1974 Corvette Coupe

December 7, 2009

Chance Mayfield walked out of the Broadway Barn honky-tonk in Nashville on a night in November 1970 and found that his Nassau Blue 1965 Corvette Convertible had been stolen. The Corvette was worth about $2,200 at the time of the theft. With no insurance, Mayfield thought the Corvette was gone forever. Fast forward to this summer when a Detective from the Scottsdale Arizona police department called Mayfield to tell him they located the classic sting ray after a routine inspection revealed the stolen car.

The Corvette had passed through various collectors over the year and was recently sold for $65,000. The new buyer had taken the Corvette to the department of motor vehicles for an inspection. The inspector ran the VIN through the National Insurance Claims Bureau where it was listed as stolen in 1970.

Police have traced ownership of the Corvette from California back to New Jersey where it was sold in 2000. The business that sold the car has since closed.

Mayfield's insurance on the car had lapsed just before the theft and so no claim was ever paid. After four or five years following the theft, Mayfield had given up on ever seeing the car again. That's all changed now that the car has been recovered. Mayfield will be taking a trailer out to Arizona next week to bring home his new old Corvette.
