Auction Results: Corvettes at Carlisle High Bid List

by Keith Cornett on September 12, 2006

The following is a list of Corvettes that were featured in the Corvettes at Carlisle auction that did not reach the reserve selling price. There are two Corvettes on the list that I’d be interested in knowing more about. The first is a 1967 Maroon Corvette that received a high bid of $220,000. Not out the the range for an L71 427/435 Tri-Power, but I am betting it’s something else. The second is a 1971 Orange Corvette that reached $95,000 and was still a no sale. As that high bid was nearly $40,000 more than our High Price for 1971 Corvettes in this year’s edition of the Vette-N-Vestments Corvette Price Guide, I am betting it was either a ZR1 (8 produced) or the ZR2 (12 produced). Because of their limited production, several years can pass between the time we see these rare Corvettes for sale. If anyone has any information on these two Corvettes, please let me know. Auction Results: Corvettes at Carlisle

by Keith Cornett on September 11, 2006

Pennsylvania was the place to be in late August as Corvettes converged on the fairgrounds at Carlisle for the annual Corvettes at Carlisle show. Mecum handled the auction duties and once again the show proved to be one of the top Corvette auctions in the United States. Over 150 Corvettes crossed the auction block and the show had a 53% sales rate raking in over $3 million in Corvettes sales. Looking at the list of Corvettes that sold, it is nice to see the values of these sales weren’t astronomical and based on pricing only, it appears that there were some pretty decent deals. Of notable cars, three 1954′s were auctioned off for $46K, $69K and $70K. A couple other C1′s sold for under $40,000 including a Black 59 that sold for $35,963 and a maroon 1962 which sold for $38,325. Other good buys include a 1964 Corvette at $29,400, a Yellow 1966 which sold for $28,350 and 1969 Corvette that went for $9,500. Here is the complete list of Corvettes that sold during the Corvettes at Carlisle auction:

Video: 50 Years of Corvette Racing

by Keith Cornett on September 7, 2006

50 Years of Corvette RacingGM released the following video in conjunction with the 50 year anniversary of Corvette racing. The video highlights the 50th anniversary by first focusing on Corvette’s class win at LeMans earlier this year, their fifth win in six years, and then discusses how the new Z06 was developed alongside the LeMans-winning race car, sharing many of the same technologies. My favorite part of the clip is the early footage showing Corvette’s first Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov and discussing how his strategy for Corvette Racing “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” worked famously for Chevrolet. Historical footage shows C1 Corvettes racing a Sebring and LeMans. Click here to view 50 Yeas of Corvette Racing Source: GM via MediaLink

GM Extends Corvette’s Warranty Coverage

by Keith Cornett on September 6, 2006

The new GM Warranty websiteEarlier this year, GM’s Vice Chairman asked readers of the FastLane blog for input on their turnaround. Overwhelmingly, readers pointed to the quality issue as a major concern when buying a GM car or truck. What is telling about GM’s turnaround is the fact that they are listening to their customers and are addressing their concerns. Today GM announced that beginning with the 2007 model year, it will be extending its powertrain warranty in the United States and Canada to five years or 100,000 miles. Previously the warranty was three years or 36,000 miles. The warranty is transferable and has no deductible. GM is also extending the roadside assistance and courtesy transportation programs to five years or 100,000 miles. These changes apply to Corvette as well as every passenger car and truck across GM’s eight divisional brands. In addition to the powertrain warranty, GM still provides three year or 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty for the Corvette and other Chevrolets, GMCs, Pontiacs and Saturns. Buicks and Cadillacs get a four year or 50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. GM will begin promoting the new warranties during Thursday night’s NFL season opener between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins. Also, a dedicated web site (www.gm.com/warranty) is available for you to read up on the coverage. Source: GM Fastlane Blog | GM Warranty

Crikey! Corvette Sting Ray Getting A Bad Rap

by Keith Cornett on September 5, 2006

Since the untimely death of Australian Zoo director Steve Irwin at the hands, er, barb of a stingray was announced Sunday, I knew the comparisons of fish and Vette were bound to happen. As the Beach Boys say, fuel injected Sting Rays are only deadly when you’re a 413. But this was a freak accident and for someone like Steve Irwin who faced death more than once, at least he died doing something he loved. So leave it to the Jalopnik’s to come up with Steve Irwin’s Revenge, a video of a classic Sting Ray loosing it on the strip when racing against a Dodge Viper. Their reasoning? Steve loved reptiles more than a flappy fish. Well, I concur on their final wish. Rest in peace, Steve.

CorvetteBlogger.com: Essential Posts

by Keith Cornett on September 4, 2006

Now that I’ve been blogging about Corvettes for a bit over a year, I thought I would create a page where visitors can find a list of what I consider my best posts. If you look at our site nav box to the right you will see a link titled “Essential Posts“. I gathered some 10-12 posts over the previous year and have grouped them together on that one page. The idea being that readers may want to go back and look at some the articles I’ve written and see what I am all about. As new posts are deemed “essential”, they will be added to the page.

When Customizing Corvettes Goes Too Far

by Keith Cornett on September 1, 2006

One of the timeless debates about classic Corvettes revolves around modding/customization versus the pursuit of Matching Numbers restoration. We see these conversations all the time on some of the forums and people are usually quite passionate on both sides of the debate.

by Keith Cornett on August 31, 2006

2007 Z06 Corvette at NCMThe National Corvette Museum announced today that on Thursday, September 7th, they are planning to deliver the 5,000th Corvette to a customer, who will be taking delivery of a 2007 Velocity Yellow Coupe. The R8C Delivery Program has been a mainstay at the Museum since 1995, but the option has really taken off in the last year. Their Corvette is on display and friends and family can watch the delivery via the NCM website on a series of webcams. The Delivery Team provides an orientation and presentation of the vehicle and a unique Gold Decal is placed on the drivers door jamb to signify the importance of the event. New owners are also presented with a one year NCM membership. As a participant of the R8C Delivery program, owners are invited back every other year for a special event called the R8C Museum Delivery/NCM Xperience. This year’s event will be held September 29-30th. Source: National Corvette Museum
