I’m not gonna lie. This video is a hard one to watch. The owner of C5 Corvette gets turned around and bangs into a wall somewhere on Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway. He may have thought his bad luck would end there, but he’s about to find out first hand the damage that can be done to a Corvette by a tow truck operator who’s primary mission is to clear the road, not the care and safety of the C5 Corvette in his possession.
Over the last few years, Chevrolet has utilized Barrett-Jackson to preview upcoming Camaro and Corvette production models by auctioning off one the cars before they are built. One of the most prolific buyers of these low VIN cars is Chevy dealer and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. Last year at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach auction, Hendrick purchased the first retail 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition. Although he could not be at this year’s auction in person, he was there in spirit, phoning in the winning bid of $175,000 to purchase VIN 100 of the upcoming 2012 Corvette Centennial Edition Z06. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.
GM’s VP of Global Design Ed Welburn was asked to put together his list of the top 10 Chevrolet’s ever produced as the company celebrates the 100 years since the founding of the brand. As head of the General Motors design studios, Welburn follows in the footsteps of legendary Chevy designers Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell. As such, Welburn picks are tightly focused on the heritage of style and innovation that resulted in some of the most iconic cars and trucks produced by the automaker. In his list of top 10 Chevys, two of Welburn’s picks are Corvettes.
One of the benefits of parking in the Corvette Corral at Sebring is the access you get to members of the Corvette Racing team. Every Friday afternoon prior to the Saturday start, Corvette Racing’s Program Manager Doug Fehan addresses the crowd. This year, he talked about the upcoming season, Johnny O’Connell and Tommy Milner and of course, the 12 hour race at Sebring.
2012 Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition to be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach on Saturday.
Chevrolet is an automotive company born from racing. Many of the iconic images we see of founder Louis Chevrolet are those of him at the track, racing the cars he himself designed and built. One hundred years later, Corvette carries the racing banner of its founding namesake and the 2012 Corvette Centennial Edition celebrates that performance heritage. Due in the summer of 2011, the Centennial Edition will be a package that will be available on all Corvette models including Grand Sports, Z06 and ZR1.
When one spends $1.25 million on a vintage Corvette that has won Top Flight, Bloomington Gold and most recently the Triple Diamond award, the last thing any sane person would do is turn it into a race car and take it to the race track. But that’s exactly what Pro Team Corvette president Terry Michaelis and collector Chuck Ungurean have planned to do with the Corvette they purchased last August at Mecum’s Monterey auction. And who better to drive the race-prepped Hanley Dawson Chevrolet Corvette in vintage ’67 livery than the original driver and Corvette Hall of Famer Tony DeLorenzo.
This morning we were tipped about a “mystery” Corvette or Camaro that will be auctioned this weekend at Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach. After digging around the interwebs and firing off a bunch of emails, it was our tweet to Corvette PR rep David Caldwell who confirmed that the 2012 Chevrolet on Barrett-Jackson’s run list was indeed a special edition Corvette.
