I received the monthly email from Proteam Corvettes and had to read the first paragraph three times to make sure it was saying what I thought it was. I still didn't quite believe it so I fired off an email to Terry Michaelis and he confirmed what I read: Terry and his brother Fred are putting the world-renowned dealership and its collection of 200 classic Corvettes up for sale.
I continue to hope that 2009 will go down in history as the year that production started on the Corvette ZR1 instead of the year that the last Corvette was made. There are buyers out there and even in a bad economy Corvettes will continue to be sold. With that said, we do have some preliminary production numbers of Corvettes for the first five months or so of the 2009 model year.
Orange County Chopper's Paul Teutul Sr is parting with another one of his Corvettes and this time he turns to ebay to sell his personal 2006 Corvette Z06. Paul Sr bought this Corvette new and has since put only 8,700 miles on her. Every option was ordered and he added some personal touches with the custom interior and the black wheels. The car has been featured on several episodes of American Chopper and the buyer will receive DVD copies signed by Teutul.
Back in April we learned that J.J Abram's reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise would feature a 1965 Corvette convertible. The new movie trailer for Star Trek XI was released today and it opens with a young James Tiberius Kirk being pursued by the police and bailing out of the Sting Ray just before it careens off a cliff.
This is a quick note of thanks to Jeff and his staff at Seatbelt Solutions. I called Jeff a week ago to get a quote on rewebbing the seatbelts for our 1979 Corvette project car. He gave me a good ballpark price so I boxed them up and sent them to his shop in Jupiter, Florida. After he received the belts, he called and we discuss our options and what I was looking for. After agreeing on a price, Jeff went to work and one week later they were returned to us and I couldn't be happier with the work.
This is an open post to General Motors, and I'm going to be blunt about what I have to say.
Tom Wallace, Performance Vehicle Line Executive and head of the Corvette team retires suddenly after a 38 year career at GM and you can't issue one official press release thanking him for his service?
Gene Stefanyshyn is unofficially confirmed by sources to become the new head of the Corvette program and you can't put out a statement welcoming him to the fold?
You have a whole communications department and can't issue one statement concerning huge changes in your "Halo" car's leadership? That's pretty pathetic...
One of the curses, or blessings depending on your outlook is the fact that the Corvette is a 2-seat sports car. Room enough for you and a buddy or your significant other, but no more. Gene Swatek thought the Corvette should be a car that could be enjoyed by the whole family, so he custom built what I am sure is the world's only 1987 four-door Corvette.
Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers held their muscle car and Corvettes auction in St. Charles, Illinois last month and in spite of the fact the auction was held during turbulent economic times, the results may surprise you. Over half the Corvettes entered were sold and sales topped $1.53 Million. The top selling Corvette of the auction is also the hottest, newest collectible Corvette on the market - the 2009 Corvette ZR1.
General Motors has announced the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky will undergo another shutdown in January and will layoff 110 workers as the company slashes production of the iconic sports car amid lower sales. Production is expected to be cut as well from 15 Corvettes an hour to 11.
The Top Gear episode that featured the 2009 ZR1 aired on Sunday and from the start you could see that Clarkson was absolutely bowled over by the power and refinement of the 638 horsepower Corvette. With no America bashing or usual snarkiness shown other than to the US Government for issues relating to the host's visas, the show was fun to watch and very entertaining.
Corvette Vaporware seems to be all the rage these days and those designs that incorporate the features of classic Corvettes always generate a ton of press. Now traveling on the intertubes at warp speed are the computer renderings by Christian Cyrulewski and his C6-based retro Corvette C3R.
I just came across this classic clip from a WWE Raw event that aired in October, 1998. I never followed wrestling but it appears that wrestler Steve Austin and WWE founder Vince McMahon have a love-hate relationship. That relationship must have been even more strained after this event which culminated in Austin filling McMahon's early C4 Corvette Coupe with cement.
A set of aerial photographs showing the progress of the National Corvette Museum's new addition are circulating among the enthusiast community. The expansion will add 47,000 square feet to the existing 60,000 square foot facility and the new space will include the library/archives, an expanded gift shop and a conference center capable of seating 400 people.
With news of the indefinite hold placed on the next generation C7 Corvette due to GM's financial problems, we sometimes wonder if Corvette 7.0 will ever be made. We do find ways to dream about what could be and luckily for us, this C7 computer rendering by the folks at Motor Authority/Schulte Design goes a long way to filling the void.
This Corvette Z06 turned C6R replica looks to be the real deal until you get up close and view the interior. Making its debut at last year's SEMA show, this ultimate tribute Corvette has returned to Las Vegas for SEMA 2008 and features the updated 2008 "Jake Scrape" livery which includes the new Compuware logo and black wheels. While we believe the best livery ever was the B-Pillar Jake on the 2007 Monterey Corvette C6Rs, we know this Corvette would be a hit at any of the ALMS Corvette corrals.
We knew sales would be down for the month of October, but I wasn't expecting the news to be this bad. Corvette sales declined an astounding 52.9% in the month of October with only 1,170 units delivered. Now we know why the Corvette assembly plant will be idled for the second time come December.
Finally, someone had the balls an epiphany to line up four supercars and take them head to head down the strip. Motor Trend pitted the Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R, Ferarri 599 GTB and the Porsche GT2 in this race for bragging rights. America's best against Germany, Japan and Italy. It's one thing to compare performance specs on paper and quite another to actually see 4 cars with a combined 2,260 horsepower thunder down the strip.
There are a lot of ways a Corvette can be modified to suit the tastes of the owner, but sometimes just one look can make you shudder, wondering WTF was the owner thinking. In celebration of today being Halloween, we bring you these Corvettes for sale we found on ebay that we think have crossed that line from tasteful to being just downright scary.
Proteam Corvette will be hosting classic Corvette expert and NCRS Master Judge Al Grenning and the Heart of Ohio NCRS Chapter on Saturday, November 7th for a day of seminars covering midyear Corvette authentication topics. In addition to Grenning, other well-known figures in the hobby will be attending as well as several rare M-22 Corvettes.
Late last week we brought you the results of Motor Trend's Corvette ZR1 instrumented test results. In their testing, MT claimed they hit a wind corrected 200.4 mph on the five mile high speed loop at Chrysler's Arizona Proving Grounds. Video surfaced today showing a three camera view of test driver Didier Theys hitting that mark. Although he backs it down when the speedometer hits over 200 mph, it looks as though the ZR1 still had some legs for more.
Listen up resto-mod and performance car builders! Beginning next fall you'll be able to buy the 638 horsepower supercharged LS9, the new engine built by GM to power the 2009 Corvette ZR1. The engine comes fully dressed and needs only an external oil and coolant tanks, an ECU and wiring harness. The engine features roughly the same dimensions as the 6.2L LS3 so its installation possibilities are plenty.
Back in June when GM Development Engineer Jim Mero drove the 2009 Corvette ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4, we wondered out loud what that time could have been if one of Corvette Racing's drivers, particularly Jan Magnussen, had the opportunity to drive the 6.2L Supercharged Corvette around the world's all-important 12.9 mile track. According to several sources, we've learned that on Monday, October 27th, Jan Magnussen drove the Corvette ZR1 to a time of 7:22.4, besting the previous time by 4 seconds!
With the news of Tom Wallace's retirement at the end of this month finally sinking in, attention is now shifting to who GM will name as a replacement. Several automotive sites, AutoWeek and InsideLine are confirming that Gene Stefanyshyn, GM's global vehicle line executive for rear-wheel-drive vehicles, will add the Corvette chief engineer responsibility to his duties.
General Motors is planning to shut down the Bowling Green Assembly Plant for another week in early December in another attempt to keep inventories in line with demand. AP is reporting the plant will be idled the week of December 1st and will reopen the following week.
The much anticipated move from GT1 to GT2 next year brings a whole host of new challenges and obstacles for the Corvette Racing team. Having thoroughly dominated the GT1 class and pretty much driving out the competition over the last two years, GT2 will pit Corvette's C6.R against some of the premier manufacturers and teams in sports car racing. Corvette Racing Program Director Doug Fehan recently shed some light on GT2 C6.R project during an ALMS conference call.
