Our friends at ProTeam Corvette will be in spotlight this Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale. That’s when a very special Corvette race car with ties to NASCAR will be offered for sale during the “Salon Select 5000 collection”.

We’ve written about ProTeam’s 1953 NASCAR Corvette before which started out as VIN 211 of the first 300 Corvettes built. The first-year Corvette was repurposed as a race car through an internal Chevrolet Shop Order and originally saw action for the 1956 Flying Mile competition on Daytona Beach before entering competition in NASCAR’s International Series for sports cars.

CorvetteBlogger contributor Rick Tavel from Corvetted.com worked with ProTeam Corvette to help write their 50-page flipbook highlighting the research and history of the 1953 NASCAR Corvette and we are fortunate to be able to share some of the important history of this Corvette prior to its auction at Barrett-Jackson.

Last week the Corvette world was all a flutter over the news that the 1956 SR-2 Corvette Racecar – the first purpose-built Corvette racer built by Chevrolet – is being offered for sale.

The sale of the car is being handled by Corvette Mike Vietro for the tidy sum of $6.885 Million. To help support the sale of the car, Corvette Mike produced this video to show off the car and talk about its outstanding history.

The Corvette SR-2 Racer evokes an emotional response from everyone that sees it. At the time of it’s introduction it represented the highest level of automotive racing design and performance. This was the first General Motors “purpose-built” American Sports Racing Car from the Golden Era of Racing. The SR-2 was the combined spirit of two great men in Corvette History and culmination of many great things that were happening at GM in the early to mid-1950’s.

1956 Corvette SR-2 Racer Offered For Sale

One of the most famous Corvettes of all time is being offered for the first time ever to the general public. The noted 1956 SR-2 is being made available through Corvette Mike. The car started life as VIN #2522 and went straight to the GM Styling Studio from the St. Louis plant under Shop Order 90090. There, under the watchful eyes of Harley Earl and Zora Arkus Duntov it began its transformation into the car we know today.

A total of 3 1956 SR-2 Corvettes were built. This VIN 2522 was the first. The 2nd one was built for Bill Mitchell, and the 3rd – a show car – went to GM President Red Curtice.

[VIDEO] CorvetteBlogger Visits the Ron Fellows Driving School at Spring Mountain

This year was pretty remarkable for us here at CorvetteBlogger. Not only do we get to talk and write everyday about America’s favorite sports car – the Chevrolet Corvette – but occasionally we get to drive the new Corvettes on a race track as well!

After having the unique opportunity to drive a 2015 Corvette Stingray on GM’s Milford Road Course earlier in the year, I realized my skill level at driving the Corvette fast on the track was not something I was real comfortable with, so I took up an offer to attend a two-day Level 1 driving course at the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada.
