New Paint Chips Unveiled for 2008 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on April 12, 2007

Our January post about Advance 2008 Corvette Production Info appears to be taking shape as we get closer to this month’s debut of the 2008 Corvette at the Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash. Over at DigitalCorvettes.com, CorvetteConti posted images of the two new exterior colors as well as an interior swatch with a cool new shade of red.

Corvette Exterior 85U Jetstream Blue Metallic Corvette Exterior 89U Crystal Red Metallic Two new custom leather wrap interiors
The new exterior colors are 85U Jetstream Blue Metallic and 89U Crystal Red Metallic. They are replacing the popular LeMans Blue and Monterey Red. The two new interior combinations are being added to the seven combinations currently being produced. The new custom leather wrap interiors are named 245 Sienna and 425 Linen. According to our early post, the Z06 is supposed to pick up these options as well. As an interesting aside, and I only mention it because it comes from the king of watermarks himself, Conti hints that another exterior color could be making its way onto the 2008 Corvette sometime after the first of the year. That color is described as Mocha Bronze Metallic.

Lotus AdvertisementA recent ad from a Lotus dealer compares the Elise to four other convertible sports cars in the same class. Unfortunately for Lotus, the ad is filled with several inaccuracies, and has become a joke among enthusiasts. The Corvette Convertible, for example is listed as having a 3.2L 6 cylinder engine. Not since 1955 has there been a 6 cylinder available in the Corvette. And secondly, the Corvette’s 0-60 mph time is blasphemous! 5.4 seconds! Humph. That wrong piece of data came actually came from Edmunds.com. Chevrolet lists the Corvette’s 0-6 mph time at 4.2 seconds. Lastly, who would want a BMW M3 Convertible? According to this Lotus advertisement, the M3′s city/highway mileage is 1/23!! If the dealer group continues to run ads like these, Lotus might as well hire pitchman extraordinaire Joe Isuzu.

Diesel-Powered Corvette Subject of April Fool’s Joke

by Keith Cornett on April 2, 2007

I am usually a sucker for a good April Fool’s Joke but I doubt that even I would have fallen for this one. The kids at Cars.About.com posted yesterday that the Chevrolet would be introducing a diesel-powered Corvette next year as a 2009 model and would call it the Corvette TDI:

Chevrolet has announced that they will introduce a diesel-powered Corvette next spring as a 2009 model. The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette TDI will be powered by a specially-designed 5.7 liter V8 diesel with twin turbochargers. Output for the engine, developed in cooperation with Isuzu, is estimated at 350 horsepower and 675 lb-ft of torque. “We feel that with its high fuel economy and strong low-end torque characteristics, the turbodiesel is the perfect engine for the Corvette,” says a General Motors spokesperson. Early tests indicate that the Corvette TDI accelerates from 0 to 60 in just over 4 seconds and achieves real-world fuel economy of 25 to 30 MPG. Chevrolet has hinted that if the Corvette TDI is a hit with buyers, they may consider phasing out gasoline-powered Corvettes altogether and making the turbodiesel engine the exclusive powerplant for the iconic American sports car.
Of course, we’ve seen real stories about the Corvette that could have been April Fools jokes – like the V6 Corvette or a Corvette Stingray built on the Kappa platform. Still, it will be interesting to see which sites run with the story.

Corvette Performance Academy Launched Across Europe

by Keith Cornett on April 2, 2007

The Z06 Corvette hits the trackIn a move to further position Corvette for the European sports car market comes the the Corvette Performance Academy. The Academy, which consists of a fleet of ten Corvette C6 models and four Z06 models, will give drivers the opportunity to see what the Corvette can do when pushed to its limits on a controlled track course. Three different levels of training are offered, aimed at both the potential Corvette driver as well as those more experienced Corvette owners. Level One is the Corvette Safety Training Course. With the Academy’s professional instructors, drivers will learn the basics of handling the Corvette test tracks in Germany. The day-long course includes four, 75-minute driving sessions. Slaloms, braking tests, low grip skidpans and learning about understeer and oversteer, make it an experience to remember. Level Two is the Corvette Performance Training course, and is aimed for more experienced participants. Four, ninety-minute driving sessions work on getting the best from the superb dynamics of the Corvette, balancing the car using the throttle and steering. The day-long course is offered at tracks in Germany, Sweden, France and Belgium. Level Three is the Z06 Advanced Training course. Only the most experienced and skilled drivers can participate, and they must have completed the first two levels of training. The Z06 course takes place at the Goodyear test tracks of Colmarberg in Luxembourg and Miréval in France. Each Z06 course is limited to just 12 participants to ensure maximum track time. The focus of the Z06 course is the development of basic racing techniques to transition drivers from the C6 to the Z06.

1958 Dual Quad Corvette ConvertibleBarrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach Collector Car Auction begins tonight and Speed TV will be broadcast three hours of coverage beginning at 9pm eastern time. Tonight and Friday night’s 6 hours of coverage will be tape-delayed, but on Saturday, Speed TV will be broadcasting the auction live from 12 noon to 8 pm. Time to set the TIVO! Looking through the list of available Corvettes, this 1958 Convertible really caught my eye and will be one to watch when it crosses the auction block. Lot number 674 is a 283 ci/245 hp dual quad Corvette in Panama Yellow with White Coves and a charcoal interior. The engine is coupled to a 4-speed transmission and it has the rare power top option. Less than 12% of the Corvettes in 1958 had the RPO 473 Power Folding Top option. The Corvette was recently treated to a no expenses spared restoration to NCRS specifications. Check out the awards this Corvette has won over the last couple of years: Multiple NCRS Regional and National Top Flight Awards 2004-2006
NCRS Performance Verification Award 2006
Bloomington Gold Certification 2004
Gold Spinner Concourse Award 2004
TRIPLE CROWN 2004
NCRS Duntov Award 2006 The 1958 Corvette model year has seen its values skyrocket over the last five years, appreciating at a whopping 76%. Our average price is $46,200 but if this Corvette is well documented and with the awards it has won, it should be close to, if not surpass, our high price of $145,000.

PM’s Jim Dunne Bags Corvette SS Spy Shots

by Keith Cornett on March 27, 2007

Popular Mechanic’s automotive spy photographer extraordinaire Jim Dunne snagged a few photos of the Corvette SS running on a GM test track (Milford?) outside Detroit. The speculation is that the SS is one of seven new cars to be introduced at the New York Auto Show in April. Our guess is that it won’t be, as every spy shot we’ve seen is really just an SS power train mule in Z06 clothes. Word on the street is that a new ‘skin’ may differentiate the SS the same way the Z06 is different than a coupe. Still, any glimpse is better than no glimpse at all.

Popular Mechanics also makes mention off the bumper sticker under the right taillights as perhaps relating to the Duke Blue Devils, a reference to GM Chairman Rick Wagoner’s alma mater. A commenter on the AutoBlog story claims the sticker is actually a simplified map of the Nürburgring, where the SS mules have been testing. Finally, like those who have HEARD the Corvette SS, Jim Dunne describes the sound as nothing you’ve quite heard before: “The sound of the supercharged V8 during acceleration is akin to a big diesel decelerating down—sharp rattle raps—only in reverse.” As to the New York Auto Show appearance, our bet is the Corvette SS utilizes home court advantage by making its first auto show appearance at the Detroit Auto Show in 2008 before hitting the streets in 2009…

Where’s Johnny? Corvette Included in Chevy Print Ads

by Keith Cornett on March 26, 2007

Chevrolet launched a new series of print ads that ties back into the “Ain’t We Got Love” Super Bowl ad, which featured three Corvettes and included Corvette Racing’s Johnny O’Connell rapping LL Cool J’s “Going Back to Cali”. The print ads we came across were in the April 2007 Wired Magazine that featured the three full page spreads starting with the inside front cover.

The Cobalt SS The 2007 Corvette Convertible in Monterey Red The Chevrolet HHR and a classic Impala.
It’s great to see Chevrolet include the Halo car in their marketing, as the Corvette needs no advertising and is almost guaranteed to sell out each model year. Chevrolet should be including Corvette in future advertisements by showcasing the sports car as an example of what is right with GM. If by chance that some of its magic can rub off to the Vette’s new siblings, then all the better for Corvette, right?

Ethenol Corvette on Display for Lawmakers

by Keith Cornett on March 13, 2007

1992 Ethanol CorvetteOn display for lawmakers Monday at the Advanced Vehicle Research Center in North Carolina was a Red 1992 Corvette. One look under the hood though would tell you that something is remarkably different about this C4 Corvette. The Chevrolet V8 engine has been replaced by a four-cylinder engine capable of producing 350 horsepower by running on ethanol instead of unleaded gasoline. That is a 50 horsepower gain over the original LT1 V8 that produced 300 horsepower. The experimental Corvette was rolled out Monday for North Carolina and Pennsylvania representatives who are looking into the merits of biofuels. Richard Dell, the Executive Director of the Advanced Vehicle Research Center said, “If you are going to go green, you might as well look good doing it.”

Corvette Summer Promo Car Sells on eBay

by Keith Cornett on February 28, 2007

Corvette Summer Promo Car

Nearly 30 years after Mark Hamill and Annie Potts drove a hideous custom Corvette to B-Movie success, one of the movie’s promotional cars was offered up and sold on eBay this morning for $30,000. The buyer appears to be from the Volo Auto Museum based on his current listings.

This isn’t the original Corvette Summer car, as that had a right-wheel drive conversion and the cool bowtie tail lights. That car is part of the collection owned by MA Motorworks owner Mike Yeager.

You can also see a clip of the Corvette Summer car on YouTube.com

No Jail Time for Corvette SS Spy Photographer

by Keith Cornett on February 23, 2007

Josh Oliver from TheGMSource.com has looked into the allegations that the Spy photographer of the Red Corvette SS mule was being held in police custody and claims that that simply isn’t the case.

“We did a little research of our own and can confirm, with the utmost certainty that the gentleman in question was NOT arrested or placed in police custody. TheGMSource has been able to confirm that a civil complaint was filed today by General Motors in Romulus, Michigan. We can also confirm that no criminal charges have been filed by the Romulus Police Department and that… …an investigation is still ongoing. What is expected to happen next is a detective will be assigned to the case if it is deemed necessary. While we can not state specifics, we are told that the civil complaint is in regards to “a prototype being pictured by an employee.” So, to set the record straight. The gentleman in question was NOT arrested, nor placed in Police custody, and criminal charges are pending depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.”
We’ll keep you up to date as the story evolves.
