Corvette Debuts at GM's 1953 Motorama 58 Years Ago Today

They say that every legend has a beginning and that is certainly true of the Chevrolet Corvette. The first mass-produced fiberglass car made its public debut at the GM Motorama held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City on January 17, 1953. A crowd of 45,000 attendee’s saw Harley Earl’s Corvette dream car on opening day alone. The next day, Chevrolet announced the Corvette would enter production with 200-300 units of the 2-seater being made available to the public later that year.

St.Louis/Bowling Green Factory 1981 Corvettes Bookends

Article Contributed by Steve Burns

Each January marks the annual festival known as the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction. This year’s sale is significant as its Barrett-Jackson’s 40th anniversary event. Support events kicked off January 9th and hit full speed on January 15th. Included among the 1,000+ cars selling at no reserve are roughly 130 corvettes. Over the next few days we’ll take a look and some of the more significant Vettes crossing the block at Barrett-Jackson.

First up we’ll take a look at a couple of 1981 Corvette Coupes – Lots 441 and 441.1. Right now you’re probably wondering why we’re featuring a pair of 1981 Corvettes – especially 2 beige colored ones. If you caught B-J’s 2010 Las Vegas event, you’ll probably recall seeing this duo as they sold for charity for $300,000. The winning bidder promptly donated the cars back and here they are again for Scottsdale 2011.

[PIC] '07 Corvette Z06 Theft Recovery Is Missing A Few Items

I was perusing some Corvette salvage classifieds when I came across this ad for a 2007 Corvette Z06. It was listed as a theft recovery but obviously only part of the Corvette was recovered! This made for some interesting reading when describing the vehicle’s condition: Won’t Start, Missing Key. Dang! I was hoping to test drive it too.

The Corvette was first raced at Infineon Raceway in May 2002 by Ron Fellows and Kelly Collins, capturing a win at this first event. Chassis #005 would add wins at Mid-Ohio, Washington DC, Mosport and Petit Le Mans to close out the 2002 ALMS season. In 2003, Ron Fellows, Johnny O’Connell and Franck Fréon would pilot this C5R to a class win at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

2012 Chevy Sonic Selling Point: Suspension Tuned by Corvette Engineers

General Motors rolled out the new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic models earlier this week at the Detroit Auto Show. The sedan and hatchback models are powered by either a 1.8 liter four-cylinder or the Ecotec 1.4L turbo rated at 138 horsepower. But it was the suspensions we found interesting. Chevy says Corvette engineers provided their expertise in the ride and handling of the sub-compact.
