2009 Corvette ZR1 on the Nurburgring

The Corvette ZR1′s Nürburgring lap time of 7:26.4 last month has indelibly cemented the fact that this is the fastest Corvette ever produced by General Motors. Driven by GM Development Engineer Jim Mero, the Corvette ZR1 ran a blistering lap with speeds approaching 180 mph on the 12.9 mile, 100 corner Nordschleife besting the previous fastest Corvette, a Z06 driven in 2005 by Jan Magnussen by nearly 17 seconds. The video of this historic run was released this afternoon by GM and can be viewed after the jump.

1989 Corvette Destroyed by Fireworks

Chicago area resident Rich Szatkowski spent the 4th of July finishing the interior restoration of his prized 1989 Corvette: New seats, new carpet, new steering wheel and a new stereo. As he washed the carpet earlier in the day, he left the roof panel off so it could dry out properly. Unfortunately, a neighborhood firework found its way through the open roof, igniting the interior and destroying the Corvette.

The news gets even worse for Rich. Because the car was undergoing restoration and was not being driven, Rich did not have insurance on the Corvette.

[VIDEO] God Bless America: L88 Corvettes on Parade

by Keith Cornett on July 4, 2008

L88 Corvettes on Parade at Bloomington

Last weekend’s Bloomington Gold Corvette show featured a reunion of the “Earthquake 88′s”, Corvettes from 1967-69 that were optioned with the rare 427 ci L88 V8 engine. Only 216 examples of the 560 hp L88′s were built during the three year run and only at Bloomington Gold would you be lucky to see as many as 50 gathered in one weekend.

The parade of earth-shaking L88 Corvettes is being led by the new King of the Hill, a red 2009 Corvette ZR1 Corvette. Many of these Corvettes were originally destined for the track including the #9 Corvette race car from 1967 driven at the 24 Hour of LeMans in the 5.0+ Litre category by Bob Bondurant and Dick Guldstrand. You can see more of that 1967 L88 Corvette at YouTube.com.

In the land of the rising sun, Corvettes are a fairly rare commodity yet demand for America’s Sports Car seems strong based on past year’s allocations. In 2006, 400 Corvettes were allocated to the Japanese market and they were all sold in one month.

This is the second limited edition Corvette being made available this year for a foreign market. In April, the Corvette Competition went on sale in Europe. That Corvette was more than just a trim package with features that included the Z51 Performance Package, Active Handling and a six-speed gear box.

The Corvette S-Limited goes on sale tomorrow (July 4th) for the cost of ¥7,980,000 or $75,329 USD.

1966 Corvette Coupe offered by Fred and Terry Michaelis

Over 500 Corvettes are expected to be offered at this year’s Bloomington Gold Auction which gets underway this afternoon. While many collectors consign a number of Corvettes to the country’s largest Corvette-only auction, this year’s event has a special collection of 42 Corvettes that have been hand-picked from the personal collection of Fred and Terry Michaelis of Proteam Corvette fame.

Many of these Corvettes are already Bloomtington Gold certified and represent the best of the best. These low mile, high horsepower and unique-optioned Corvettes will be offered over the two day event. After the jump are some of our favorites.

1966 Corvette Coupe offered by Fred and Terry MichaelisAnyone reading this blog for any length of time knows that I’m a sucker for Black Corvettes. And honestly, what could be better than this 1966 427/425 hp Tuxedo Black Coupe? With just 27,725 miles on the odometer and a super rare unique interior color combination of a Bright Blue dash and carpet with white leather seats, this Corvette offers the buyer the complete trifecta mentioned above. Other options include the M-21 4-speed transmission, F-41 special heavy duty brakes and full documentation includeing the warranty book and Protect-O-Plate. The selling time for this midyear coupe is Saturday at 2:10 pm.

1953 Corvette #93 offered by Fred and Terry MichaelisLast year we saw a run on 1953 Corvettes with eight being sold at public auctions throughout the Country with average prices of just under $320,000. Terry and Fred are bringing one of the finest 1953 Corvettes to Bloomington this year which will give us a chance to see if the market is still hot for the first year Corvette. This 1953 is VIN #93 and is considered one of the best 1953′s in the World. Like all 1953 Corvettes, this one is Polo White with Sportsman Red interior, has the Blue Flame straight-six powerplant coupled to a Powerglide transmission. Other options include the Wonderbar radiom, E-brake warning light, windshield washers and Courtesy Lights. This 1953 is nationally known with multiple NCRS Top Flught awards and a NCRS Duntov Mark of Excellence Award in 2005. This Corvette is expected to sell at 3:00 pm on Saturday.

1959 Resto-Rod Corvette offered by Fred and Terry MichaelisWith Proteam’s reputation for high quality original Corvettes, its kinda interesting to find a resto-rod in Fred and Terry’s collection. But like all restor-rod Corvette lovers, they were probably intriqued with having a Corvette that combined with the early model classic looks with late model Chevy performance. This resto-rod was built utilizising a 1959 Corvette Convertible body on a special Paul Newman chassis that was built to hold 1994′s LT4 350 ci 300 hp engine and 6-speed transmission. Like the Grand Sports built in 1996, this Corvette has a Grand Sport Admiral Blue exterior and Black leather interior. All the comforts of late model Corvettes are built into this 1959 Corvette include air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, AM/FM stereo with CD changer and halibrand knock-off wheels. The Corvette comes with documenation of the build process and includes a matching gas powered Corvette go-cart. This resto-rod Corvette will be auctioned on Friday.

For a full list of Corvettes being offered at this year’s Bloomington Gold Auction, check out the Cars List at Mecum Auctions. Look for lots beginning with X to denote that the Corvette comes from the Fred and Terry Michaelis special collection.

We’ll have more coverage of the auction as well as results as soon as their offered.

2009 Corvette ZR1 on the Nürburgring

Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter has finally made public the much anticipated Nürburgring lap time by the 2009 Corvette ZR1. On the morning of Friday, June 27th, GM Development Engineer Jim Mero drove the 2009 Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4. The entire post from Tadge is after the jump.

I know many people have been very interested in how fast the ZR1 would be at the Ring…

Most car enthusiasts are quite familiar with the Nürburgring. Built in the 1920’s near Cologne, Germany, “the Ring” is considered to be the toughest and most challenging race track in the world.

Over the last two weeks, we have been doing our final tuning and testing there before we start ZR1 production cars. This morning (Friday June 27), General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove the Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4.

Jim commented after the lap that conditions were good except for a strong headwind down the main straight and that the lap was solid, but he felt there were a few places he could have gone faster.

The car was bone stock with the exception of the communications and safety equipment. The tires were production Michelin Pilot Sport 2’s. These tires have been developed specifically for the ZR1 and will have impressive wet traction and wear (tread wear rating = 220), in addition to excellent dry road holding. Chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs. Likewise, the engine calibrations were absolutely stock, emissions compliant and the car ran on pump (not racing) fuel. The vehicle was exactly like the cars that will be built in Bowling Green, Kentucky and sold around the world later this summer.

Despite posting one of the fastest times ever run by a production car, Nürburgring lap times were not an over-riding priority in the development of the ZR1. The truth is, if the only priority was speed at the ring, the car would not be very pleasant to drive on American roads. The ZR1 is an incredibly capable track machine, but unlike most ultra-high performance cars, it is very easy to live with on a daily basis.

The timed lap was run with a rolling start, a departure from our previous practice of standing starts. This is more aligned with current industry practice. The lap was electronically timed and confirmed with two hand-held stopwatches. An in-car video will be posted when the engineering team returns from Germany. Look for it the week of July 7!

The time falls in the range where most observers thought it would, and we are left to wonder what the outcome would have been if the Corvette ZR1 had been driven by Corvette Racing’s Jan Magnussen, who lapped the ‘ring in the Corvette Z06 with a time of 7:42.9. The ZR1′s 7:26.4 is faster than the Nissan GT-R’s time of 7:29.03 but 1.4 seconds behind the unofficial 7:25 run by the GT-R V-Spec.

As Tadge mentioned, a video of the run is forthcoming. In the meantime, this video was just posted by the guys at BridgetoGantry.com. Because Tadge doesn’t mention whether or not the ZR1 had the track to themselves, and the video shows another car on the track, we’re unsure if this clip is actually from this morning’s 7:26.4 run.

A complete list of Nürburgring lap times can be found at wikipedia.

The 2009 Corvette Z06 in Cyber Gray Metallic

I was trolling GM’s media site and came across these new photos of the 2009 Corvette Z06. The photos show the Corvette Z06 in the instantly recognizable 57U Cyber Gray Metallic exterior, one of two new colors for 2009. I say instantly recognizable as this was one of the colors that the Corvette ZR1 was photographed in for January’s ZR1 Media Press Kits. The introduction of the Corvette ZR1 has effectively sucked the air out of the room when it comes to discussion of the Corvette Z06, but the car is still a technological marvel with its 7.0 liter 505-hp LS7 v8 power plant.

The 2009 Corvette Z06 in Cyber Gray Metallic The 2009 Corvette Z06 in Cyber Gray Metallic Behind the Wheel of the 2009 Corvette Z06

As we mentioned earlier this week in 2009 Corvette Pricing post, there are several upgrades and enhancements for the 2009 Corvette Z06. They include:

  • New, “spider”-design 10-spoke Z06 wheel available in four versions: Sparkle Silver, Competition Gray and chrome
  • Color-keyed door and instrument panels with red and titanium interiors
  • Power-operated pull-down hatch now standard
  • Gray stitching on Ebony base seats (previously red)
  • New door sill plates with the Z06 logo
  • Acoustic package standard on all Z06 models
  • The Z06 also receives a larger-capacity dry-sump oiling system. It upgrades to the 10.5-quart (9.9 liters) system of the new ZR1. The previous oil system held eight quarts (7.5 liters).

So how well will this color sell? Our best comparison takes us back to the C5s Medium Spiral Gray Metallic offered on 2003-04 Corvettes. Spiral Gray was the 5th most popular color in 2003 and 6th most popular in 2004. However it wasn’t offered on the Z06 which may have limited its penetration.

The 2009 Corvette in Blade Silver Metallic

GM has released a batch of official photos of the 2009 Corvette in conjunction with the 2009 Corvette Pricing Schedule and we’re pleased to see its the new Blade Silver Metallic, RPO code 17U. Blade silver replaces the popular Machine Silver which graced Corvettes from 2004-2008. The differences between Blade Silver and Machine Silver are subtle, but distinct. In addition to the gallery showcasing the new color, I have put together a side by side comparison of the two silvers.

Comparision of Machine Silver vs Blade Silver 2009 Corvette in Blade Silver Metallic 2009 Corvette in Blade Silver Metallic

2009 Corvette in Blade Silver Metallic Behind the Wheel of the 2009 Corvette 2009 Corvette LS3 V8

Machine Silver has been one of the more popular Corvette colors usually ranking in the top half of Color production behind Black and the two Reds, so the change-over to the oh-so-similar Blade Silver Metallic shouldn’t cause any big changes in the palette for 2009.

[VIDEO] Corvette ZR1: Factory Assembly Process

by Keith Cornett on June 18, 2008

The 6.2L Supercharged Corvette ZR1

I received a text message yesterday from GMnext.com alerting me that a new video showcasing the assembly of a Corvette ZR1 was online. The video starts with the ZR1′s frame and follows the assembly process until the Corvette is completed and driven out to the back lot ready to be transported. One aspect of the video that I really enjoyed was hearing the comments made from the assembly plant workers who speak about the Corvette ZR1 with pride and enthusiasm.
