Name games are afoot for GM's Supercharged Corvette. First we had the Blue Devil. Then there was the SS and the Sting Ray. Now we have the Chevrolet Corvette Z07, this week’s new name from Automobile Magazine. That, of course, is speculation like all the names previously mentioned. Automobile Magazine went a step further though by publishing an image of a photochopped Z06 with elements inspired from the Corvette C6.R LeMans racer. Now that the name has a face, emotions of all kinds have been raised as one would expect from the legions of Corvette enthusiasts.
Quotes from the magazine:
"Tom Wallace has a 650 hp trick up his sleeve. A new super Corvette will build on Z06's 7.0 liter LS7 V8 that was developed in sync with the Corvette C6.R LeMans racer.""Supercharged to bump output by 145 hp."
"Huge hood vent aimed at killing front end lift."
"Chevy will undercut competition by pricing the Z07 at about $100,000."We think they'll go with Z07 or maybe Z06 R."
Already some are bemoaning the design saying that it will take more than a hood scoop and some air vents to get them to buy one. Might I remind them that the only exterior difference in 1967 between the 327/300 Corvette and the 427/435 Tri-Power was in fact the Stinger hood.
Might I also remind those getting their drawers in a bunch that this is an unofficial representation of a car by a magazine that wants to sell more magazines. Calm down folks!
Chevrolet has used the Z07 RPO code twice in its history of Corvettes. The Z07 first showed up as an RPO in 1973. The package included special front and rear suspension and heavy duty power front and rear brakes. It required the L82 or LS4 engine, the M21 4-Speed and J50 Power brakes. The same package was offered in 1974 and 1975. Z07 returned as an RPO in 1991-95 as an Adjustable Suspension Package for coupes.
I'll say this for Automobile Magazine. At least they got the color right.
