GRAND-AM’s Spirit of Daytona announced today that Richard Westbrook will be joining the team for the entire 2012 Rolex Sports Car Series season. Westbrook will be driving the No. 90 Corvette Daytona Prototype along with returning Spirit of Daytona Driver Antonio Garcia.
It was back in May that we brought you the news of Late Model Racecraft’s 1500 hp twin turbo Corvette ZR1 that ran 231 mph at the Texas Mile to claim the title as World’s Fastest Corvette in the Standing Mile. Not content to rest on their laurels, the Houston-based tuner has turned some wrenches on another Corvette ZR1 which they claim is now the fastest Corvette ZR1 in the world!
If there is a “one size fits all” gift we can recommend for your favorite Corvette enthusiast, it’s the DVD documentary called “The Quest”. Based on the story of Corvette’s first win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, “The Quest” tells the story of how one man’s dream to find and restore the winning Le Mans race car was cut short and how his son set out to fulfill his dad’s dream of returning the Corvette to Le Mans with its original driver to mark the 50th anniversary of its historic win.
Over the last few days, we’ve been on the receiving end of some pretty interesting rumors regarding Corvette Racing. About this time every year, Fehan and the team review their driver lineups for the coming season and decisions are made on which drivers will be offered full time rides vs the part time endurance races. What we’ve been hearing so far is that Antonio Garcia will become a full-time driver for the Corvette Racing team. Multiple unconfirmed reports are listing Olivier Beretta as the driver that Garcia will be replacing.
We can debate all day long on whether the ability to slide your car around corners with the tires spinning and a huge cloud of smoke is a real form of “racing”. But where we will probably find agreement in is that the art of drifting is definitely something that takes a lot of practice to do right. The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah has spent many hours behind the wheel of various autos and even he admitted to not having a clue on how to properly drift. So he headed to the Bondurant School of High Performance Driving where Formula Drift newcomer Corey Hosford was ready for a full day of instruction.
Three new Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototypes arrived in Daytona for two days of testing at the International Speedway as the GRAND-AM series prepares for its season opener at the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 28-29, 2012. Joining the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP that made its public debut last month was the white No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette DP, and two entries from Action Express Racing, the No. 5 and No. 9 Corvette DPs also turned their first laps.
Two icons of sports car racing will be inducted into the Sebring Hall of Fame in March. Johnny O’Connell and the Chevrolet Corvette were named as part of the 2012 group of inductees into America’s greatest sports car race hall of fame. The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, March 16 at the Chateau Elan Hotel which overlooks the historic race circuit.
Autocrossing your Corvette is great way to have some fun in your car in a safe and controlled environment. Most courses are laid out to keep speeds down and drivers rely on technique to complete the course. But just because speeds are lower than other track events doesn’t mean that one wrong move can come back to bite you as one Corvette driver found out at the Speed Ventures autocross event.
Apparently this video went viral while I was incommunicado over the Thanksgiving holiday. Two Silver Corvettes, a C6 and C5, were lined up at a stop light in the Houston neighborhood of The Woodlands. The motorist behind the duo gets a bad feeling about what is going to happen when the lights go green and starts filming. Sure enough, the race ends badly for both drivers and cars and now police have issued warrants for their arrest.
With much fanfare, Chevrolet unveiled the new Corvette Daytona Prototype last Tuesday at the Daytona International Speedway. The next day, Spirit of Daytona driver Antonio Garcia had the honor of turning the first laps during the GRAND-AM Rolex Series test day. Those laps were captured on video and you can see (and hear) the new Corvette-branded race car after the jump.
