1962 Gulf Oil Corvette

One of the most dominating Corvettes in auto racing history was sold over the weekend at Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach Auction for an astounding $1.485 million. Grady Davis’ Gulf Oil Racing Team purchased the Corvette in 1962 from Yenko Chevrolet and the car was campaigned by none other than “The Flying Dentist”, Dr. Dick Thompson in the 1962 SCCA-A Production Class. In 14 races, the Gulf Oil ’62 Corvette finished first in class 12 times including wins at Daytona and Sebring and captured the 1962 A-Production Championship.

The Corvette was sold at the end of the 1962 season to Tony Denman who successfully raced the car throughout 1963, finishing second in class at Daytona while battling against newer Corvettes, Ferrari GTOs and Porsches. At the end of the 1963 season, Denman removed most of the high performance racing parts in order to sell the car as a typical street Corvette.

Almost 20 years later, the Corvette was discovered by the Rev. Mike Ernst who found the Corvette, now painted red, being driven by a college student who was using the Corvette as a daily driver. In researching the Corvette, Ernst found the car came with the rare and highly sought after RPO 687 package which includes the heavy duty brakes, suspension and steering. The Corvette also had a 37-gallon fuel tank which was common for RPO 687 Corvettes that were raced at the time.

Ernst began restoration of the 1962 Corvette in the early 1980′s. The disassembly and paint-stripping process revealed the car to be none other than Dick Thompson’s 1962 Gulf Oil Corvette. Ernst was able to track down Tony Denman who had stored most of the high performance racing parts from the Corvette in his parent’s garage before selling them in 1979. With Denman’s assistance, Ernst tracked down the buyer of the parts and bought them back, reuniting them with the Corvette in May of 1985.

Among the list of parts were Stewart Warner gauges, roll bar, some of the Yenko extra-heavy-duty suspension pieces, aluminum bell housing, separate scatter shield, engine block, cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds, Posi-Traction units, ring and pinions and various hardware. After these racing parts were reassembled, the Corvette was painted its original Ermine White and Blue livery and became the first recipient of the NCRS American Heritage Award.

The 1962 Gulf Oil Corvette returned to the track and raced at Laguna Seca and Palm Springs. It was shown at the Carlisle of Corvettes Racer and Race Car reunion and in 2002 underwent a complete restoration by Doug Prince and Jerry Roman.

In 2005, the Corvette was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame and was displayed at the Petersen Automotive Museum and was shown at Corvette’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Last year the Corvette underwent another restoration by Kevin Mackay of Corvette Repair in New York.

The 1962 Gulf Oil Corvette features a number of astonishing details including an original Motorola two-way radio, allowing car on-course-to-pit communication. It’s believed to be the first use of such equipment in a race car. Other details include correct Koni shock absorbers, finned heavy-duty brakes, painted steel wheels wearing period-correct Goodyear tires, enormous fiberglass scoops for brake cooling. The driveline reveals its content to consist of original date-stamped parts, including the original matching-numbers engine.

The Corvette is highly documented with a collection of publications that featured articles about the race car and an extensive collection of photos from its racing days. In addition to its NCRS and Bloomington Gold certificates, a bill of sale from Yenko Chevrolet to Grady Davis is also included.

Gooding & Company estimated the sale of the Gulf Oil Corvette would bring between $950,000 – $1,250,000. When the gavel dropped on Saturday, August 17th, the final price was $1,485,000, well above the presale estimates. With its winning pedigree in FIA sanction events which included the 1962 Daytona and Sebring races, the 1962 Gulf Oil Corvette is eligible for any international FIA historical events including the LeMans Classic 24 and Goodwood Revival races.

[VIDEO] Corvette Racing: Gavin Crashes at Road America

The #4 Corvette C6.R Crashes at Road America

It’s been a tough road this year for Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta, driver’s of Corvette Racing’s #4 C6.R. Having won just one race in seven tries, the team has been pushing hard but sometimes luck just isn’t on your side. This weekend at the Generac 500 at Road America, the #4 team was running first in the GT1 class when Gavin went off-road in the high-speed Kink, crashing through a billboard and coming to a stop in a sand trap. “Jan was behind me, I was pushing hard, and I was trying to make up some time,” Gavin reported. “I just turned the car in too quickly and got on the inside curb; the car shot across to the exit curb, and then onto the grass. By the time I was on the grass, there was no way I could hold it.”

“I’m all right, but I’m disappointed with myself for making such a mistake,” he admitted. “It was a pretty big impact – of all the places to go off, the Kink is not the place to do it. The car did stand up extremely well to the accident. It looked like it was going to be close at the finish, but unfortunately nothing seems to be going right for us this year.”

Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen finished first in class in the #3 Corvette C6.R after completing 97 laps. The #008 Bell Motorsports Aston Martin DBR9 finished second just two laps behind and the #4 Corvette was retired after Gavin’s crash and finished third with 80 laps completed.

O’Connell and Magnussen increased their lead in the GT1 driver’s championship to 23 points (151-128) with four races remaining on the ALMS schedule. Chevrolet leads Aston Martin 155-44 in the manufacturers’ standings.

“We managed to do three things today,” commented Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. “First, we won the race, which was great for Corvette Racing. Second, we proved once again that safety is always paramount at Corvette Racing. It was an unfortunate accident for Olly, and while the car was damaged, the driver emerged unscathed. That’s a testament to the importance we place on safety.”

And the third?

“We provided a great deal of exposure for Champ Car by displaying their banner prominently on the front of the No. 4 Corvette after its encounter with the wall in the Kink.”

Corvette Racing’s next event is the Grand Prix of Mosport in Bowmanville, Ontario on Sunday, August 24th. SPEED will televise the race live at 3 pm EST.

Corvette Racing: Fehan vs Gavin in Tour de Road America

The Corvette Challenge at Road America

There will be plenty of action this weekend as Corvette Racing returns to battle the Bell Motorsports Aston Martin DBR9 in Saturday’s Generac 500 at Road America. But the real contest is happening the day before as the USA takes on England in the Tour de Road America, a winner take all bicycle race featuring Corvette Racing’s Program Manager Doug Fehan (GoDoug) of Birmingham, Michigan vs #4 C6.R Corvette Driver Oliver Gavin of Yardly, England.

The Corvette Challenge match race featuring Fehan against Gavin will take place on Friday, August 8 in a 4.045-mile sprint around the 14 turn Road America race track. Billed as Experience and Treachery vs Youth and Enthusiasm, USA vs England and my favorite, Management vs Labor, the winner will have bragging rights within the Corvette Racing team as well as knowing their hard work is helping the Lance Armstrong Foundation fight cancer.

DOUG: “Fitness plays an important role throughout the Corvette Racing team. As program manager, I try to lead by example – and it’s clear that some team members need a little work. Finishing the London Marathon was certainly a glamorous achievement for Oliver, but a bike race at Road America will separate the men from the boys. Remember, the British had the prettiest uniforms, but we won the war!”

OLIVER: “I’m younger, fitter, stronger – and smarter. Despite his advanced age, I’m sure that Doug will push himself hard because he wants to win as badly as I do. Knowing him as I do, I’m confident that it won’t be a clean fight, but I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve as well. I’ve done marathons and triathlons, but the bicycle race with Doug will certainly be the greatest challenge yet. I’m not sure if it’s a good career move to beat the boss, but I’m going for it!”

The two contestants in the Corvette Challenge Bicycle Race are also raising funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Currently, Fehan is significantly ahead of Gavin in fundraising, and the word on the street is that GoDoug is upping the ante by offering the top bidder a hot lap around Road America in a Pratt & Miller Corvette C6RS as well as a shirt autographed by the entire Corvette Racing team. “Show me the money!” declared Fehan. “The ALMS has a Green Challenge for the environment, but we’ve got our own Green Challenge for Corvette Racing fans, and it’s all about American greenback dollars for the fight against cancer. If they want to back a winner, they’ll pledge for me, but even if they choose to support Gavin, at least their donation will go to a good cause.”

VetteGirl.TV Video Series

If you haven’t yet seen Becky Anderson AKA Vette Girl tearing up some of the best tracks in America in a borrowed Corvette Z06, head over to the internet show’s newly launched website, www.vettegirl.tv. The show is off to a fast start with five episodes already produced and posted, and they can all be viewed on the new site.

Becky’s enthusiasm for going fast is infectious. For those of us that have never taken a Corvette to a track event, its interesting to see what happens next as we’re new to this experience as well. And for you guys who do take their Corvettes to the track, watch out for the Blue DC C5 Z06 sporting the number 13, because the girl driving it only has one thing on her mind and it doesn’t involve following your ugly ass.

Corvette Racing's Ron Fellows wins the Nationwide NAPA 200

A quick note of congratulations goes out to Corvette Racing’s Ron Fellows who won the Nationwide Series NAPA 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal over the weekend. Fellows took an early pit stop and then gradually worked his way to the front. The race called 25 laps shy of 74 due to rain. Ron was driving the #5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet from Dale Earnhardt Jr’s JR Motorsports. This was his fourth career Nationwide Series victory and the first time he’s won a NASCAR race at Montreal.

Talking about the rain and track conditions, Ron said “That was difficult, we’ve had a little bit of that over in France with the Corvette at Le Mans. But this was good fun. Now I’ve got to make Dale Jr. let me run next week [when the Nationwide Series goes to Watkins Glen].”

Ron will be back in drivers seat come next weekend. Earnhardt is scheduled to race in the No. 5 Chevy in the Nationwide Series while Fellows will drive the No. 01 Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in the Sprint Cup race.

Corvette Racing: The 24 Hours of Spa

The GMAC Phoenix Carport #6 Corvette C6.R

With the factory-backed Corvette Racing team having the weekend off, we’ll be watching the two Corvette privateer racing teams compete in the FIA-GT Championship at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium. The 4.3 mile track is one of the most historic and challenging in the world and with three Corvettes battling the likes of Maserati, Saleen, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin, its definitely a race worth watching. Unlike LeMans or the ALMS, there are no prototype classes so the GT1 cars will also be competing for the overall win.

Germany’s Phoenix Carsport will be defending the GT1 Championship in the GMAC #5 and #6 Corvette C6.R’s. The Belgium-based Selleslagh Racing Team (SRT) will also be racing a Corvette C6.R.

Last year’s race was a battle of the Corvette C6.R vs the Maserati MC12 with Carsport Holland’s #5 Corvette C6.R taking the win after the class leader Vitaphone Maserati MC12 missed a turn and landed in the gravel. The 2007 race was also quite exciting as Corvette Racing’s Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin joined up with the Luc Alphand Adventures Corvette racing team. Unfortunately, I don’t see an entry this year for the distinctive White C6.R.

European-based Corvette Motorsport will be offering live coverage of the 24 Hours of Spa through their website. Live on-board cameras and pit feeds will be streamed. Combined with timing and scoring information and live chat for fans, it should be relatively easy for us US-based Corvette Racing fans to keep up with all the action that happens in a 24 hour endurance race. In the first Pre-Qualifying reports, we see that Corvettes are running 1-2 (Phoenix Racing/SRT) with Vitaphone’s Maserati MC12 third.

Live coverage of the practices and qualifying kicks off today and the race is scheduled to start at 4:00 PM local time. I believe that translates to 10 AM Eastern Time.

The #3 and #4 Corvette C6.Rs Battle for the win at Mid Ohio

Just because there are no other teams competing in the ALMS GT1 class doesn’t mean there’s no competition for Corvette Racing. Taking a line from an old joke, I was watching a fight over the weekend when a race broke out. The GT1 class is all about the win, and according to Jan Magnussen “If you aren’t first, your last”. Magnussen and co-driver Johnny O’Connell extended their win steak to four in a row and fifth for the season by taking the checkered flag at Saturday’s Mid-Ohio Acura Sports Car Challenge. But the win wasn’t easy as our video recap shows.

It was at the two hour mark that the race for the flag really began. During a yellow caution period, both the #3 and #4 C6.R Corvettes entered pit row together for fuel, tires and a drivers change. With O’Connell in the #3 Corvette and Beretta in the #4 car, both Corvettes dropped and left their stalls simultaneously and a bit of fender rubbing occurred as the Corvettes went door to door, blowing through a red flag at the pit exit lane with Beretta finally getting out in front. The shenanigans on pit road were not appreciated by the officiating crew and both cars were sent to the penalty box for 2 minutes and thirty seconds.

“We are a very competitive group,” said O’Connell after tallying his 33rd career ALMS victory. “Both cars left at the same time and it was like the Hatfields and McCoys for a moment with two guys arguing for the same area of road. It was just two great race cars today running in very difficult conditions.”

After leaving the Penalty area, O’Connell was able to pass Beretta but both Corvettes were again summoned to the penalty box where they sat for five minutes for what officials called “taking unjustifiable risks”.

“A prototype drew down inside of him and he went wide,” O’Connell recalled. “I was on the proper line and my momentum carried me by. He was just gathering it up, but there was a gaggle of prototypes doing battle and it was chaotic.”

O’Connell maintained the lead and finished first in class. The win gives Magnussen and O’Connell 126 points for the Championship cup while Gavin and Beretta are 16 points back with 110.

“Who says you need more than two cars in a class to have exciting racing?” asked Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. “I think what we saw today are two cars that are separated by thousandths of a second on the race track and separated by thousandths of a second in pit lane. Each of them is trying to win. I think it was exciting for the fans, and it was certainly exciting for us in the pits. It’s hard to deny the intramural rivalry that exists, and we saw two guys racing hard and getting caught up in the heat of the moment. We’ll all learn a lesson from today’s race.”

Corvette Racing will head to Road America for the Generac 500 in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on August 9th at 4pm CDT. SPEED will televise the race tape-delayed on Sunday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. EDT.

The #3 Corvette C6.R at Lime Rock

The #3 Corvette C6.R is on a roll this season with Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen picking up their fourth ALMS win Saturday at the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock. The 1.51 road course at Lime Rock proved again to be a beast with heavy traffic and several caution periods. The duo was a lap down with 25 minutes to go when a gearbox issue forced Olivier Beretta to pit the #4 C6.R, sealing the victory for the #3 Corvette.

The race between sister cars and crew was highlighted when O’Connell emerged from the pits late in the race after a splash and go fuel stop. The two velocity yellow Corvettes were door to door with O’Connell holding the inside line to the next corner. Beretta couldn’t keep the speed up on the outside and was forced to tap the brakes and fall behind the #3 C6.R.

“It was looking dark for a while, but No. 3 Corvette C6.R was a great race car today,” Magnussen said. “I was unlucky with traffic in my stint, and then just after Johnny got into the car, the race leader was between the two Corvettes when the yellow flag came out. We lost nearly a full lap on the wave-by. It looked grim, but then we got back on the lead lap when the other car had to stop. Then they had a small problem and stopped again. We needed just a few gallons of ethanol to make it to the finish, and Johnny just pipped Olivier coming out of the pit lane. That was very exciting!”

“There are so many races we could have won but for bad luck,” said O’Connell. “I don’t know if we should have won this one, but I’m going to take it!”

“When I came out of the pits after the last stop, I saw Olivier coming,” O’Connell continued. “I held the inside line, and the only way he was going to take me was on the outside – and that would have been impossible.”

O’Connell earned his 32nd career ALMS victory and it was his first win at Lime Rock. O’Connell and Magnussen now hold a 12 point lead (106-94) over teammates Gavin and Beretta with six races remaining.

Corvette Racing’s next event is the Acura Sports Car Challenge at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, on Saturday, July 19. NBC will televise the race tape-delayed on Sunday, July 20, at 12 p.m. EDT.

Corvette Racing: Gavin Scores Pole at Lime Rock

The #4 Corvette C6.R

Fresh off their dual podium finish at Le Mans, Corvette Racing heads to Connecticut for the 1.51 mile slugfest known as Lime Rock. Oliver Gavin in the #4 Corvette took the pole with a lap of 54.792 (102.288 mph) finishing 0.247 seconds faster than Jan Magnussen in the #3 Corvette. The Bell Motorsports Aston Martin was also to return to competition but did not qualify after a crash in today’s second practice session.

The year’s visit to Lime Rock brings a bit of the unknown as the track was reconfigured and freshly paved. The distance is relatively the same but the corners have increased from 8 to 10.

“The biggest challenge is that we have very limited data on the new Lime Rock track layout,” said Ken Flory, chief engineer for the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R driven by Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen. “While we have maps of the new sections, they don’t show the elevations, banking, and specific details of the track. With new paving on the entire track, the grip level is a mystery as well.”

“We plan to use maximum instrumentation on the cars to gather as much information as we can in the first practice session,” Flory revealed. “We’ll pay close attention to tire temperatures and suspension ride heights initially. The team typically begins the race weekend with similar setups on both Corvette C6.Rs, and then we take different directions to evaluate various options. Then for the race, the setups tend to converge and we end up with similar combinations on the No. 3 and No. 4 Corvettes.”

Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussem lead the GT1 Championship by eights points but Lime Rock has been good to Gavin Beretta, who have won here 3 times in four starts since 2004.

“Usually we have come off a good result at Le Mans,” said Gavin, who was third in class with Beretta and Max Papis this year. “But we are all ready to put that behind us. We just had some rough luck and a rough run for the first half of the season. Putting that behind us, this is the best way to start.”

The ALMS Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock is Saturday, September 12th at 2:05 pm EST. SPEED will air the race tape-delayed on Sunday, June 13 from Noon to 3 pm EST.

#63 Corvette Makes Contact with LMP2 Lola Judd

Once the rain started falling, cars began making a beeline for the pits to change to their rain tires. Unfortunately for Johnny O’Connell, his #63 Corvette C6.R still had racing slicks on when he came up on the #33 LMP2 Lola Judd practically stopped on the entrance of pit row.
