If the Corvette market in the current economy can be defined by the sales results of Bloomington Gold, the Country's largest all Corvette auction, it would show that condition 1 classic Corvettes with documentation and/or racing provenance continue to sell well. The results (or lack of) also show that those Corvettes in less than perfect condition or those that have received amateur restorations are now giving up some of the gains they've made over the last few years.
Last weekend's Bloomington Gold Corvette show featured a reunion of the "Earthquake 88's", Corvettes from 1967-69 that were optioned with the rare 427 ci L88 V8 engine. Only 216 examples of the 560 hp L88's were built during the three year run and only at Bloomington Gold would you be lucky to see as many as 50 gathered in one weekend.
GM announced yesterday the production of a limited edition Corvette specifically for the Japanese market. The Corvette S-Limited is essentially an exclusive trim package on a standard C6 Corvette and will have a limited production run of just 30 units and will be evenly split with 15 Black and 15 in Artic White.
What a difference a month makes. Last month I was happily reporting that despite the economy, GM delivered nearly 3,000 new Corvettes in May. Yesterday's release of June's sales report is a very different story for Corvette as sales were down sharply with only 2,082 Corvettes delivered. That's a drop of -28.4% month to month and the decline is even greater (-31.8%) when comparing June 2008 to June 2007.
June has traditionally been a good month for Corvette sales and now all those extra Corvettes are showing up on Chevrolet dealer lots. Last month's Corvette Stock Report showed 7,697 2008 models on the ground and as of yesterday there are now 8,760 Corvettes available at dealer's nationwide.
Corvette's Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter has finally made public the much anticipated Nürburgring lap time by the 2009 Corvette ZR1. On the morning of Friday, June 27th, GM Development Engineer Jim Mero drove the 2009 Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. The entire post from Tadge is after the jump.
Mecum's Bloomington Gold Corvette Auction is being broadcasted live on the web this weekend. The auction starts at 3pm CST on Friday and 2pm CST Saturday and are expected to run well into the evening. The live feed is being carried here at CorvetteBlogger.com and can be viewed after the jump.
Over 500 Corvettes are expected to be offered at this year's Bloomington Gold Auction which gets underway this afternoon. While many collectors consign a number of Corvettes to the country's largest Corvette-only auction, this year's event has a special collection of 42 Corvettes that have been hand-picked from the personal collection of Fred and Terry Michaelis of Proteam Corvette fame.
Many of these Corvettes are already Bloomtington Gold certified and represent the best of the best. These low mile, high horsepower and unique-optioned Corvettes will be offered over the two day event. After the jump are some of our favorites.
Just a reminder if you haven't made plans yet. Friday, June 27th is the 8th Annual "Drive Your Corvette to Work Day" sponsored by Mid America Motorworks. Every year on the Friday closest to June 30th, the day production started on the 1953 Corvette in Flint Michigan, Corvette enthusiasts celebrate the official birthday of America's Sports Car by driving their Corvette to work.
I was trolling GM's media site and came across these new photos of the 2009 Corvette Z06. The photos show the Corvette Z06 in the instantly recognizable 57U Cyber Gray Metallic exterior, one of two new colors for 2009. I say instantly recognizable as this was one of the colors that the Corvette ZR1 was photographed in for January's ZR1 Media Press Kits. The introduction of the Corvette ZR1 has effectively sucked the air out of the room when it comes to discussion of the Corvette Z06, but the car is still a technological marvel with its 7.0 liter 505-hp LS7 v8 power plant.
GMnext is doing a fantastic job at cranking out behind the scenes videos like the Corvette ZR1 Build we presented earlier this week. With this next video they've taken a video crew where few have gone before - inside the paint lab at the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
RM Auctions announced that its Sports & Classics of Monterey Auction will feature a new 2009 Corvette ZR1 to benefit the Texas non-profit relief agency GRACE. The Monterey auction will take place August 15-16 at the Portola Hotel and Spa and coincides with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. RM's Monterey auction is one of the largest classic and exotic car auctions in the country. Last year's Sports and Classics auction saw 190 cars sell for $46 million including 10 Corvettes that combined for just over $1 million in sales.
GM has released a batch of official photos of the 2009 Corvette in conjunction with the 2009 Corvette Pricing Schedule and we're pleased to see its the new Blade Silver Metallic, RPO code 17U. Blade silver replaces the popular Machine Silver which graced Corvettes from 2004-2008. The differences between Blade Silver and Machine Silver are subtle, but distinct. In addition to the gallery showcasing the new color, I have put together a side by side comparison of the two silvers.
GM released the official 2009 Corvette Pricing schedules earlier this week and while most of the buzz centered around the $103,300 price tag for the Corvette ZR1, let's not forget about the Coupe, Convertible and the Z06 models which will represent around 95% of the Corvettes sold next year.
There are now four distinct Corvette models with prices ranging from $47,895 for the base Coupe to $103,300 for the Corvette ZR1. The new 2009 schedule does show an increase in pricing over the 2008 model, but GM does give us some surprises with several enhancements to the 2009 models including a lower priced base convertible.
I received a text message yesterday from GMnext.com alerting me that a new video showcasing the assembly of a Corvette ZR1 was online. The video starts with the ZR1's frame and follows the assembly process until the Corvette is completed and driven out to the back lot ready to be transported. One aspect of the video that I really enjoyed was hearing the comments made from the assembly plant workers who speak about the Corvette ZR1 with pride and enthusiasm.
Seems like it was forever-ago when the 2009 Corvette ZR1 was introduced at January’s GM Style event. With all the fanfare and Kid Rock to boot, the Corvette ZR1 single-handedly took over the North American Internation Auto Show. Six months later and just one month before the 6.2L Supercharged carbon fiber wonder begins production, GM is giving us the final piece of the Corvette ZR1's puzzle: pricing and official performance statistics.
For the second consecutive year, Corvette Racing has finished second in the LMGT1 class. Johnny O'Connell, Jan Magnussen and Ron Fellows ran 344 laps in their Velocity Yellow Corvette C6.R and was on the lead lap but finished 4:23.843 behind last year's winning #009 Aston Martin DBR9. The #64 Corvette C6.R piloted by Gavin, Beretta and Papis overcame a multitude of issues and fought their way back to a third place finish completing 341 laps.
The telemetry in the #63 Corvette C6.R was showing the right front brakes running hotter than normal so the decision was made to pit the Corvette, do a visual check and if needed, change out the pads and rotor. Watch the crew go to work and in particular keep your eye on Crew Chief Dan Binks as he whips off his helmet and dives right into the wheel-well to get the job done. Total time for the brake change is just one minute 24 seconds.
Once the rain started falling, cars began making a beeline for the pits to change to their rain tires. Unfortunately for Johnny O'Connell, his #63 Corvette C6.R still had racing slicks on when he came up on the #33 LMP2 Lola Judd practically stopped on the entrance of pit row.
The Aston Martin DBR9 vs Corvette C6.R battle is in full force at the midway point of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The #009 Aston Martin is currently leading the class with Jan Magnussen and the #63 Corvette just 41 seconds behind. The #007 Aston Martin is third and then the #64 Corvette C6.R is a lap down at 4th in class.
Corvette Racing has the LMGT1 Pole for the 76th running of the 24 Hours of LeMans and C6.Rs are looking as strong as ever for the most famous endurance race in the world. CorvetteBlogger.com will be offering fanatical coverage and we're sharing some of our Le Mans viewing tips. SPEEDTV is providing a ton of coverage, but where will you go once the network switches from Le Mans to NASCAR on Saturday afternoon? After the jump you will find the programming schedule for SPEED as well as other links to help you follow Corvette Racing in their quest for their 6th Class win.
For the first time ever at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the factory-backed Corvette Racing team will be starting on the Pole. Both C6.Rs were faster in today's qualifying rounds than yesterdays but it was Jan Magnussen in the #63 Corvette C6.R that won the GT1 class Pole with a fastest lap time of 3:47.668. After running 1st and 2nd most of the day, the Saleen S7R was able to break the 3:50 mark with a lap of 3:47.761. Oliver Gavin and the #64 Corvette will start 3rd on the grid with a time of 3:48.539.
The twin Velocity Yellow C6.R Corvettes belonging to the Corvette Racing team should be very pleased with their performance today in the opening qualifying sessions of the 76th running of the 24 Hours of LeMans. Both Corvettes traded the lead in the GT1 class with each other during the two periods and at the end of the first day it was Jan Magnussen in the #63 Corvette leading the GT1 class with a lap of 3:49.406 while Oliver Gavin is 1.360 seconds behind with a time of 3:50.766.
On Tuesday the Corvette Racing team went through the Scrutineering process which culminates in the taking of team photos. I am assuming that Scrutineering is like a NASCAR technical inspection but I do know the process allows fans to get up close and personal with their favorite LeMans teams. If you have any insight to the process, please leave a comment. Activities at LeMans go into high gear today with the start of two days of official practice rounds and qualifying. As we wait for Team Corvette to take to the track, enjoy the team photos taken earlier this week.
Corvette Racing's group of drivers for the 24 Hours of Le Mans has a record any team in the paddock would envy. The six pilots have combined for 144 class wins in the American Le Mans Series and 17 at Le Mans with Corvette Racing winning five times since 2001. Despite all the success, the memories, history and significance of Le Mans still resonate throughout the team.
