The first 2009 Corvette ZR1 rolls off the assembly line

Chevrolet Dealer and Corvette Collector Dave Ressler was in Bowling Green yesterday to accept delivery of the first retail 2009 Corvette ZR1. Ressler is well known for buying the 6.2 liter supercharged Corvette at January’s Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction for $1 million. The special one of a kind Corvette features a unique VIN and will be the only one painted LeMans Blue.

Ressler was in the driver’s seat as the Corvette rolled off the assembly line. Next to him was his 10 month old grand daughter named Ayden Lynn who honked the horn a couple times during the event. The Corvette had a personalized license plate that read “Ayden Lynn” and Ressler referred to the ZR1 several times as his “granddaughter’s car”.

Back in January during the Barrett-Jackson auction, it was very much apparent that Ressler intended to be the high bidder of the Corvette ZR1, raising the bids in $100,000 increments and then sealing the deal at $900,000 by raising his own bid an additional $100,000 to make the gavel fall at $1 Million dollars.

The amount of money over the MSRP, estimated to be at $103,300 – $117,000 depending on options, will go to the United Way of Southeast Michigan.

After the Corvette was performance tested, it was parked outside the Bowling Green Assembly Plant next to Ressler’s other well-known Corvette, the #003 1953 Corvette which, coincidentally, he paid $1 Million for at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction back in 2006. “I’m proud to have the oldest Corvette along with the newest, best ‘Vette yet,” said Ressler.

Ressler plans to have the Corvette ZR1 trailered back to his home in Bozeman, Montana and put in his museum, where he already has 45 other Corvettes.

Japan's Special Edition Corvette: The Corvette S-Limited

GM announced yesterday the production of a limited edition Corvette specifically for the Japanese market. The Corvette S-Limited is essentially an exclusive trim package on a standard C6 Corvette and will have a limited production run of just 30 units and will be evenly split with 15 Black and 15 in Artic White.

The Corvette S will feature a leather wrapped interior, rear spoiler, a grille insert between the car’s dual exhaust and a unique front grille treatment. The Arctic White livery with receive the Linen interior accents, while the Black Corvette S-Limited will feature the Sienna interior accents. The Corvette S will be powered by the LS3 6.2L 430 hp V8 engine.

In the land of the rising sun, Corvettes are a fairly rare commodity yet demand for America’s Sports Car seems strong based on past year’s allocations. In 2006, 400 Corvettes were allocated to the Japanese market and they were all sold in one month.

This is the second limited edition Corvette being made available this year for a foreign market. In April, the Corvette Competition went on sale in Europe. That Corvette was more than just a trim package with features that included the Z51 Performance Package, Active Handling and a six-speed gear box.

The Corvette S-Limited goes on sale tomorrow (July 4th) for the cost of ¥7,980,000 or $75,329 USD.

June 2008 Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on July 2, 2008

What a difference a month makes. Last month I was happily reporting that despite the economy, GM delivered nearly 3,000 new Corvettes in May. Yesterday’s release of June’s sales report is a very different story for Corvette as sales were down sharply with only 2,082 Corvettes delivered. That’s a drop of -28.4% month to month and the decline is even greater (-31.8%) when comparing June 2008 to June 2007.

June has traditionally been a good month for Corvette sales and now all those extra Corvettes are showing up on Chevrolet dealer lots. Last month’s Corvette Stock Report showed 7,697 2008 models on the ground and as of yesterday there are now 8,760 Corvettes available at dealer’s nationwide.

This is not the best news for Chevrolet dealers as production for the 2009 Corvette models are underway and Corvettes have begun shipping from the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. However, this could be very good new for consumers. GM traditionally offers several incentives and discounts on last year’s models which is usually the only time these lot-clearing offers are made available on the Corvette. And unlike last year which saw the 2008 refreshed with the LS3 engine and a variety of interior updates, the differences between the “old” 2008 and “new” 2009 are very minor.

2009 Corvette ZR1 on the Nürburgring

Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter has finally made public the much anticipated Nürburgring lap time by the 2009 Corvette ZR1. On the morning of Friday, June 27th, GM Development Engineer Jim Mero drove the 2009 Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. The entire post from Tadge is after the jump.

I know many people have been very interested in how fast the ZR1 would be at the Ring…

Most car enthusiasts are quite familiar with the Nürburgring. Built in the 1920’s near Cologne, Germany, “the Ring” is considered to be the toughest and most challenging race track in the world.

Over the last two weeks, we have been doing our final tuning and testing there before we start ZR1 production cars. This morning (Friday June 27), General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove the Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4.

Jim commented after the lap that conditions were good except for a strong headwind down the main straight and that the lap was solid, but he felt there were a few places he could have gone faster.

The car was bone stock with the exception of the communications and safety equipment. The tires were production Michelin Pilot Sport 2’s. These tires have been developed specifically for the ZR1 and will have impressive wet traction and wear (tread wear rating = 220), in addition to excellent dry road holding. Chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs. Likewise, the engine calibrations were absolutely stock, emissions compliant and the car ran on pump (not racing) fuel. The vehicle was exactly like the cars that will be built in Bowling Green, Kentucky and sold around the world later this summer.

Despite posting one of the fastest times ever run by a production car, Nürburgring lap times were not an over-riding priority in the development of the ZR1. The truth is, if the only priority was speed at the ring, the car would not be very pleasant to drive on American roads. The ZR1 is an incredibly capable track machine, but unlike most ultra-high performance cars, it is very easy to live with on a daily basis.

The timed lap was run with a rolling start, a departure from our previous practice of standing starts. This is more aligned with current industry practice. The lap was electronically timed and confirmed with two hand-held stopwatches. An in-car video will be posted when the engineering team returns from Germany. Look for it the week of July 7!

The time falls in the range where most observers thought it would, and we are left to wonder what the outcome would have been if the Corvette ZR1 had been driven by Corvette Racing’s Jan Magnussen, who lapped the ‘ring in the Corvette Z06 with a time of 7:42.9. The ZR1′s 7:26.4 is faster than the Nissan GT-R’s time of 7:29.03 but 1.4 seconds behind the unofficial 7:25 run by the GT-R V-Spec.

As Tadge mentioned, a video of the run is forthcoming. In the meantime, this video was just posted by the guys at Because Tadge doesn’t mention whether or not the ZR1 had the track to themselves, and the video shows another car on the track, we’re unsure if this clip is actually from this morning’s 7:26.4 run.

A complete list of Nürburgring lap times can be found at wikipedia.

The 6.2L Supercharged Corvette ZR1

I received a text message yesterday from alerting me that a new video showcasing the assembly of a Corvette ZR1 was online. The video starts with the ZR1′s frame and follows the assembly process until the Corvette is completed and driven out to the back lot ready to be transported. One aspect of the video that I really enjoyed was hearing the comments made from the assembly plant workers who speak about the Corvette ZR1 with pride and enthusiasm.

Official 2009 Corvette Pricing Announced

by Keith Cornett on June 18, 2008

GM released the official 2009 Corvette Pricing schedules earlier this week and while most of the buzz centered around the $103,300 price tag for the Corvette ZR1, let’s not forget about the Coupe, Convertible and the Z06 models which will represent around 95% of the Corvettes sold next year.

There are now four distinct Corvette models with prices ranging from $47,895 for the base Coupe to $103,300 for the Corvette ZR1. The new 2009 schedule does show an increase in pricing over the 2008 model, but GM does give us some surprises with several enhancements to the 2009 models including a lower priced base convertible.

New for 2009:

  • The Corvette Convertible will be offered in a 1LT-Equipment Group package, lowering the MSRP for Convertibles to $52,550. Additionally, a power top is now standard on 2LT Convertible models.
  • Cyber Gray Metallic and Blade Silver Metallic are added, while Machine Silver Metallic is discontinued. This brings the Corvette’s exterior palette to nine colors.
  • Revised crossed flags emblem – The iconic Corvette crossed flags emblem is distinguished with a new, bright surround.
  • Two new custom leather-wrapped interiors – Dark Titanium and Ebony join Sienna and Linen as available selections.
  • Bluetooth capability – This option enables the Corvette to offer the convenience and safety of Bluetooth hands-free phone service.
  • Standard power hatch pull-down – This convenient feature is now standard on Corvette coupe and Z06 models.

New for the 2009 Corvette Z06:

  • New, “spider”-design 10-spoke Z06 wheel available in four versions: Sparkle Silver, Competition Gray and chrome
  • Color-keyed door and instrument panels with red and titanium interiors
  • Power-operated pull-down hatch now standard
  • Gray stitching on Ebony base seats (previously red)
  • New door sill plates with the Z06 logo
  • Acoustic package standard on all Z06 models
  • The Z06 also receives a larger-capacity dry-sump oiling system. It upgrades to the 10.5-quart (9.9 liters) system of the new ZR1. The previous oil system held eight quarts (7.5 liters).

Corvette ZR1: GM Releases Official Pricing

by Keith Cornett on June 17, 2008

The 6.2L Supercharged Corvette ZR1

Seems like it was forever-ago when the 2009 Corvette ZR1 was introduced at January’s GM Style event. With all the fanfare and Kid Rock to boot, the Corvette ZR1 single-handedly took over the North American Internation Auto Show. Six months later and just one month before the 6.2L Supercharged carbon fiber wonder begins production, GM is giving us the final piece of the Corvette ZR1′s puzzle: pricing and official performance statistics.

The official MSRP of the 2009 Corvette has been set at $103,300, making the Corvette ZR1 the most expensive Chevrolet ever offered. The MSRP includes the $850 destination charge that’s on every Corvette. An options package is also available for $10,000 and the chrome wheels will set you back another $2,000. Finally, and most unfortunately, the Federal Government gets in on the act with a $1,700 gas guzzler tax. So for those of you keeping track, a fully loaded 2009 Corvette ZR1 will cost you $117,000.

So what are you getting for $117,000? How about an American Super car that can stack up against any competition, foreign or domestic. We saw how the engineers ran the Corvette ZR1 to a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h) on a German test track. Now we learn that the ZR1 can run 0-60 at 3.4 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the Z06, and its 0-100 mph is 7.0 seconds for the ZR1, almost a full second faster 7.9 seconds posted by the Z06. Finally, the all-important quarter mile time is 11.3 seconds at 131 mph.

“A favorable power-to-weight ratio gives the ZR1 an advantage over the competition and performance that has to be experienced to fully appreciate,” said Tom Wallace, Corvette chief engineer. “Of course, on a racetrack, drivers of competitors’ cars may appreciate the ZR1 in a whole different manner.”

The Corvette ZR1 has an EPA fuel rating that also beats several renowned super cars. The ZR1 is estimated to get 14 mpg city and 20 highway. Ferrari’s 599 GTB Fiorano gets 11 city/15 highway, the Lamborghini Murcielago gets 8 city/13 highway and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage gets 12 city/19 highway. As Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter acknowledged in April’s Live Chat, the Corvette ZR1 is subject to a modest gas guzzler tax of $1,700.

While the standard Corvette ZR1 is based on the same interior refinements of the Corvette Z06, for the discriminating buyer with an additional $10,000, Chevrolet is offering an Options package that includes the following upgrades:

  • Power-adjustable, heated and leather-trimmed ZR1 embroidered sport seats
  • Side air bags
  • Bose premium audio system
  • Navigation system
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Power telescoping steering column
  • custom leather-wrapped interior available in four colors

The only other option available for the Corvette ZR1 are Chrome Wheels, which will add an additional $2,000 to the MSRP.

The Corvette ZR1 has been a long time coming and with production starting in July, it should be just a couple of more months before we start seeing them at shows and on the street. Chevrolet has produced a true super car that’s ready to compete on the world stage. Now, about the C7 Corvette…
