One of the most dominating Corvettes in auto racing history was sold over the weekend at Gooding & Company's Pebble Beach Auction for an astounding $1.485 million dollars. Grady Davis' Gulf Oil Racing Team purchased the Corvette in 1962 from Yenko Chevrolet and the car was campaigned by none other than "The Flying Dentist", Dr. Dick Thompson in the 1962 SCCA-A Production Class. In 14 races, the Gulf Oil '62 Corvette finished first in class 12 times including wins at Daytona and Sebring and captured the 1962 A-Production Championship.
Katech Performance, the supplier of engines to Corvette Racing's C6.R program as well as the Pratt & Miller C6RS has launched an exclusive package designed to put your Corvette Z06 on a diet and you in the winner's circle at the track. The new ClubSport package reduces the curb weight of a Corvette Z06 to 2,825 lbs (fully optimized) from the standard 3,180 lbs while improving grip, cornering, braking and downforce.
At 12:01 am this morning, the embargo was lifted and those lucky magazine and blogger stiffs who were invited by GM to the Milford test track (also known as the Lutzring) were free to post their experiences of driving the new 638 hp supercharged Corvette ZR1. And what a drive it must be. The four reviews that we link to after the jump toss around short missives like "best ever" and "total pussycat". Taking a poll of the reviewers found that they were "surprised", "shocked" and "blown away" by the driving experience the new Corvette ZR1 delivers, not only on the test track, but on the public roads as well.
Todd Schnitt usually discusses news, politics and other events including severe weather on his nationally syndicated radio show that's based out of Tampa. As a Corvette Z06 owner, Schnitt casually mentioned a couple months ago that he was going to be getting a 2009 Corvette ZR1. On Yesterday's show, he announced that his Cyber Grey Corvette ZR1 was on the production line and that photos of the car's assembly were provided by a friend at GM.
Tropical Storm/Hurricane Fay is bearing down on us in Tampa so I may not get much of a chance to write about Corvettes during the first part of this week. We're watching the storm track and I'm confident we'll come through it okay. I'm looking forward to getting back to work as we celebrate our third year of blogging about Corvettes. Wish us luck!

Update
The storm has steadily been tracking more to the east and is expected to make landfall between Ft. Myers and Naples and then cross the central part of the state around Lakeland and Orlando. It looks more like a rain event for the Tampa Bay area.
Here we go with another round of Friday's Featured Corvettes for Sale. We are closing in on the end of Summer and it's a buyer's market for Corvettes. You'll find the greatest selection of new, pre-owned and classic Corvettes at VetteFinders.com, the Internet's original Corvette classifieds website.
Now that the new King of the Hill has arrived, we are slowly making our way down the list of "Things to do in Corvette ZR1". Let's recap: Sell for $1 Million at Barrett-Jackson? Check! Kick the Nissan GT-R's ass on the Nurburgring? Check! Do a 100 yard burnout on the Milford test track? Check!
Folks in Michigan are getting all gitty about this weekend's Woodward Dream Cruise that runs through the heart of Detroit. From the look of Royal Oak's newest police interceptor, I'd say the cops should be pretty excited about the cruise as well. This Corvette Z06 in Jetstream Blue Metallic is actually a loaner from the General Motors Police Fleet and will be used to maintain law and order throughout the weekend. More photos after the jump.
Ever since Jim Moyer was little, he had an interest in all things mechanical. While serving in the Army back in 1964, he started building his first miniature engine, the coyotee 4-cylinder, which took nearly 30 years to complete. This isn't just a model, but an actual working engine capable of producing 11,000 RPMs. Today, Jim's current project is a 1/6th scale Chevrolet 327 cubic inch V8 modeled on the L76 365 hp engine found in 1964 Corvettes.
We know they like to do things big in Texas, but one Chevrolet dealer in Houston has gone all out by pricing a 2009 Corvette ZR1 on eBay for $185,000. With a retail price listed at $115,000 with options, that's $70,000 over MRSP. We're trying to call in to Suze Orman's show for her advice but I have a feeling I'd hear that shrill voice scream out "I Don't Think So!"
It's been a tough road this year for Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta, driver's of Corvette Racing's #4 C6.R. Having won just one race in seven tries, the team has been pushing hard but sometimes luck just isn't on your side. This weekend at the Generac 500 at Road America, the #4 team was running first in the GT1 class when Gavin went off-road in the high-speed Kink, crashing through a billboard and coming to a stop in a sand trap. Video after the jump.
Ron's 1970 Corvette was stolen from Brisbane, California on Sunday, July 20th. Stories of Corvettes stolen from their owners are always bad, but this one struck a nerve as the owner is a disabled veteran who owned the car for 32 years and had plans to leave it to his daughter when he can no longer drive.
Jalopnik got a tip from "the Auto Insider" about the corvette concept car spotted this summer during the filming of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It's been identified as GM's Corvette Centennial Design Concept. So it is a Corvette Concept car, just not the C7 Corvette Concept as some have been speculating.
One of the great things about the C6 is the bevy of aftermarket appearance accessories that allow owners to personalize their Corvettes to their own tastes. We turned to our friends at Ecklers Corvette Parts for a list of five popular C6 Corvette appearance modifications that most owners can install themselves with simple tools in just a few minutes.
Flipping through the channels over the weekend, I came across this little gem on a cable tv show. A viewer named Dan calls into The Suze Orman Show on CNBC and asks the financial diva if he can afford to buy the 2009 Corvette ZR1. In this same segment, Orman approves a $6,000 ring and a pair of $900 high heel shoes so why not grant Dan "the man" his dream car? But before Judge Orman rules, Dan has to present an overview of his finances. Watch the video after the jump.
There will be plenty of action this weekend as Corvette Racing returns to battle the Bell Motorsports Aston Martin DBR9 in Saturday's Generac 500 at Road America. But the real contest is happening the day before as the USA takes on England in the Tour de Road America, a winner take all bicycle race featuring Corvette Racing's Program Manager Doug Fehan (GoDoug) of Birmingham, Michigan vs #4 C6.R Corvette Driver Oliver Gavin of Yardly, England.
If you haven't yet seen Becky Anderson AKA Vette Girl tearing up some of the best tracks in America in a borrowed Corvette Z06, head over to the internet show's newly launched website, www.vettegirl.tv. The show is off to a fast start with five episodes already produced and posted, and they can all be viewed on the new site.
If you are in the market for Corvette ZR1, be thankful you live in the States where the new King of the Hill will retail for $105,000. Yes, we know dealers are adding upwards of $50,000 to the price of each new ZR1, but even at $150,000 its still a bargain compared to the recently announced European sticker price that effectly doubles the price of the ZR1.
A quick note of congratulations goes out to Corvette Racing's Ron Fellows who won the Nationwide Series NAPA 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal over the weekend. Fellows took an early pit stop and then gradually worked his way to the front. The race called 25 laps shy of 74 due to rain. Ron was driving the #5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet from Dale Earnhardt Jr's JR Motorsports. This was his fourth career Nationwide Series victory and the first time he's won a NASCAR race at Montreal.
Sales of New Corvettes continue to decline with July 2008 being one of the worst months on record in recent years. GM's July sales report show only 1,870 new Corvettes were delivered, a decline of -10.2% from June 2008 and -21.3% over July 2007. For the 2008 Calendar Year, 16,824 Corvettes have been delivered, a decline of -16.4% over the same six-month period in 2007.
We knew it was coming and GM didn't let us down. As soon as the 2009 Corvettes started hitting dealer showrooms, GM has announced a 0% financing offer on all new 2008 Corvette models including the Z06. This is a great opportunity for buyers to save thousands of dollars on interest payments as well as help dealers clear excess inventory to make way for the 2009 models.
With the factory-backed Corvette Racing team having the weekend off, we'll be watching the two Corvette privateer racing teams compete in the FIA-GT Championship at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium. The 4.3 mile track is one of the most historic and challenging in the world and with three Corvettes battling the likes of Maserati, Saleen, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin, its definitely a race worth watching. Unlike LeMans or the ALMS, there are no prototype classes so the GT1 cars will also be competing for the overall win.
Fate sure dealt a hand to this 1964 Corvette convertible. The car was the unfortunate target of a custom conversion back the 80's which saw the Sting Ray's body mated to a Jeep 4x4 chassis. To add insult to injury, the Corvette is now powered by an AMC V8 instead of its trusty Chevy 350. But who are we to judge a car on its minor imperfections. It hasn't stopped the ebayers as the Corvette has 15 bids with the high bid at $4500. Shows that you can slap a Corvette on just about anything and it will sell.
Kerbeck's Dave Salvatore posted on the Kerbeck Corvette blog a side by side comparison of a 2009 Blade Silver Metallic Corvette Z06 (right) next to a 2008 Machine Silver Corvette (left). The side by side gives us the best look yet at the new color and how it compares to last year's popular Machine Silver.
Dave Ressler, Chevrolet Dealer and the world's first 2009 ZR1 owner talks about his new Corvette and his now-famous $1 million dollar donation to the United Way of Southeast Michigan. GMNext takes us inside the Corvette assembly plant where we see the LeMans Blue #0001 Corvette ZR1 roll off the assembly line, performance tested and then moved to a special display with one of Dave's other Corvettes, 1953's #003.
