We took our borrowed 2010 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport convertible through three different counties in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday and the drive left a huge impression on me. The folks on the Corvette Team will tell you that once you drive a new Corvette, you’ll be hooked and man am I hooked! This Grand Sport Convertible is a blast to drive, but believe me, we’re just getting started. Our “First Drive” review is after the jump.
Corvette Racing’s Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen join other ALMS drivers in discussing the famous Corkscrew at Monterey’s Laguna Seca raceway. This should get you all fired up for this weekend’s 6-hour race.
Can you name another car manufacturer that has the same up close and personal relationship with its owners as GM enjoys with Corvette? Events like the ALMS Corvette Corrals and the C5/C6 Bash allow Corvette owners and enthusiasts to meet and talk with the core of the Corvette team: Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter, Corvette Product Marketing Manager Harlan Charles and Exterior Design Executive Kirk Bennion. At the recently held C5/C6 Bash, Tadge’s bosses were also in attendance and we got a chance to hear from them at the Saturday morning GM seminar. As they will play a key role in supporting the Corvette team in the development of the C7, we thought it important enough for you to get to know them as well.
Edmunds took a Viper SRT-10 and a 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon prototype out to a track to determine which car could lay the longest burnout. Finally, a comparision test I can get excited about! Both cars got three attempts and their tire marks were measured. Josh Jacquot was the driver for this non-scientific test and although he was bullish on the Viper from the get-go, it was the Velocity Yellow Z06 Corvette that left the biggest (and longest) impression.

Corvette Racing’s Oliver Gavin posted this in-car video of the #4 Corvette C6.R practicing at Elkhart Lake. In a separate video, Oliver explains that the team was at Elkhart Lake for testing all sorts of components – “tires, engines, aero stuff, brakes and all sorts of bits and pieces“. Oliver explained that the although the testing went well, they did run into some problems. You wouldn’t know that judging by the sound of the new LS5.5R V8 getting put through its paces.
A rare and valuable 1954 Corvette roadster was stolen from a Wilwaukie, Oregon man’s garage. Emory Molchan said he discovered the Corvette missing from its garage on Tuesday. Molchan owns three 1954 Corvettes but the stolen car was the most valuable. Following a four-year restoration, Molchan says the Corvette only has just 500 miles on the odometer.
At the C5/C6 Bash at the Corvette Museum, Corvette’s Chief Engineer delivered some remarks about the next generation C7 Corvette which he said is now getting underway in earnest. Tadge prefaced his comments with a warning about how the auto magazines will claim to have inside information or renderings when in fact they are basically making it up, and for us owners to not buy into all the hype. To demonstrate, he held up a copy of the June 2010 Automobile Magazine which, as Tadge says, included a photoshopped picture of him with an article that supposedly has Juechter endorsing a V6.
The big news coming out of the Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash is the enhancements made to the 2011 Z06. The last couple of years have seen the Z06 bracketed by two new models, the high performance ZR1 and the better than stock Corvette Grand Sport. Other than a few updates, the Z06 remained relatively unchanged since its introduction in 2006. In refreshing the Z06, Corvette engineers listened to the owners have provided several enhancements designed to keep the Z06 on the cutting edge of performance while maintaining its edge as the most trackable Corvette in the model lineup.
