Reeves Callaway and Former Corvette Chief Engineer Dave McLellan

As a genuine fan of Reeves Callaway and Callaway Corvettes, I always take the time to watch, listen or read accounts of his work. Former Corvette Engineering Chief Dave McLellan recently had the opportunity to sit down with Reeves for an audio podcast. The two touched on a variety of subjects including their past collaboration on twin turbo Corvettes, the late Eighties 254 mph Corvette project called the Sledgehammer, today’s Callaway Corvettes and the European FIA GT3 series of which Callaway builds cars for and races in.

As a bonus, we’ll use the opportunity of Reeves telling the back-story on the Sledgehammer to bring you the nearly 10 minute video of the Callaway Engineering team’s 1988 run where the twin turbo super car reached speeds of 254 miles per hour.

[VIDEO] God Bless America: L88 Corvettes on Parade

L88 Corvettes on Parade at Bloomington

Last weekend’s Bloomington Gold Corvette show featured a reunion of the “Earthquake 88′s”, Corvettes from 1967-69 that were optioned with the rare 427 ci L88 V8 engine. Only 216 examples of the 560 hp L88′s were built during the three year run and only at Bloomington Gold would you be lucky to see as many as 50 gathered in one weekend.

The parade of earth-shaking L88 Corvettes is being led by the new King of the Hill, a red 2009 Corvette ZR1 Corvette. Many of these Corvettes were originally destined for the track including the #9 Corvette race car from 1967 driven at the 24 Hour of LeMans in the 5.0+ Litre category by Bob Bondurant and Dick Guldstrand. The 2009 Corvette Z06 in Cyber Gray Metallic

I was trolling GM’s media site and came across these new photos of the 2009 Corvette Z06. The photos show the Corvette Z06 in the instantly recognizable 57U Cyber Gray Metallic exterior, one of two new colors for 2009. I say instantly recognizable as this was one of the colors that the Corvette ZR1 was photographed in for January’s ZR1 Media Press Kits. The introduction of the Corvette ZR1 has effectively sucked the air out of the room when it comes to discussion of the Corvette Z06, but the car is still a technological marvel with its 7.0 liter 505-hp LS7 v8 power plant.

As we mentioned earlier this week in 2009 Corvette Pricing post, there are several upgrades and enhancements for the 2009 Corvette Z06. They include:

  • New, “spider”-design 10-spoke Z06 wheel available in four versions: Sparkle Silver, Competition Gray and chrome
  • Color-keyed door and instrument panels with red and titanium interiors
  • Power-operated pull-down hatch now standard
  • Gray stitching on Ebony base seats (previously red)
  • New door sill plates with the Z06 logo
  • Acoustic package standard on all Z06 models
  • The Z06 also receives a larger-capacity dry-sump oiling system. It upgrades to the 10.5-quart (9.9 liters) system of the new ZR1. The previous oil system held eight quarts (7.5 liters).

So how well will this color sell? Our best comparison takes us back to the C5s Medium Spiral Gray Metallic offered on 2003-04 Corvettes. Spiral Gray was the 5th most popular color in 2003 and 6th most popular in 2004. However it wasn’t offered on the Z06 which may have limited its penetration.

GM has released a batch of official photos of the 2009 Corvette in conjunction with the 2009 Corvette Pricing Schedule and we’re pleased to see its the new Blade Silver Metallic, RPO code 17U. Blade silver replaces the popular Machine Silver which graced Corvettes from 2004-2008. The differences between Blade Silver and Machine Silver are subtle, but distinct. In addition to the gallery showcasing the new color, I have put together a side by side comparison of the two silvers.

Machine Silver has been one of the more popular Corvette colors usually ranking in the top half of Color production behind Black and the two Reds, so the change-over to the oh-so-similar Blade Silver Metallic shouldn’t cause any big changes in the palette for 2009.

[VIDEO] Corvette ZR1: Factory Assembly Process

The 6.2L Supercharged Corvette ZR1

I received a text message yesterday from GMnext.com alerting me that a new video showcasing the assembly of a Corvette ZR1 was online. The video starts with the ZR1′s frame and follows the assembly process until the Corvette is completed and driven out to the back lot ready to be transported. One aspect of the video that I really enjoyed was hearing the comments made from the assembly plant workers who speak about the Corvette ZR1 with pride and enthusiasm.

[VIDEO] VetteGirl.TV Video Series Makes Debut

VetteGirl.TV Video Series

Becky Anderson is a typical mother of three, but after meeting Patrick Gramm of Digital Corvettes and Vette Dogs fame, she trades in the minivan for Patrick’s 2002 Z06 Corvette race car. “Becky has no qualifications whatsoever to be a Corvette race car driver, except for her enthusiasim and desire to go really fast.” This is the set up for the first episode of Vette Girl, a new weekly video series that chronicles Becky’s pursuit of speed. According to some of the comments from Patrick, the show has grand aspirations for 40 episodes this year.

Here’s the first episode which has Becky taking the broken Z06 to the shop and acutally gets a lesson on performing some of the mechanical upgrades herself:

LeMans Blue Corvette Z06 in Italy

SuperCarMovies.com has turned their high-definition camera lenses on the Corvette Z06 and the result can only be summed up simply as “breathtaking”. This isn’t just another YouTube video showing the comings and going of America’s super car turned loose on Italy’s twisty old-world roads, its a full cinematic experience showing America’s super car turned loose on Italy’s twisty old-world roads.

While previous SuperCarMovies.com came complete with a plot line, with this movie, the Z06 is the plot line. From the beginning you get a sense that the video you are about see will exceed your expectations. They even filmed the Corvette Z06 in the rain! I didn’t see that coming…

Leaving the confines of a parking garage, the Corvette Z06 is shown first in the rain outside a gorgeous Italian estate. The action then moves to surrounding roads. The Corvette looks very comfortable sliding around the switchbacks and sloping mountainside curves. The views are wonderful and after watching the video, you’ll have a strong urge to go online looking to book travel to southern Europe.

[VIDEO] Auction Results: 1955 Pennant Blue Corvette

A Pennant Blue 1955 Corvette Roadster

1955 was the turning point for Corvette with two significant changes that kept the 2 seat roadster from becoming extinct. The first was the introduction of the V8 engine – a 265 ci 195 hp small block that ushered the beginning of continual performance upgrades in the Corvette. The second was the introduction of Ford’s Thunderbird. Ford sold just over 16,000 Thunderbirds in its inaugural year compared to the Corvettes 4,600 during its first three years of production. Some say GM execs were too embarrassed to quit in light of Ford’s success. Let’s be glad they persevered and built Corvette into the iconic symbol it is today.

The 1955 Corvette was the second lowest year of Corvette production with just 700 built. The new 265 cubic inch V8 was mated to a powerglide automatic, although the straight six Blue Flame was offered in seven cars. To signify the V8 change, an enlarged gold “V” was added to the Chevrolet script of those Corvettes offered with the new V8.

Five exterior colors were offered with Pennant Blue being the second least produced color with just 45 examples. Polo White remained the most popular of color choices at 325 while the rarest of all colors were the 15 painted in Corvette Copper.

This Pennant Blue 1955 Corvette was auction by Mecum during their Muscle Cars & More event televised on HD Theater. It features the V8 engine with a powerglide transmission. Other options include the Wonderbar radio, side windows, window bag, shielding and coil cover. It is sequence number 30 out of 700 produced and is just 1 of 45 Pennant Blues produced. In 2002 it was awarded the prestigious Bloomington Gold certificate.

[VIDEO] Corvette Racing: Sounds of Long Beach

We’ve got a few weeks before the next ALMS race but lucky for us our friends at Bad Boy Vettes have put together a music video to help us pass the time.

Corvette Racing will be in Utah on May 18th for the Larry H. Miller Dealership’s Utah Grand Prix, held at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. SPEED will be covering the 2 hour forty-five minute race live beginning at 3 pm EST.
