Barrett-Jackson 08: 1958 Corvette Sets High Price

by Keith Cornett on January 19, 2008

We were damn lucky to see this Corvette get sold. It seems this year Speed TV has a knack of going to commercials just as a Corvette is crossing the auction block. So when the video starts you’ll see the bidding has already underway.

Lot Number 990.1 is a 1958 Corvette Convertible, Silver Blue with Silver Blue interior. Featuring a 283 ci 240 dual quad engine coupled to a T10 transmission, the Corvette has just 36,990 original miles. It has a very low production sequence number of #302. The numbers matching Corvette underwent a documented frame off restoration and has just 200 miles on her since completion.

The couple that won the bidding were very excited. The announcer says this is the fourth car he has purchased and his wife is still smiling!

The hype surrounding the sale of this special car has been building since last Saturday when the all new 2009 Corvette ZR1 made its debut at the GM Style Party in Detroit. But I don’t think anybody expected to see what happened on Saturday night with millions of automotive and Corvette fans watching the 37th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction as they saw the first blue devil auctioned off with the proceeds going to the United Way.

Giving a fantastic introduction as only he can was Jay Leno. Jay has a way of connecting with enthusiasts because he is one himself. Jay was joined on the block with GM North America President Troy Clarke while GM Performance Vehicle Line Manager Tom Wallace stood in the background.

The bidding started at $100,000 and quickly climbed to $900,000 with collector Dave Ressler holding the high bid. As the money for the Corvette is going to charity, Dave added an additional $100,000 to make the final bid $1,000,000. Barrett-Jackson waived the buyers commission as this was a charity auction. The Corvette shown on the block is a prototype only. Ressler will get to move to the head of the line and receive the first available retail version Corvette ZR1 later this summer. His Corvette ZR1 will be painted in a one-only LeMans Blue and will feature option code BD1. The Corvette will be delivered to the National Corvette Museum where Ressler will receive the car. In addition to winning the Corvette, Dave will receive a three-day driving experience at the Bondurant School of High Performance where Corvette Racing’s Ron Fellows will serve as a special instructor. Jay Leno has also donated tickets to the Tonight Show as well as a tour of his personal collection.

Dave Ressler is well known in the Corvette hobby for spending $1 million dollars back in 2006 at Barrett-Jackson to buy the oldest surviving Corvette, 1953′s #003. In terms of who won the horsepower wars at tonight’s auction, this should be a slam dunk for Corvette. The 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR sold for $550,000 while the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8′s selling price has yet to be know. We’ll update this post once the results are in.

Barrett-Jackson 08: [VIDEO] A Tale of Two 1963 Corvettes

by Keith Cornett on January 18, 2008

Two 1963 Corvettes crossed the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction on Thursday evening, and while they were both made in 1963 they were anything but alike.

Lot #709 is a Tuxedo Black convertible with a ’67 stinger hood and 20″ Foose rims. It has the 327 ci 340 hp L76 engine and is coupled to a 4-speed transmission. It’s bling was showing for a reason as it was recently used in the making of a music video by the rapper T.I.

The second 1963 Corvette in this highlight, Lot # 743 is a split window coupe, all original with a matching numbers base 327 ci 250 hp engine and a 4-Speed. It had some nice convenience options including power steering, power brakes and power windows. Finished in Riverside Red, the coupe is just stunning.

The reason I combined these two auctions into one video is not so much to compare the two as it is to contrast them: With different body styles, engine options and restoration goals, these two Corvettes are completely different cars.

So let me ask you a question. If you could have your choice between a very solid semi-celebrity (video ho!) Corvette roadster with nearly 100 horsepower more than a matching numbers base engine Split Window Coupe, which one would you choose? Leave a comment below and remember there is no wrong answer.

Barrett-Jackson 08: [VIDEO] 1958 Corvette Convertible

by Keith Cornett on January 18, 2008

Here is a really sharp 1958 Corvette that was sold at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The selling price was $75,000 + the 10% buyers commission of 10% for a total price of $82,500.

Lot #728 was the first C1 Corvette to cross the block at the 2008 auction. The Corvette’s exterior is Snowcrest White with Inca Silver coves and comes appointed with a Pebble Black interior. Powered by a 283 ci 270 hp dual quad small block V8, the sales literature lists the mileage at an incredible 30,500 miles.

There is kind of a funny aside to this story. The seller is John Howard, car collector and legendary cycling and triathlon star. Howard set the bicycle land speed record of 152 mph back in 1985 at the Bonneville Salt Flats, traveling at a speed greater than his 1958 Corvette is capable of in its stock form. No word on whether or not the bike was modded.

Yes, Barrett-Jackson is finally here and we’re celebrating by watching wall to wall coverage of the super bowl of classic car auctions. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually considered the bargain nights, but here is a 1966 Corvette convertible that we believe was well sold.

This Corvette (Lot # 464) features a 327 ci 300 hp base engine with several rare options. Just 8.7% of 1966 Corvettes were equipped with the two-speed powerglide automatic transmission and only 12.7% came with factory air conditioning. The Corvette was finished with the most popular color in 1966, Nassau Blue (6,100) and features a black interior. The matching numbers Corvette is said to have undergone an extensive frame-off restoration.

I feel for the commentators though as it’s tough enough to talk on live television without occasionally getting something wrong. So for today’s trivia question, take a listen and leave a comment with what you think was incorrectly described during this auction.

Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter talks with FastLaneDaily.com about the 2009 Corvette ZR1 on location at the Detroit Auto Show. Tadge tells us the inspiration of the Corvette’s ceramic composite brakes was the Ferrari Enzo as well as the decision to hotlap the car during last year’s final ALMS race at Laguna Seca.

by Keith Cornett on January 14, 2008

This past weekend, we visited the NCRS Winter Regional in Kissimmee (Orlando) Florida. It was a great show and the perfect way to spend a Saturday. I love watching the Corvettes being judged as well as trolling the swap meet area. I met the former chief engineer for Corvette Dave McLellan and also listened in as Tom Hill from Chevy’s Corvette Team spoke about the new 2009 Corvette ZR1.

We’ve got a lot of information coming out of the General in advance of the Corvette ZR1′s public unveiling during the Detroit auto show.
