Chevrolet dealers delivered 1,396 Corvettes last month according to the latest sales report from General Motors. The number is slightly off last month's 1,643 and ends five months of consecutive growth. GM finished second quarter with 4,446 Corvettes deliveries compared to 3,052 in the first quarter. For the calendar year, sales are off 49.9% compared to last year.
Just a week after JD Power announced the Chevrolet Corvette as the best Sports car, Strategic Vision's 2009 Total Quality Awards bestows the same title on the 2009 Corvette Coupe. Not only did Corvette perform better than any other car in its "Premium Coupe" class, its score of 938 was higher than any other class winner in the survey.
Fifty-six years ago today, the very first production Corvettes were completed and rolled off a temporary assembly line at Chevrolet's Customer Delivery Center in Flint, Michigan. All the Corvettes were hand-built and for the first time in a mass produced vehicle, a revolutionary material called fiberglass was used instead of steel to make the body panels.
It's always fun when you see a guy riding a classic Corvette hard. In this video from last weekend's Bloomington Gold parade, the owner of this Riverside Red '67 Coupe decides to show how a real burnout is done.
Mecum concluded their two day Bloomington Gold auction on Saturday afternoon. It will be a memorable auction not for what sold, but for what didn't sell. Only 108 of the 286 Corvettes sold which translates to a 38% success rating. However, many of the featured Corvettes didn't reach reserve which makes us wonder if buyers were holding back or if sellers were asking too much.
Today is the 43rd anniversary of my father's purchase of a Tuxedo Black 1966 Corvette from Rohrer Chevrolet in Camden, New Jersey. If you are a new reader of CorvetteBlogger, my original post on this topic from June 2007 will tell you a lot about me and my love of Corvettes. It also gives me a chance to pay tribute to my day who I lost in 1982.

The personal car belonging to legendary General Motor's automotive designer Harley Earl was a no sale at Mecum's 2009 Bloomington Gold auction. The Corvette convertible was the main attraction on Saturday where it was introduced with great fanfare. Bidding started at $400,000 for the custom Sting Ray and quickly climbed to the high bid of $985,000 before stalling. The auctioneer proclaimed a no sale (Mecum's the bid goes on) as the seller set the reserve at $1.3 million.
Sales were very few and far between on the second day of Mecum's High Performance Auction at Bloomington Gold. We'll discuss this later when we tabulate the sales results. So when this 1968 L88 Corvette Coupe crossed the auction block, we weren’t getting our hopes up that the big block would sell. But the checkbooks came out for an original Bloomington Gold Survivor L88 and the $300,000 selling price was the highest price paid for a Corvette all weekend.
One of more interesting time periods for Corvette came midway through the C4 production run when you could order a twin-turbo for your Corvette. In 1991, the B2K twin-turbo RPO was the only non-GM performance option that could be ordered on a Corvette. This limited edition 1991 Series 1 Corvette Callaway Speedster is #8 of 10 made and used to be part of the Otis Chandler collection before being acquired by Chevrolet dealer and Corvette collector Bob McDorman.
This Ermine White 1966 Corvette Convertible was one of the high points on the first day of Mecum's Corvette auction at the annual Bloomington Gold show in St. Charles, Illinois. The L72 427/425 hp V8 powered Corvette crossed the block early Friday and was sold for $83,500. Video of the sale is after the jump.

In a scene somewhat reminiscent of Boris Said's fire in the LG Motorsports #28 GT2 Corvette at Long Beach, this SCCA racer was recently tearing up the track at Road America when his C6 T-1 race car caught on fire.
I hope all of you are aware that Friday is the 9th annual "Drive Your Corvette to Work" day. On this day, Corvette enthusiasts are urged to take to their Corvette to the road as a way to say happy birthday to the Corvette, which first rolled off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan on June 30th, 1953.
Motor Trend answers the age old question: Why race a 638-horsepower Corvette ZR1 against a Boeing F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet? Well, after defeating a Ferrari 599 GTB, the Porsche 911 GT2 and the Nissan GT-R in various head-to-head Motor Trend tests, the Blue Angel is about the only competition up to the challenge. This is the third such time MT has put a Vette against a Jet the video is fun to watch. I won't give away the results, so sit back and enjoy this 19-minute video of Blue Devil vs Blue Angel.

Once the toast of the town, the Corvette Z06 has recently been overshadowed in the news by its two stable mates, the supercharged 638-hp Corvette ZR1 and the new 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. But that doesn't mean the Corvette Z06 performance and looks have been diminished in any capacity. Far from it. The 505-hp Corvette Z06 remains one of the best performance values on the market and to make sure the Corvette stays within reach of its target market, GM is only upping the price of the 2010 Z06 by $360 over the 2009 model.
Corvette Hall of Famer Myron Scott is best known as the man who named the Corvette. According to the National Corvette Museum, Myron was reading the dictionary under "C" looking for a name to call a new Chevrolet sports car when he came across Corvette, a speedy pursuit ship in the British Navy.

If you are a frequent reader of AutoExtremist.com's Peter De Lorenzo, you know that he has been a big supporter of GM's Corvette Racing program because of its return on investment that racing brings via the technology transfer to production Corvettes. De Lorenzo has talked about the two distinct camps within GM corporate Marketing when it comes to Racing and is especially critical of the support the automaker gives to NASCAR year after year.
In his latest "Fumes" column, Peter reviews the awards and accolades that Corvette Racing has generated over the last decade and discusses the future of the program. As usual, this is a must-read for any racing enthusiast.

The cost to own America's own 638-horsepower supercar just got more expensive. GM recently released prices of all Corvette models to dealers and the 2010 Corvette will now start at $107,830. Add the required $1,700 gas guzzler tax for the Corvette ZR1 and the new out the door price increases to $109,530, an increase of $2,910 over the 2009's MSRP + gas tax of $106,620.

Those who look at the Corvette and see a gas guzzling V8 sports car are usually unaware that the sport car's EPA highway mileage rating is 26. Corvette owners who regularly drive their cars know this number to be on the low side. So Popular Mechanics recently got behind the wheel of a new C6 to test what they call Corvettes "most amazing talent...its astonishing fuel economy".

Corvette Racing came to La Sarthe with a single-minded goal to win the GT1 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and that's exactly what they accomplished. Piloting the #63 Velocity Yellow Corvette C6.R across the finish line was Johnny O'Connell, who became the only American to win Le Mans 4 times. The #64 Corvette seized the GT1 lead with 3 hours left to run, but transmission problems knocked the Black Corvette out of the race.
