Last weekend marked the 4th installment of Bloomington Gold’s Great Hall. The 4th class of honorees was one of the best yet. The Corvette inductees included the legendary 1963 Grand Sport, the first big block, and the mighty 2009 ZR-1. The people and organizations category featured the godfather of the Corvette, the founder of Carlisle Events, and the Flying Dentist among others.
Each year at Bloomington Gold there are several special groupings of Corvettes on display. This year we were especially looking forward to seeing the 2014 Corvette Stingray Pace Car from this year’s Indianapolis 500. Little did we know that the Pace Car Registry was assembling a collection of 1 example of every Corvette Pace Car that’s led the field at Indy.
Bloomington Gold’s long awaited move to Champaign, Illinois took place last weekend as the show celebrated its 40th anniversary there. It was a year of firsts in 2013: the first year in a new location, the first year for the GoldAutocross, the first year of a new judging schedule, and the first year for the C7’s to attend. Chevrolet’s Corvette officially turns 60 this weekend. It was June 30th, 1953 when that first Polo White two seater left the Flint, MI assembly plant. If you’re looking for a way to help celebrate Corvette’s 60 year legacy you’ve got several options this weekend. From Illinois to Kentucky to Detroit there are plenty of events taking place and we’ve neatly summarized them all for you after the break.
It’s the last full weekend in June which means one thing to Corvette enthusiasts – It’s Bloomington Gold weekend. That also means it’s time for the annual Mecum auction at Bloomington Gold. At last check there were just over 100 Corvettes consigned for this weekend’s sale in Champaign, Illinois. Mecum Bloomington Gold will take place this Saturday, June 29th on the Assembly Hall grounds on the University of Illinois campus as part of the Bloomington Gold Corvette show.
Sometimes just getting to a car show can be more difficult than winning.
Take, for example, this case of a truck carrying four Corvettes to the Bloomington Gold show in Champaign, Illinois.
When Bloomington Gold announced that they were moving to Champaign, IL after 10 years St. Charles, IL they did so in order to facilitate bigger and better Corvette-related events like an improved GoldTour. Now they’ve taken the wraps off of their Corvette-only Gold Autocross making its debut at this year’s show.
We’ve stumbled across another cool unrestored Corvette listed on eBay. Early last week we found the 1953 Survivor up for bids and now we’ve got this silver 327/350hp 1966 convertible seeking a new home. The hidden roadster was pulled from a barn in 2010 and claimed a Bloomington Gold Survivor Award in 2012.
Each year at the Bloomington Gold Corvette show attendees have the opportunity to increase their Corvette knowledge in a variety of areas in the GoldSchool. This year they’ve revamped the program slightly and will hold all of the classes on Friday June 28th. Click past the break for a complete rundown of the classes available this year.
The 2013 rendition of the Bloomington Gold Corvette show is just about 4 months away and now’s the time to sign up if you’re planning on attending or showing a car. Registration for this year’s show opens up on Friday, February 15th. The June 28-30th festival of Corvettes will be held for the first time this year on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign.
