Some people have really cool jobs. Just ask Edmunds Inside Line Road Test Editor Chris Walton who found an excuse to play with three special Corvettes at Willow Springs Raceway. Billed as the Corvettemegeddon Comparison, Chris drove a prototype of the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon edition, a 2010 Grand Sport Coupe and a 2002 Z06 and put the three sports cars through a series of high performance tests. As one of the partners in the Race to Win Corvette Sweepstakes, AutoWeek’s Editorial Director Dutch Mandel was able to sit down with Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter and Corvette Racing’s Engineering Director Doug Louth. The two engineers discussed the individual aspects of the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition and how cascade engineering with the racing program has created the best track Corvette yet.

Edmunds took a Viper SRT-10 and a 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon prototype out to a track to determine which car could lay the longest burnout. Finally, a comparision test I can get excited about! Both cars got three attempts and their tire marks were measured. Josh Jacquot was the driver for this non-scientific test and although he was bullish on the Viper from the get-go, it was the Velocity Yellow Z06 Corvette that left the biggest (and longest) impression.

Kirk Bennion – GM’s Corvette Exterior Design Engineer – attended the 30th Annual Corvette Beach Caravan and Car Show in Panama City hosted by the Circle City Corvette Club at the end of March. In his presentation, Kirk shows the evolving design of the Corvette that became the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition. You’ll see a couple of designs that didn’t make the cut as well as learn how the movie “Underworld” played a role in creating the overall look of the Z06 Carbon.

Saturday Night at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Palm Beach, Rick Hendrick of NASCAR fame purchased the first retail (VIN 001) 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon limited edition. The hammer price was $270,000 and with buyers commission, the total sale was $297,000. Rick will be able to tour the GM Performance Build center in Wixom as well as watch the assembly of his new Corvette Z06 later this summer in Bowling Green.

The first retail 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition will be auctioned to the highest bidder at Barrett-Jackson’s Collector Car Event in Palm Beach, Florida on April 3rd. The Winning bidder will also be able to tour the GM Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI where the hand-built LS7 and LS9 engines are assembled and the winner can watch the car be assembled at the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green.
