Florida Man Claims Ownership of the 1960 No.1 Briggs Cunningham Corvette

The saga surrounding the #1 Briggs Cunningham Corvette that raced at the 1960 24 Hours of Le Mans took another surprising turn over the weekend after its planned public unveiling Friday at Corvettes at Carlisle was abruptly canceled due to undisclosed security concerns. We have now learned that a Florida resident is claiming that the Corvette belonged to his father and says it was stolen from their backyard in 1976.

The public reveal of the #1 1960 Briggs Cunningham Corvette racer Friday afternoon at the Corvettes at Carlisle show in Carlisle, PA. was canceled due to security concerns. A statement from Lance Miller was read to the crowd who gathered at the grandstand to witness the unveiling of the former Le Mans Corvette, which had just been found after being lost for 50 years.

Corvette Auction Preview: Mecum Monterey 2012

Mecum Auctions will be in Monterey, California this weekend for their annual August sale. The auction runs August 16-18 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course. Velocity will have 18 hours of live coverage of the auction. Nearly 60 Corvettes are scheduled to cross the block including a black 1968 L88 roadster, Mickey Thompson’s 1963 Z06, and a COPO 1967 convertible shown at the NY Auto Show.

Each year on the Wednesday before the annual Woodward Dream Cruise Corvette enthusiasts gather to support the Open Hands Food Pantry in Royal Oak, MI. Over the last few years organizer Larry Courtney has grown the event from a one-day cruise down famous Woodward Avenue to a multi-day festival of all things Corvette.
