Mecum Auctions will be in Monterey, California this weekend for their annual August sale. The auction runs August 16-18 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course. Velocity will have 18 hours of live coverage of the auction. Nearly 60 Corvettes are scheduled to cross the block including a black 1968 L88 roadster, Mickey Thompson’s 1963 Z06, and a COPO 1967 convertible shown at the NY Auto Show.
We first told you about the Corvette-based SV 9 Competizione back in the summer of 2009. At that time there were plans to build as many as 1,000 of the custom coaches for just under $100,000 apiece. That was before SV Motors’ boss was indicted on investment fraud charges. It appears that just 4 of the carbon fiber-bodied cars were ever built. You’ve got your chance to score one member of that quartet at Mecum’s Monterey auction next week in California.
If you live up in Northwest Washington State, be on the lookout for a Nassau Blue 1965 Corvette Coupe and an all-original 1970 Chevelle SS that were stolen from a warehouse in Puyallup, south of Seattle. The two classic cars were owned by Gary Tucci and were stolen sometime last Wednesday night.
Each year on the Wednesday before the annual Woodward Dream Cruise Corvette enthusiasts gather to support the Open Hands Food Pantry in Royal Oak, MI. Over the last few years organizer Larry Courtney has grown the event from a one-day cruise down famous Woodward Avenue to a multi-day festival of all things Corvette. A dark red 1975 Corvette coupe was one of the victims of a six-garage fire during the night Tuesday in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago.
The police Bomb & Arson Unit is investigating the fire, but say no proof of arson has been uncovered yet.
The Corvette Racing program has really become the textbook case of how (and why) a car company goes racing. Not only does the Chevrolet Corvette benefit from the “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” strategy that Zora Duntov outlined nearly 60 years ago while making his case that Chevrolet needs to be a performance brand. Racing also provides a developmental role in validating the car and its individual systems. Those systems that can improve the performance of a car in a 24 hour race can just as well improve the performance of the production Corvette you’re driving on the street right now.
As we rapidly close in on the middle of August we also close on in the annual auction frenzy that takes place during Monterey Week. In the summer of 1960 Corvette Racing won the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans for the very first time. Racing legend Briggs Cunningham fielded 3 white, fuel injected C1′s numbered 1, 2, and 3 in the annual endurance race. Cars #1 and #2 didn’t finish, but number 3 went on to win its class and finish 8th overall.
