GM to Invest $439 Million for a New Corvette Paint Shop
Photo by AJ Mast for Chevrolet

If you happen to buy a new Corvette in roughly two years, you can likely thank the previous customers of the seventh-generation Stingray for your improved paint job.

The overwhelming success of the new Corvette, introduced in 2014, no doubt heavily influenced General Motors’ announcement today that it will be investing $439 million at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, most of which will go to a new Corvette paint shop that will include “substantial technology upgrades,” according to GM.

We treat our Corvettes like babies.

Now this video produced by ExxonMobil takes a behind-the-scenes look at the Corvette “birthing” process, including the first bottle given to the new “infant” – full of Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil, not milk!

The video is particularly significant now because Chevrolet just produced the 600,000th Corvette filled with Mobil 1 motor oil, a feat that took 21 years to accomplish.

Autoblog’s Car Club USA takes a look at a different car club or event from across the United States in each episode.

Winter Storm Forces Closure of the Corvette Assembly Plant and National Corvette Museum

Anyone who had been hoping to see their Corvette Stingray or Z06 roll down the assembly line Tuesday will have to wait at least one more day.

That’s because of the havoc being created by winter storm Octavia that has already dumped more than 6 inches of snow from Missouri to Kentucky, forcing General Motors to shut down the second shift at the Corvette Assembly Plant on Monday night and both shifts on Tuesday. (Maintenance crews were told to report for their regular shifts, however.)

We Corvette enthusiasts are passionate about our cars.

That leads some of us to pay extra to pick up our new Corvette at the National Corvette Museum, and still others of us to open our wallets even wider and pay to actually see our very own new Corvette being put together at the assembly plant in Bowling Green.

Now some owners will be able to take it to the next level and actually build the engine that will reside under the hood of their 2015 Z06!

The First 2015 Corvette Z06s Are Now being Shipped to Customers

It appears that Chevrolet is happy with the start of production of the C7 Corvette Z06 – so much so that that customer cars have started to ship to customers from the assembly plant in Bowling Green.

When the Stingray was launched last year, Chevrolet delayed the shipping as the automaker pursued an aggressive quality assessment regiment to insure everything was just right and some customer cars were held well over a month. Now, just three weeks after the start of production, the all-new Corvette Z06s are on their way to dealers and the Corvette Museum for customer delivery.

Bowling Green Named a Top 10 All-American City by National Geographic

The new Corvette Stingray has been racking up award after award in the past couple of years.

Now the city where the seventh-generation Chevrolet sports car is assembled is finally getting some much-deserved recognition, too.

National Geographic has named Bowling Green, Ky., a Top 10 All-American City in its new book World’s Best Cities: Celebrating 220 Great Destinations because of the Corvette-related attractions there, including the Corvette Assembly Plant, National Corvette Museum, and NCM Motorsports Park.

The First Retail 2015 Corvette Z06 Has been Built and Other Corvette Production News

This week marks a special milestone for the 2015 Corvette Z06. The Corvette Assembly Plant just completed its first retail production of the new 650 horsepower Z06, a Black coupe that will go to Chevrolet dealer and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick.

Earlier this year, Hendrick paid one million dollars at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach to own the first retail VIN of the Corvette Z06 with the proceeds of that sale going to charity.
