September 2009 Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on October 2, 2009

Good news regarding Corvette sales! GM reports that 1,585 Corvettes were sold in the month of September which was an increase of 88% from August 2009′s 746 sales. We attribute both the end of the automotive buying frenzy created by the Cash for Clunkers program and the availability of the 2010 Corvette as major contributors to the sales increase.

Corvette Clunkers: 243 C4 Corvettes Sacrificed for Govt Bounty

There’s no doubt the Cash For Clunkers program was successful for both buyers and dealers during the month and half the program was open. And I’m sure you all remember the video of the black C4 Corvette getting the sodium silicate treatment and dying a slow death. Now thanks to the final reporting going on, we learn that nearly 250 Corvettes – all C4′s – met a similar fate.

During the program’s run, 690,114 total vehicles were turned in. Digging through the list provided by Jalopnik we learned that 243 Corvettes were sacrificed for the $4,000 clunker bounty. While Corvettes only accounted for 0.03% of all clunker trade ins, what’s interesting is 100% of the Corvettes traded in were all C4s.

So we took a look at our Corvette Price Guide to see if the value of a C4 Corvette was more or less than the $4,000 trade-in value offered by the Government. Our values assume that the Corvette were in running condition and we selected the lowest value recorded for that model year as the comparison.

Model Year # of Clunkers Low Value
1984 12 $6,000
1985 91 $6,000
1986 66 $4,250
1987 63 $5,100
1988 6 $8,500
1989 5 $8,000

Many of the cars (Corvettes included) were probably in bad shape when traded. Lord knows we have seen our share of ragged out Corvettes. From the comments on the youtube video of the C4 Corvette that was destroyed, we read the car had a bad transmission, trashed interior, bad tires and a broken top so the cost to fix these items would have exceeded the Corvette’s value.

Knowing that these Corvettes will simply be crushed and discard as opposed to being parted out and recycled is the biggest shame of the Clunkers program.

Chevy Launches Webpage Dedicated 2010 Corvette Grand Sport

Like it did with last year’s launch of the 2009 Corvette ZR1, Chevy has set up a dedicated webpage to the newest Corvette model, the 2010 Grand Sport. The site contains eight photos and a description of the Grand Sport. There is also a link for downloading a PDF brochure of all 2010 Corvette models.

Checking the regular Corvette website, we see that it still contains information relating to the 2009 models. Historically, the main Corvette website site keeps the previous model year online even as the factory is producing the new models. We speculate that this is to help sell as much remaining 2009 inventory as possible before introducing visitors to the 2010 model information.

The 12-page PDF brochure is very nicely produced and contains information and photos on all 4 Corvette models: Base Coupe & Convertible, Grand Sport, Z06 and the ZR1.

You can find 2010 Corvettes arriving now to dealers. In fact, we heard from Kerbeck Corvette that they now have over 60 new 2010 Corvettes in stock. If you are interested in ordering a new 2010 Corvette or seeing what they have on the lot now, give him a call at 877-537-2325 or visit Kerbeck Corvette.

Graph Shows Small-Block Power on Corvette Through the Years

by Keith Cornett on September 15, 2009

Small-Block Power on Corvette Through the Years

“Over 50 years of small-block dominance correlates very closely with the successful run of America’s favorite sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette.”

The graph illustrates Corvette power from 1955-2006. Since then, GM has added two more small-blocks for Corvette to the list:

  • 6.2L LS3 … 430 @ 5900
  • 6.2L LS9 … 638 @ 6500

2010 Corvette Grand Sport LS3 Dry Sump Oil System Explained

The Dry Sump Lubrication System has been around now for several years as a standard option on the Corvette Z06 and the ZR1. But the with release of the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport, its the first that the system has been installed on the base LS3 engine. GM Assistant Chief Engineer for Small-Block Passenger Car Engines John Rydzweski gives us a tour of LS3′s dry sump system and we learn some interesting tidbits including where these engines are assembled.

As we’ve discussed previously, the Corvette Grand Sport program replaces the popular Z51 Performance package. With the manual Coupe version, Chevy takes the performance of the LS3 to a new level with the addition of the dry sump oil lubrication system. The system minimizes oil starvation during hard cornering.

A little know fact is that these dry-sump LS3 engines are assembled by hand alongside the LS7 and LS9 engines at the Performance Build Center at Wixom. Just like the Z06 and ZR1 power plants, these engines contain a badge with the builder’s name. They also go through the same quality tests before being shipped to Bowling Green.

Want an LS3 with the dry sump package? You’ll only find it on the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe equipped with a manual 6-speed transmission.

Corvette Assembly Plant Planning Additional Down Time

by Keith Cornett on September 8, 2009

The Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green is planning additional furloughs for workers in the coming weeks. The plant will be idled during the weeks of 9/28-10/05 and 10/12-10/19.

I wrote last week how August Corvette sales were at the lowest levels since the start of the automotive recession. Let’s hope these additional downtimes are preventative and designed to keep inventories low and not indicative of 2010 model year sales.

August 2009 Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on September 2, 2009

Corvette sales have sunk to their lowest point since the beginning of the automotive recession which started the second half of 2008. In August, GM delivered 746 Corvettes, down from 966 in July and -82% off the 4,242 Corvettes delivered in the same time period a year ago. For the calendar year (Jan-Aug) there have been 9,210 Corvettes delivered, a decline of -56.3% from 2008 sales of 21,066.
