the Corvette Assembly Plant's Longtime UAW President Eldon Renaud

The leader of the UAW chapter that authorized a potential strike at the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant back in April has been fired by General Motors after 46 years as an employee.

Eldon Renaud, president of Bowling Green’s United Auto Workers Local 2164 for the past 32 years, had been leading the union’s recent concerns over safety and other issues at the Kentucky plant, where the highly popular seventh-generation Stingrays are being built.

St. Louis Today has an interesting article and an accompanying video about former St. Louis General Motors employees who transferred to Bowling Green in the 1980’s to keep their jobs assembling the Corvette. The transition from St. Louis to Bowling Green wasn’t particularly smooth for the transplanted UAW members as GM had promised new jobs to local Warren County residents. But many of those jobs failed to materialize as over 900 workers from St. Louis took advantage of a relocation offer and moved to Bowling Green with the Corvette.

Kentucky Approves tax Incentives for GM Project in Bowling Green

Since 1981, Bowling Green has been the home of Corvette production and it looks like the Kentucky assembly plant is on tap to build the next generation Corvette as well. According to a report from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority, GM is considering a possible $131.1 million project at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. To help sway the manufacturer, the board announced it was offering the automaker $7.5 million in incentives for the new project.
