Bloomington 2009:  1968 L88 Corvette Sets Auction High Selling Price at $300K

Sales were very few and far between on the second day of Mecum’s High Performance Auction at Bloomington Gold. We’ll discuss this later when we tabulate the sales results. So when this 1968 L88 Corvette Coupe crossed the auction block, we weren’t getting our hopes up that the big block would sell. But the checkbooks came out for an original Bloomington Gold Survivor L88 and the $300,000 selling price was the highest price paid for a Corvette all weekend.

Here is the description of the L88 from Mecum’s catalog:

The dominant force of its time in SCCA and FIA competition, the L88 Corvette is still one of the wildest of any generation. With over 560 horsepower on tap at 5600rpm, the L88’s thumping powerplant far exceeded its factory-rated 430. Add its requisite F41 suspension, heavy duty disc brakes and indestructible Positraction rear end and the L88 was without peer.

Formerly a prominent piece of the Steve Hendrickson collection, this fabulous 1968 coupe embodies all the qualities dedicated collectors are searching for in their quest for the Holy Grail of Corvettes. In 1991 it collected an amazing NCRS judging score of 95.5 out of 100, and today it counts Bloomington Gold Silver and Survivor Certification awards in its well-documented history.

The car’s all-conquering L88 427 engine is complemented with the best from the 1968 equipment list, incorporating transistorized ignition, an M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed, J50/J56 heavy-duty power disc brakes, N36 telescopic steering and N11 off-road exhaust. It all comes together wrapped in sparkling International Blue with a Dark Blue interior, both in extraordinary condition, and completed with Rally wheels with correct Red Stripe tires.

Climb into the Dark Blue cockpit, depress the clutch pedal and turn the key, and the L88 barks instantly to life, idling crisply and rewarding the driver with instantaneous throttle response. When everything is up to the right operating temperature, the car answers every command with immediacy only possible in a big block Corvette built specifically for competition.

Documentation includes the Bloomington Gold Survivor Certificate, NCRS judging sheet, chain of ownership, window sticker and Protect-O-Plate.

The L88 legend is still very much alive, and it absolutely thrives in this shining example of the King of Corvettes.

Bloomington 2009:  1966 Corvette Convertible Sells for $83,500

This Ermine White 1966 Corvette Convertible was one of the high points on the first day of Mecum’s Corvette auction at the annual Bloomington Gold show in St. Charles, Illinois. The L72 427/425 hp V8 powered Corvette crossed the block early Friday and was sold for $83,500. Video of the sale is after the jump.

In 1966 the very first 427 engines found their way into Corvettes. Legend has it that the horsepower rating was over 450 but GM artificially deflated the numbers to please the insurance industry. The new power plant boosted the sting Ray’s street-cred immediately: 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds and a 14-sec quarter mile.

This Ermine White Corvette is a numbers matching original example featuring the L72 427/425 hp engine. The V8 is mated to a 4-speed transmission with aggressive 4.11 gears while the exhaust exits through its distinct shrouded side pipes. Original Kelsey Hayes knock-off wheels, two tops and a teak wood steering wheel complete the classic package.

Both buyer and sellers should be pleased with this sale. The $83,500 paid puts this car in the top 20 of 1966 Corvette 427/425 prices according to Corvette Market’s Database and our Corvette Price Guide has the 1966 Corvette appreciating at 7% per year. Not too shabby in this economy!

Motor Trend answers the age old question: Why race a 638-horsepower Corvette ZR1 against a Boeing F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet? Well, after defeating a Ferrari 599 GTB, the Porsche 911 GT2 and the Nissan GT-R in various head-to-head Motor Trend tests, the Blue Angel is about the only competition up to the challenge. This is the third such time MT has put a Vette against a Jet the video is fun to watch. I won’t give away the results, so sit back and enjoy this 19-minute video of Blue Devil vs Blue Angel.

2010 Corvette Grand Sport Launch Control Tested in Dealer's Lot

We showed you how the 2010 Corvette’s Launch Control works from the GM video shown at the National Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash back in April. On Thursday, one of GM’s preproduction 2010 Corvette Grand Sports was at Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn, Michigan and demonstrated the new feature – in their parking lot!

The new Launch Control system is very easy to engage. Just put your manual Corvette’s traction control into competitive mode and push the throttle to the floor. The system will hold a predetermined RPM and when the driver dumps the clutch, the launch control system modulates engine torque 100 times per second to get the best traction.

Les Stanford was quick to point out that this was a GM car and not a customers car or a car that would be for sale. The best news is that had this been an actual customer’s Corvette, using the launch control system will not void the warranty.

Barn Find: 1960 Corvette Roadster

These pictures of a 1960 Corvette were posted online at the Corvette Forum by a member looking for some pricing help on what to offer the owner. According to the poster, the motor is gone, but 95% of the other parts that are off the car are in one of several boxes. At one time, a new front clip was installed. The Corvette has a 4-speed transmission and 31,200 miles are on the odometer. The owner has had it since 1970 and its been stored in this barn for the last ten years.

Following the thread, we learned the seller said he was looking for $10,000 but wasn’t firm. The Forum member ended up buying the Corvette for $7,500. Our Corvette Price Guide puts the value of an average 1960 Corvette roadster at $50,400 and the 1 year appreciation is 7%. So let’s throw this question out to you. What do you think? Was this a good price for a 1960 Corvette in its present condition or should the buyer have run away from this potential basket case?

Corvette Racing's Doug Fehan Talks about the ZR1-Based GT2 Corvette C6.R

During his presentation at the National Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash last month, Corvette Racing’s Program Manager Doug Fehan spoke about the move to the GT2 class and answered questions about the new Corvette ZR1-based GT2 C6.R. Doug is joined on stage with retired VLE and Corvette Chief Engineer Tom Wallace.

The most interesting news to come from the GT2 Q&A is that the new engine will come direct from GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI – the same facility that builds the engines for the Z06 and the ZR1 Corvette. Previously, the engines were supplied by Katech. The move to supply engines in-house means that there will be a greater opportunity for technology transfer from the racing program to the production Corvette.

Hennessey Corvette ZR750 Gets Flogged in Super Slo-Mo

Witness the Hennessey Corvette ZR750 getting a serious workout on a track somewhere in Texas. We get a couple of high speed drivebys on the track before switching to an awesome slo-mo shot as the ZR750 rounds a corner at high speed. You can actually see the waves in the air caused by the exhaust in the background. Our only complaint is that it was too damn short.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson Discusses Corvette's Future

Autoweek.com sat down with new GM CEO Fritz Henderson and the Corvette’s future came up in the discussion. Fritz made it clear that the focus for Corvette is on the current C6 platform and making changes and upgrades to insure “it maintains its leadership position”.

When asked about the hold placed on the C7 development, Henderson commented that it would take a significant investment to have the car make another leap forward, but since the current architecture is so good, the plan for now is to make sure the current Corvette continues to improve every year.

I don’t know about you, but Henderson’s comments left me feeling very uninspired. Not just on the future development of the C7, but his discussion of the current C6 was very bland, almost clinical. Anyone else have that opinion?
