The voting ended Sunday night for the American Le Mans Series “From the Fans” award and as you may know, we were pushing Corvette Racing pretty hard. Now it’s time for us to make a similar push for Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen, drivers of the #4 Corvette C6.R who were nominated for the prestigious Most Popular Driver award.
Racing at Monterey is always a challenge and with the ALMS Drivers and Manufacturers Championship titles on the line, Corvette Racing needed a strong result to keep them in contention. For six hours, Corvettes battled BMW, Ferrari and Porsche on the roller coaster that is Laguna Seca raceway. Did the team succeed and force a “game seven” for the championships at Petit Le Mans? Gavin Puts No. 4 Corvette C6.R on GT Front Row for Third Straight Race
MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 16, 2011 – As the laps counted down in qualifying for Saturday’s ModSpace American Le Mans Series Monterey, Corvette Racing engineer Chuck Houghton radioed to driver Oliver Gavin, “A tenth of a second will put you in P2.” Gavin responded with his quickest lap of the 15-minute qualifying session, taking the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R from sixth to second on the GT grid.

Corvette Racing’s Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen are chasing the #56 BWM’s Joey Hand and Dirk Muller who lead the Driver’s Championship by 25 points. Corvette is third in the running for the Manufacturer’s Championship, down 5 points to second place Porsche and 30 points behind BMW.

One of the benefits of the American Le Mans Series new television deal with ESPN is the ability to watch previous races and qualifying sessions from the ALMS video archive. Having missed Friday’s live ESPN3 feed, I pulled up a replay of the practice/qualifying session for the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix and came across a couple of segments worth sharing.
