Chevrolet is ready to kick off the GRAND-AM Racing 2012 season as five new Corvette Daytona Prototypes are ready for their first combat mission at this weekend’s Rolex 24 at the Daytona International Speedway. The five Corvette DPs will allow Chevrolet to challenge for the overall win at the Rolex 24 for the first time in 11 years. Also competing at the Rolex 24 under the Team Chevy banner are three Camaros running in the GT class.
It was announced today that Corvette Racing ace Oliver Gavin will be joining the Spirit Of Daytona’s GRAND-AM racing team where he’ll be driving in three endurance races during the 2012 Rolex Sports Car Series. Gavin will drive the new Corvette Daytona Prototype with current Corvette Racing endurance team mates Antonio Garcia and Richard Westbrook in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen and the Indianapolis 3 Hour race.
GRAND-AM’s Spirit of Daytona announced today that Richard Westbrook will be joining the team for the entire 2012 Rolex Sports Car Series season. Westbrook will be driving the No. 90 Corvette Daytona Prototype along with returning Spirit of Daytona Driver Antonio Garcia.
Three new Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototypes arrived in Daytona for two days of testing at the International Speedway as the GRAND-AM series prepares for its season opener at the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 28-29, 2012. Joining the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP that made its public debut last month was the white No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette DP, and two entries from Action Express Racing, the No. 5 and No. 9 Corvette DPs also turned their first laps.
With much fanfare, Chevrolet unveiled the new Corvette Daytona Prototype last Tuesday at the Daytona International Speedway. The next day, Spirit of Daytona driver Antonio Garcia had the honor of turning the first laps during the GRAND-AM Rolex Series test day. We’ve been hearing rumblings in recent weeks that Chevrolet was set to unveil a new prototype car for the 2012 racing season. Yesterday at the storied Daytona International Speedway, those rumors gave way to the real deal as Chevy pulled back the cover on an all new 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype. The new Corvette Daytona Prototype will make its racing debut in the 50th anniversary of the GRAND-AM Road Racing Series Rolex 24 at Daytona next January 26-29, 2012.
