Corvette Racing: The #3 Corvette C6.R Makes History at Sebring

History was made for Corvette Racing and the three drivers of the #3 C6.R at Saturday’s running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Johnny O’Connell earned his record-setting eighth Sebring class victory. Jan Magnussen won his 100th career victory in the 100th American LeMans race. Antonio Garcia got his first win with Corvette Racing. Corvette Racing also broke the ALMS record for laps completed in the GT class and won the Michelin Green X Challenge. All in all, Saturday’s endurance race couldn’t have gone any better for a team preparing for LeMans.

Johnny O’Connell, Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia completed 349 laps in the #3 Corvette C6.R, finishing a lap ahead of the #4 Corvette C6.R piloted by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta and Marcel Fassler. The two Corvettes finished 6th and 7th overall. The #3 Corvette C6.R also won the inaugural Michelin Green X Challenge.

Corvette Racing Sets Records in Final GT1 Appearance in Sebring 12-Hour Race

SEBRING, Fla. – The 57th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring was a history-making event for Corvette Racing. For Johnny O’Connell, it was a record-setting eighth Sebring class victory. For Jan Magnussen, it was his milestone 100th career victory in the American Le Mans Series’ landmark 100th race. For Antonio Garcia, it was his first win with Corvette Racing. And for Corvette Racing, it was a perfect performance that included an ALMS record for laps completed in the GT class at Sebring to jump start the 10th anniversary of America’s premier production sports car racing team.

O’Connell, Magnussen and Garcia completed 349 laps in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R to take a one-lap victory in the GT1 class over Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, and Marcel Fassler in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R. The Corvettes finished sixth and seventh overall, and the winning car set a record for the most laps completed by a GT car in ALMS competition in America’s most demanding endurance race. The No. 3 Corvette C6.R also won the inaugural Michelin Green X Challenge race-within-a-race with the best score in the GT classes based on performance, efficiency, and environmental impact.

“In our final race in the GT1 class at Sebring, I think we raised the bar high by setting an all-time laps completed record and running a flawless race,” said Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan. “Today was an example of what we’ve done since the inception of this program – continuous improvement. This gives us a solid foundation for going to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and completing our mission over there.”

Gavin started on the GT1 pole with Magnussen in close pursuit. The first round of pit stops at 49 minutes into the race proved decisive. Magnussen pitted first, handing off to O’Connell. One lap later, Gavin pitted and was replaced by Beretta. The two cars emerged from their stops side-by-side, with O’Connell taking the lead for good in Turn 10. The No. 3 Corvette C6.R then held its advantage through 11 long hours of racing and 11 more pit stops.

“I had the advantage of a killer lap going out of the pits,” said O’Connell, who extended his record as the all-time leader in Sebring victories with his eighth career win on the historic circuit. “Maybe our car was a little better in that stint. I came by as Olivier was coming out of the pits on cold tires, so he had knife for a gunfight on that first lap. Anytime you get close dicing like that it’s a lot of fun, and Olivier was pushing me every bit of the way.

“I don’t know why this place has always been special for me, but a lot of it is that I’ve been here with good people,” O’Connell continued. “When you have a race car prepared by Corvette Racing and the support of Chevrolet, this is how you want to start a year. To have won this so many times with Ron Fellows, and now to do it with Jan and Antonio, makes me very excited about the future. Not only did we win the race, we also won the Michelin Green X Challenge, so there is a lot for Chevrolet to be proud of today.”

Magnussen reached a milestone with his 100th career victory. The 35-year-old racer from Denmark has scored wins in single seaters, touring cars, prototypes, and GTs. His resume now includes 23 ALMS victories.

“Winning my 100th race in the 100th ALMS event is perfect,” said Magnussen. “I’m so happy for Johnny, and to welcome Antonio to the team with a win couldn’t be better. We had a nearly perfect race – we didn’t make any mistakes and everything went according to plan. A victory here is the best possible preparation we could have for Le Mans.”

Garcia completed a trio of endurance racing victories after wins in the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 2009 Rolex 24 at Daytona. The Spaniard notched his first ALMS victory in his debut with Corvette Racing.

“Starting off with a win with my new team, I can’t ask for anything more,” Garcia said. “Everything went perfectly, the team did a magnificent job, and the pit stops were awesome. For me today was a learning race, and I think I achieved everything that I wanted.”

The gap between the two Corvettes was never more than 30 seconds through the long day of racing. Gavin and Magnussen started and finished the race, running five stints, while their teammates each completed four stints.

“It came down to a couple of little things that just didn’t quite work out for us,” Gavin said. “We had some bad luck with the cautions and safety car, and we were a little off on tire pressure or the setup on a few stints. There was really almost no difference in performance between the two Corvette C6.Rs, so it was going to take just one small thing to throw it one way or the other. Unfortunately it didn’t work out our way today, but there’s a lot of positives for us to take away from this. We had a car that was strong and that we all could drive well.”

Beretta agreed: “It was a good race, but we just had some little issues and some bad luck on the pace car,” he said. “Congratulations to the No. 3 Corvette, they did a perfect race. We are leaving Sebring with two cars in perfect condition, and that is the most important thing.”

Marcel Fassler has raced Corvette C6.Rs extensively in Europe, and the Swiss driver was delighted by his first race with the Corvette Racing team. “This gives me confidence going to Le Mans because the car was reliable on a very tough track,” Fassler said. “To finish second is never nice, but the No. 3 Corvette today was a little faster and they did a good job. I congratulate them, and I really look forward to Le Mans.”

Corvette Racing backed up its overall victory in last year’s inaugural ALMS Green Challenge with a win in the first Michelin Green X Challenge at Sebring. Created jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, SAE International and ALMS, the Green X Challenge ranks the competitors on the amount of energy used, greenhouse gases emitted, and petroleum displaced.

“Today’s race was the final appearance by Corvette Racing in the GT1 category at Sebring, and we ran an absolutely perfect race with cellulosic E85 ethanol fuel,” said Steve Wesoloski, GM Racing Road Racing Group manager. “We accomplished our mission and demonstrated Chevrolet’s technical capabilities. This same technology is applied to other vehicles in Chevy’s product line, and that’s what we’re demonstrating every time the Corvettes are on the race track.”

Corvette Racing’s next event is the Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series at Long Beach in Long Beach, Calif., on April 18.

2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

In commemorating the 10th anniversary of GT1 racing in the American LeMans Series, GM is producing 600 2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Editions and selected the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring as the appropriate place to debut the new cars to the public. On the Friday before the 12 hour race, GM’s Corvette team including Product Manager Harlan Charles and Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter were on hand along with the six drivers of Corvette Racing to introduce the limited edition “Jake” Corvettes.

The Corvette GT1 Championship cars shown in the video were the first six cars of the series built. Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter remarked that the Corvettes were just completed within the last week and were shipped down from Bowling Green. The six Corvette drivers picked up the keys of the Corvettes following an ALMS drivers meeting and drove them down to Corvette Racing’s paddock. A little later, the six Corvette Racing drivers drove them over to the Corvette Corral to be viewed by the enthusiasts gathered at the hospitality tent.

The GT1 Championship Editions are limited to just 600 units: 200 Coupe, 200 Convertible and 200 Z06. Each of these body styles will have 100 in Yellow/Black and 100 in Black/Yellow. The series also has its own specific VIN sequences: 300001 for the Velocity Yellows and 40001 for those in Black.

The GT1 Championship Edition features C6.R livery inspired graphics which feature the mascot “Jake” ghost-painted on the hood bulge, years of the championships and drivers flags. Also making the Corvettes unique are the ZR1 full width body color spoiler and chrome wheels. The coupes and convertibles include the Z51 Performance Package, NPP Performance exhaust and MX0 6-Speed Paddle Shift Automatics. The GT1 Corvette coupe also comes with the optional C2L Dual Roof package. All three GT1 models get the optional U3U Navigation Systems as well.

Inside the GT1 Corvettes you’ll find a custom leather wrapped ebony interior with exclusive yellow accent stitching, GT1 embroidery on the leather seats, instrument panel and center console armrest. Under the hood is a special engine cover with a carbon pattern and yellow Corvette lettering. A windshield banner is also included and is installed by the owner.

Pricing for the GT1 Championship Edition starts at $65,310 for the 4LT Coupe, $71,815 for the 4LT Convertible and $86,385 for the 3LZ Corvette Z06.

Gavin and the #4 Corvette C6.R Claim the Pole at Sebring

The #4 Corvette C6.R driven by three-time ALMS GT1 Champion Oliver Gavin posted the fastest lap around Sebring Raceway’s 3.7 mile 17 corner track to take the Pole for this Saturday’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Gavin earned the pole by lapping the black Corvette C6.R at 1:57.882 (112.994 mph), besting Jan Magnussen by .321 seconds. Magnussen’s fastest lap in the #3 Corvette C6.R was 1:58.203 (112.687 mph).

Gavin has won the GT1 pole three times at Sebring with the last one coming in 2005. This year’s pole gives Gavin 18 total in the ALMS and ties him for second on the series list of pole winners.

“It’s great to come away with a pole as we begin the 10th anniversary for Corvette Racing,” Gavin said. “Anytime you manage to beat Jan in qualifying, you’ve earned your money.

“Sebring is a tough event, very hard on the cars and the drivers, and great preparation for Le Mans,” Gavin continued. “Everyone is very mindful of the fact that Le Mans is the goal, but all of us would like to have the first 10th anniversary victory here in Sebring.”

The day wasn’t apparently without some drama. BadBoyVettes.com reported that during a practice session, an Acura LMP went “Road-Hog” for track position and the unintended contact resulted in a right rear tire puncture and fender damage to the Black #4 Corvette C6.R. Nothing too serious and once repaired it was back to work for the team.

The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring is scheduled to start at 10:30 am EST on Saturday, March 21st. The race will be televised live on SPEED from 10 am to noon and from 2 to 11 pm Eastern.

Corvette Racing: The GT1 Championship C6R Livery

One of the anticipations for each new racing season is when the Corvette Racing team rolls out the new livery. For 2009, Corvette Racing and GM close the marketing loop by running the two C6.Rs with the new GT1 Championship livery. Like the forthcoming limited edition GT1 Championship Coupes, Convertibles and Z06s, the new livery features the #3 C6.R in familiar Velocity Yellow with black striping while the #4 C6.R is reversed in Black with Yellow accents.

Over the years we’ve been treated to some great designs, from last year’s “Jack Scrape” to the Bad Boy “Jake” livery at Monterey in 2007. The 2009 GT1 Championship livery is a hit as a C6.R in Black is just about the most menacing-looking car on the track. The fact that you can buy a street version of these Corvettes makes the livery special as well. Only one other time as GM offered an ALMS C6.R replica, the 2007 Arctic White Ron Fellows Edition Z06.

As there are no other GT1 class entries, the 12 hour endurance race will be the ultimate practice session for this June’s assault on the 24 Hours of LeMans. But that doesn’t mean the two factions are going to take it easy on each other. Remember the door-banging-on-pit-row incident at Mid Ohio in 2008 anyone?

Speaking of racing, the Corvette C6.Rs were out on the track today in two practice sessions. #3′s Jan Magnussen holds the fastest time with a lap of 1:56.907 while #4′s Marcel Fassler ran just 0.162 seconds behind with a lap of 1:57.069.

The 2009 GT1 Championship Edition Corvettes will make their public debut on Friday at 1pm at the Corvette Paddock in Sebring. We’ll be there for the unveiling and hope to have plenty of video and pictures to share.

Corvette Racing: The 24 Hours of Le Mans Entry List

The Corvette C6.Rs at Le Mans

The ACO has released the entry list for the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans. In what will be Corvette Racing’s final battle for GT1 glory at La Sarthe, the factory-backed Corvette C6.Rs will face off against two rival Aston Martin DBR9′s, two Lamborghini Murcielago’s and two other Corvette C6.R’s from privateer Luc Alphand Aventures.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment came a few weeks ago when the factory Aston Martin Racing team announced a move to a Lola Aston Martin LMP1, depriving the Corvette C6.Rs a final chance at retribution against the former GT1 class winners from the last two years. The two DBR9′s that will compete in GT1 this year come from Gigawave Motorsport and Jetalliance Racing.

The Eight GT1 Entries:

  • #60 Gigawave Motorsport: Aston Martin DBR9
  • #63 Corvette Racing: Corvette C6.R

The ACO failed to deliver an invite to Lou Gigliotti’s #28 GT2 Corvette which according to Lou was the linchpin for funding their 2009 ALMS campaign. We’ll have to wait and see what the LG Motorsports/Riley Technologies plans will be for the American Le Mans series now that they know that Le Mans is no longer in the mix.

There are 14 entries in the GT2 category with a field that comprises nine Ferrari 430s. So a quick note to Pratt and Miller’s GT2 engineers – The Ferrari 430 is your obvious performance target so go get ‘em! The Drayson Racing Aston Martin V8 Vantage will also be making its debut at Le Mans in GT2.

Ebay Find of the Day: 1957 Corvette Race Car

Here is yet another Corvette race car that’s now for sale. This 1957 Corvette roadster was raced back in the sixties and seventies but its most successful campaign came in 1998 when the owner competed in and won the SVRA Paine-Weber Endurance Championship.

Powered by a 283 cubic inch V8 built by Compton Race Engines, this yellow roadster is ready to race. The Corvette underwent a restoration following the 2006 season and is currently set up for competition as a vintage racer. In addition to the new 283 ci V8, the roadster features an upgraded T-10 transmission, new ram clutch, drive shaft and flywheel. A holly 750 delivers the fuel from an ATL 40 gallon fuel cell and cold air box insures plenty of oxygen to the powerplant.

On the outside, the Corvette was repainted in Chrome Yellow and has white racing stripes, racing numbers, grill bar and new ovals. The Corvette can be raced with or without its included hardtop.

We asked our friends at the Registry of Corvette Racecars for an honest opinion about the C1 roadster and they didn’t disappoint:

Keith – This is one of the better prepared straight axle vintage racers. The only thing holding back its value is lack of documented racing history. That would put it in a class with Bob Mouat’s 1957 COPO Air box Fuelie and other straight axles that were actually raced, most of which we know well and are now sitting in museums.

Mac Lyle of Rock Hill, SC built the car. I have not seen it on the circuit since 1998 when they blitzed the SVRA to win the Paine-Weber Endurance Championship.

The downside is that the car is way too race improved and would probably not be allowed in the Monterey Historic. And although it would be a fun car to drive in SVRA or HSR races, the asking price of $65K seems a bit steep compared with what else that will buy to go vintage racing.

So that being said, here’s your chance to own a vintage Corvette race car that’s track ready. The current bid is $25,427 and the Corvette has a “Buy It Now” price set at $65,000. The auction runs ends Saturday.

2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

We got word last month of GM planning a second special edition Corvette for 2009 that would commemorate Corvette Racing’s successful 10 year run in the American Le Mans series. Now official, the 2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition celebrates over 70 victories in the ALMS, eight GT1 Manufacturer Championships and five GT1 class victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The GT1 Championship Edition is available in the Coupe, Convertible or Z06 models in either 45U Velocity Yellow or 41U Black. The series will have its own specific VIN sequences: 300001 for the Velocity Yellows which represent the #3 Corvette C6.R and 40001 for Black which represents the #4 C6.R. Only 600 will be produced this spring and those are limited to 200 for each body style and 100 in each color.

Another week, another vintage Corvette race car hitting the auction block. We received word today that the ex-Bob Mouat 1957 Corvette COPO Air-Box Fuelie will be joining the 1965 Corvette 8-Ball Cobra Killer at Worldwide Auctioneer’s Houston Classic on Saturday May 2nd.

This 1957 Corvette was delivered new to Bob Mouat in 1957 and raced until 1965 achieving 21 victories and over 50 top ten finishes. Extensively documented, its one of 23 Air-Box examples known and this is only one of six factory COPO Airbox Corvettes aquired by known racing drivers.

Vette Magazine called the race car “an open-track threat right off the assembly line”. Worldwide Auctioneer’s Managing Partner John Kruse says “this splendid, factory big brake, ‘Air-Box Fuelie’ example is the most extensively raced and well documented ’57 Corvette race car of all time.”

Other notable Corvettes available at the Houston Classic include the 1965 Caplan/Gulstrand Corvette Racer aka the 8-Ball Cobra Killer, the ex-Alan Sevadjian, John Mecum 1967/74 Corvette “Delmo Johnson Racecar”, a numbers matching 1968 Corvette L89 roadster offered at no reserve and a 1954 Corvette roadster.
