I just received an email from David at Kerbeck Corvettes with the latest constraints on ordering new 2009 Corvettes from the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. Corvettes ordered this week are expected to be built the week of June 30th.

2009 Corvette Coupes and Convertibles:
Constraints are limited to the two new colors. 57U Cyber Grey Metallic and 17U Blade Silver Metallic are both limited to 50 units nationally this week.

2009 Corvette Z06:
Constraints are again limited to the two new colors. 57U Cyber Grey Metallic and 17U Blade Silver Metallic are both limited to 16 units nationally this week.

2009 Corvette ZR1:
No news yet on allocations for the ZR1. Stay tuned…

David also mentions that the constraints on these two new Corvette colors are just temporary and the limits may only be in place for one or two more weeks as the factory ramps up its 2009 Corvette production.

If you’re in the market for a 2009 Corvette or perhaps you’re interested in spending your summer tooling around town in a new 2008 Corvette, please call Dave Salvatore of Kerbeck Corvette at 1-877-537-2325. Make sure you tell him CorvetteBlogger sent you!

2008 Corvette Convertible

Strategic Vision has released their annual Total Quality Awards and the 2008 Corvette Convertible won the “Convertibles over $30,000″ class besting 3 models from Mercedes-Benz and the BMW Z4 Roadster with a score of 940. This is the second year in row that the Corvette Convertible has won this class, and like last year, finished second overall behind the 950 scored by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Luxury Sedan. The score represents new vehicle owner satisfaction.

The top 5 of the Convertibles over $30,000:

  1. Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (940)
  2. Mercedes-Benz SL (939)
  3. Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet (909)
  4. BMW Z4 Roadster (907)
  5. Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster (891)

A number of prominent 2008 cars were not included in the results as Strategic Vision claims that the sample size of respondents for a specific model was not sufficient to be included.

Quality and owner satisfaction are two hallmarks of the latest generation of Corvettes. This year’s total quality index score of 940 is up 10 points over 2007′s quality score of 930.

Chevrolet also scored a class win in large pickups with two models tying for the top class score. The Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 and the Silverado 1500 both had a total qaulity index score of 880.

Tony Stewart and a C6 Corvette

I finally caught this ArmorAll commercial over the weekend on SPEED and thought it hit the mark in so many ways. NASCAR’s Tony Stewart? Cool. A Black Corvette? Very Cool! The stop-n-stare moment you share with your Corvette following a good detailing? Priceless!

If you liked this commercial, there is a “Making Of” video on YouTube.com

Ferrari Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen

Ferrari’s F1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen paid $200,000 Euros or $329,326 USD for Sharon Stone’s 1974 Corvette at the Amber Fashion Show in Monaco this weekend. The auction was part of the F1 race festivities this weekend at Monte Carlo’s Meridien Beach plaza. The celebrity auction raised approximately $1.65 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The 1974 Corvette is said to have just four miles on the odometer and is stored in Los Angeles. The $329,326 USD is certainly one of the highest if not the highest amount paid for a 1974 Corvette.

This is the second time Stone’s 1974 Corvette has been offered in an Elton John Foundation auction. Earlier this year the Corvette was a no-sale after a hapless participant at Elton John’s post-Oscar party and auction opened the bidding at $1 million, thinking he would be outbid. Unfortunately no else did bid and he had to tell Stone that it was joke. From all accounts, she was not amused.

Kimi Raikkonen is the highest paid Formula 1 driver with a contract estimated to be $50 Million USD. In 2007 Kimi switched rides from McLaren to Ferrari and captured the Formula One Drivers Championships by one point.

LG Motorsports/Riley Technologies GT2 #28 Corvette

As the next ALMS race doesn’t take place until after the 24 Hours of Le Mans, we’ll take a look back to last weekend’s GT2 class at the Utah Grand Prix. The LG Motorsports/Riley Technologies #28 Corvette driven by Eric Curran and Lou Giglotti were in the hunt for their first podium finish for much of the race. The team is continuing to show improvement week to week and even the commentators from SPEED were impressed.

Performance adjustments allowed the team to shed some weight off the #28 Corvette and the car appeared to be much faster than some of the races we’ve seen over the previous weeks. As for the final results, the team came in 7th in the GT2 class which was their best class finish yet.

We’ll continue to follow Lou and the #28 Corvette as it battles the dominant Porsches and Ferraris in the ultra-competitive GT2 class.

1969 427/435 L89 Corvette Coupe

For six previous weekends, Dana Mecum has been holding court at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds and doing what he does best – selling Corvettes and muscle cars. Two weeks ago Mecum’s Muscle Cars & More series that aired on the HD Theater network ended with a night of Corvettes. So it was with some interest that I tuned in over the weekend of May 15-17th to see the group of Corvettes offered at the newly relocated Spring Classic. What struck me the most about the Spring Classic Corvettes was how affordable some of these cars were.

Over the four day auction we counted 53 Corvettes offered with 37 selling. That’s 70% of Corvettes that were offered were sold for a total of $1,457,300. That’s an average of $39,386 per Corvette.

The top sale and the only Corvette to break the $100,000 barrier was a White 1968 Corvette Coupe with an L89 427/435 aluminum-head engine, which sold for $115,000. This Corvette features just 9,865 original miles and comes with a bevy of awards and certifications including NCRS 4 Star Bowtie, NCRS National Top Flight, Bloomington Gold Survivor and Bench Certification and the Triple Crown Award.

Second on the top selling list was a 1962 Fawn Beige Corvette with a 327/360 Fuel Injected engine coupled to a 4-speed transmission. Sold for $90,000, the ’62 features a fresh body-off restoration by an NCRS member who has been judging solid axle Corvettes since 1997.

We also saw a number of midyear Corvettes selling at prices not seen recently. However we were not at the auction and the descriptions of some of these Corvettes are severely lacking in details. Having said that, 5 midyears out of 14 offered sold for under $40,000.

Early C3 Corvettes models were out in force at the Spring Classic. Six Corvettes from 1969 were offered with 5 selling. Helped by the high price of our L89 Top Seller, these Corvettes sold for an average of $55,900.

Here are the full results from the Mecum Spring Classic in Indianapolis:

Corvette Museum to Build Raceway

by Keith Cornett on May 21, 2008

The National Corvette Museum
The National Corvette Museum has recently purchased an additional 70 acres of land off Grimes Lane, near Porter Pike where they intend to build a motorplex park. The park will include a 1.5 mile drag strip, autocross track and a road course that will be used for the NCM’s driving school as well as other events hosted by the museum. The BGDailyNews.com reported that the cost of the land is being financed by the owners and construction of the estimated $2.5 million motorplex will not begin until the money has been raised and is in the bank. That’s good financial news considering the NCM is in the middle of a $10 million expansion of their current facility which will add a library and historical archives, meeting rooms and provide for additional parking. One of the creative fundraising ideas is to allow the “purchase” of an acre with the buyer receiving a fake deed. Naming rights for the facility are also being considered. Driving events at the Museum are currently coordinated with Beech Bend Raceway but due to the busy racing schedule, only about four NCM events are held there during the course of the year. NCM Director Wendall Strode says the new motorplex will not compete with Beech Bend. The Museum also currently has a certified driving instructor on the payroll. Ray Linkov currently serves as Events Manager for the Museum and with the addition of the motorplex, a whole slate of new driving and track events will probably be in the works.

The 2009 Corvette ZR1

Dealers, do you know where your 2009 Corvette ZR1 allocation letters are? We heard the letters were promised in “early May” and being so close to the date that the system will start accepting orders for the 2009 models, it’s unusual that they haven’t shown up yet. We already know that yearly production will be 2,000 units according to Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter, so what’s the holdup in letting dealers know their preliminary allocation numbers? It could very have something to do with pending legislation in Florida that would cause a ripple effect across the country for not only allocations of the Corvette ZR1 but the Z06 as well.

On May 1st, the Florida Legislature approved a bill pertaining to Motor Vehicle Dealers and their relationship with the licensees (ie manufactures) and sent it to the desk of Governor Charlie Crist for his signature. The 17 page bill, titled “CS for SB 2582” contains language that prohibits certain actions that licensees can take against a dealer including coercion to improve or relocate facilities or punishing dealers for selling motor vehicles knowingly to customers who intend to export them.

However, there are two sections of this bill that deal with fairness of allocations. It is specifically these two clauses that could effect the allocation of a limited production car like the 2009 Corvette ZR1. The worst case scenario is that no Florida Chevrolet dealers will receive the ZR1 because if GM makes one available to any dealer in Florida, than technically it would have to make one available to all dealers in the state, which is what it seems the bill requires.

The two clauses in “CS for SB 2582″ dealing with allocations are below with the relevant passages highlighted:

(18) The applicant or licensee has established a system of motor vehicle allocation or distribution or has implemented a system of allocation or distribution of motor vehicles to one or more of its franchised motor vehicle dealers which reduces or alters allocations or supplies of new motor vehicles to the dealer to achieve, directly or indirectly, a purpose that is prohibited by State Statute 320.60-320.70, or which otherwise is unfair, inequitable, unreasonably discriminatory, or not supportable by reason and good cause after considering the equities of the affected motor vehicles dealer or dealers. An applicant or licensee shall maintain for 3 years records that describe its methods or formula of allocation and distribution of its motor vehicles and records of its actual allocation and distribution of motor vehicles to its motor vehicle dealers in this state. As used in this subsection, “unfair” includes, without limitation, the refusal or failure to offer to any dealer an equitable supply of new vehicles under its franchise, by model, mix, or colors as the licensee offers or allocates to its other same line-make dealers in the state.

(22) The applicant or licensee has refused to deliver, in reasonable quantities and within a reasonable time, to any duly licensed motor vehicle dealer who has an agreement with such applicant or licensee for the retail sale of new motor vehicles and parts for motor vehicles sold or distributed by the applicant or licensee, any such motor vehicles or parts as are covered by such agreement. Such refusal includes the failure to offer to its same line-make franchised motor vehicle dealers all models manufactured for that line-make, or requiring a dealer to pay any extra fee, require a dealer to execute a separate franchise agreement, purchase unreasonable advertising displays or other materials, or relocate, expand, improve, remodel, renovate, or recondition, or alter the dealer’s existing facilities, or provide exclusive facilities as a prerequisite to receiving a model or series of vehicles. However, the failure to deliver any motor vehicle or part will not be considered a violation of this section if the failure is due to an act of God, work stoppage, or delay due to a strike or labor difficulty, a freight embargo, product shortage, or other cause over which the applicant or licensee has no control. An applicant or licensee may impose reasonable requirements on the motor vehicle dealer, other than the items listed above, including, but not limited to, the purchase of special tools required to properly service a motor vehicle and the undertaking of sales person or service person training related to the motor vehicle.

As the Corvette ZR1 is considered its own model, any dealer not allocated a ZR1 could technically invoke these clauses and force a claim against GM for violations. While the clauses would also apply to the Corvette Z06 because its also considered a “model”, our understanding of the bill is that special editions like the Indy 500 Pace Car replicas would be exempt as they are technically an option on a convertible or coupe, and not considered its own “model”.

It’s easy to see the dilemma that GM faces. General Motors has a mathematical formula for which of the 4,000+ Chevrolet dealers that would be able to sell the 2,000 Corvette ZR1s (not taking into consideration that some of that number is planned for export) and if this legislation is passed, GM may be forced to exclude the Sunshine state altogether from its ZR1 allocations unless they want to offer one to every Florida-based dealer first. As you can see, this decision could cause a ripple across the US with thousands of dollars of profit per ZR1 at stake.

We’ll be watching MyFlorida.com for announcement on whether this bill will be signed or vetoed.

Corvette Racing in Salt Lake City

Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen cruised to their third victory of the year at Sunday’s Utah Grand Prix at the Miller Motorsports Park outside of Salt Lake City. The #3 Corvette C6.R finished the two hour thirty minute race with a one-minute, 4.9-second victory over their #4 Corvette C6.R teammates Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin. O’Connell and Magnussen now hold an eight point lead (86-78) in the GT1 Drivers Championship.

This was a race that really wasn’t a race as the teams used the 3.048 road circuit as their final test and tune-up for next month’s 24 hours of Le Mans. Keeping the two Corvettes out of danger was the top priority and luckily they did just that. It was such a non-race that SPEED gave the Corvette Racing team just two and half minutes of direct coverage.

The two Corvette C6.Rs are now on their way back to Detroit where they will be cleaned up and then shipped to France later this week.

Corvette Racing’s next event is the 24 Hours of Le Mans in Le Mans, France, on June 14-15. The 76th running of the classic 24-hour endurance race on the 8.5-mile Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans will begin at 3 p.m. local time (9 a.m. EDT). Portions of the race will be televised live on SPEED.
