by Keith Cornett on March 30, 2009

1972 Corvette Roadster

JH in New York submitted this 1972 Corvette Roadster to Corvette Values:

1972 Corvette Roadster, VIN # 1Z67W2S517XXX. Matching numbers LS5 454 ci V8 with 270 horsepower, automatic transmission, 48,100 miles. Factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, tilt-telescopic steering column. Exterior is in good condition and painted Steel Cities Gray. The chrome bumpers are in excellent condition as well as the black leather interior. No documentation.

Find out how we valued this Corvette after the jump.

1972 Corvette Roadster 1972 Corvette Roadster 1972 Corvette Roadster

1972 Corvette Convertible, VIN # 1Z67W2S517XXX. The VIN indicates this Vette was built in April, 1972, the ninth month of the 1972 production period. This late production date indicates that any engineering changes or modifications were most likely included in this Corvette.

The mileage is reported to be 48,100 which is stated as original. This is quite a low number considering this Corvette was built 35 years ago.

This 1972 Convertible is powered by the original matching numbers 454-270 motor that is coupled with an automatic transmission. The 454 motor can be termed rare with only 14% of the buyers opting for this high performance motor option during the 1972 production.

The exterior is Steel Cities Gray in color and is combined with the Black leather optional interior. The paint and interior are both in good condition. The chrome bumpers are in excellent condition. It is equipped with several desirable options including power steering, power brakes, tilt-telescopic steering column and A/C.

In establishing an appraised value for this 1972 Corvette Convertible, many factors have been considered. First, the paint is unique and not a common color seen today despite the fact that 2,346 Corvettes were painted this color in 1972.

Second, the original matching numbers high performance motor was desirable. Adding to this Vette’s drivability was the addition of power steering and power brakes, the tilt and telescopic steering column as well as A/C. This is a nice combination of features.

Third, the original low mileage is a very positive factor in the value.

Taking all these factors into consideration, the appraised value of this 1972 Corvette Convertible is $35,800. Of further interest is the one-year appreciation factor of 5% in average price for this model Corvette.

n2a Motors Shows Off The Retro C6 Corvette Stinger

by Keith Cornett on March 28, 2009

The Retro C6 Stinger Corvette

Coachbuilder n2a Motors has been dabbling in rebodied Corvettes like the 789 and the Anteros, but we think their latest project dubbed the Stinger is right on! Still in development, n2a just released the latest renderings and model photos of the Stinger, which finds inspiration from the 1963-67 midyear Corvettes.

The n2a Stinger is based and built on the C6 Corvette platform, using the chassis and LS3 drive train. n2a Motors gives the C6 donor all new carbon composite body panels, custom interior, wheels and cat-back exhaust. The standard C6 Corvette Coupe with its 430-hp V8 is the base model and customers can have the treatment done to Z06 and ZR1s as well.

The Stinger pulls in different design elements from the midyear Corvette and puts them together in this attractive package. According to n2a (which stands for no 2 alike), the front end and hood scoop comes from the 1967 Corvette, the mid-section finds inspiration from the 1965 Corvette and the famous split-window 1963 gives the Stinger one of the most iconic rear window treatments in automotive history.

Although pricing details are still vague, n2a Motors says production of the Stinger is expected to begin October 1st. We’ll keep our eyes out for more of the Stinger…We think its a winner!

PRESS RELEASE:

n2a Motors announced today that it is accepting deposits on the Stinger, the latest model in their line of critically-acclaimed coachbuilt automobiles. Slated for January 2010 delivery, the Stinger is inspired by the 2nd generation 1963, ’65, and ’67 Corvette Sting Rays and is built atop the 2009/2010 C6 Corvette chassis.

The ’63-67 Corvettes are among the most revered, iconic, and beautiful cars in automotive history. The Stinger pays homage to the historic 2nd generation Corvette with a sleek, carbon-composite body featuring the front end and hood scoop from the 1967 Corvette, a mid-section reminiscent of a ’65 Corvette, and the famous split-window rear end of the ’63 Corvette, and has a level of performance and safety that engineers of the era could never have dreamed possible. Utilizing a new Corvette donor car, the Stinger achieves 0-60 in 4.3 seconds with a 430 hp/424 lb.-ft. torque LS3 V8 engine rated at 16 MPG city and 26 MPG highway. Since the chassis and safety equipment remain unmodified, GM’s 100,000 mile powertrain warranty remains completely intact and the Stinger can be serviced at any GM dealership.

n2a Motors starts by removing the donor Corvette’s body panels and installing the new carbon-composite Stinger body, a process that takes over 800 hours for n2a’s coachbuilding craftsmen to complete. The interior is entirely new with re-contoured leather seats, leather dash, wool carpeting, and leather-wrapped interior panels. Wheels and cat-back exhaust are removed and replaced with n2a’s custom-made components. The n2a moniker stands for “no two alike,” referring to n2a Motors’ policy of building unique vehicles for each customer. No two vehicles will be built with identical color combinations, ensuring that each customer receives a unique car customized to his or her tastes.

n2a Motors has reserved serial numbers 001,002, and 003 for ZR1-based Stingers. Featuring the 638-hp LS9 engine, the ZR1 is the fastest and most powerful Corvette ever produced. Stingers built on the ZR1 platform rocket from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 205+ mph. Serial numbers 004-010 are reserved for Z06-based Stingers, which are 505 hp with a 0-60 time of just 3.7 seconds. n2a Motors is accepting deposits to reserve a serial number and a place in the production order. Production is expected to commence October 1st.

The Stinger is n2a’s third model, following the successful 789 and Anteros models that debuted in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Both are built on the C6 Corvette platform and utilize carbon-composite bodies, a carry-over from n2a’s background in stealth technology prototyping for military contractors. About n2a Motors

n2a Motors was founded in 2004 to revive the art of American coachbuilding. The n2a moniker stands for “no two alike,” referring to n2a Motors’ policy of building unique vehicles for each customer. No two vehicles will be built with identical color combinations. Kanter Concepts, n2a’s parent company, produces concept cars for Detroit and foreign automakers and stealth technology prototypes for military contractors.

Corvettes on the track at Bondurant

I was surfing the different programs offered at Bondurant’s School of High Performance Driving and one that caught my eye that I wanted to share was their upcoming half-day Performance Driving Experience. The Performance Driving Experience allows you to get behind the wheel of the C6 Corvette, Cadillac CTS-V and the Bondurant ProKart for a variety of driving instruction on different road courses. Best of all, the cost for all this fun is only $500!

Here is what you can expect during the Performance Driving Experience:

The program starts with a lead and follow exercise with your instructor on the Bondurant road course. You will see first hand the proper racing line the pros drive and will learn to Know precisely where to brake, turn in and position your car for the fast way around the track.

You’ll also compete on Bondurant’s autocross for fastest time among the others in the event. Test your abilities to handle the car at its limits and learning to be smooth with the car will improve your lap times. The autocross and the lead/follow exercises prepare you for the race in the Bondurant ProKarts.

The evening wraps up with the ProKart Enduro – just like the endurance races of Daytona, Sebring and LeMans. Teams will be formed to compete in the hour long race driving Bondurant’s 50-mph ProKarts. Strategy will play into the final outcome of the event. Teams will have to decide which driver drives each leg of the race; practice driver changes; and work together to help the rest of the team learn the track and be quick.

If you’re interested in spending a half day learning from the same instructors who have worked with Johnny O’Connell, Jimmy Johnson and Dale Jr, then the Bondurant’s Performance Driving Experience is for you. There are only a few seats left for the May 2nd Experience, so visit Bondurant.com or call 1-800-842-RACE (7223).

[PICS] First Look: The 2009 Competition Sport Corvette

by Keith Cornett on March 23, 2009

The 2009 Competition Sport Corvette

Chevrolet loaned the ALMS Vitesse program this 2009 Competition Sport Corvette to serve as a track car during the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, giving hot laps to fans and enthusiasts (and bloggers!) as well as shuttling around track officials. We took these photos just prior to our own hot lap around the 3.7 mile track and we can tell you that this Corvette is a winner!

The #02 Competition Sport Corvette was just completed prior to the race but since this was to be used as a track car, the drive down to Florida from Bowling Green served to break-in the car prior to undertaking track duty. The #02 Corvette features the Blade Silver with Black stripes and one of my favorite touches, blacked-out headlights:

In addition to the #02 CSR Corvette Coupe, the #03 Competition Sport Corvette Z06 was also in Sebring at the Chevy display:

The Competition Sport package is aimed at owners who like to attend driving schools and track events. Available in Spring 2009, the Z51-equipped 1LT Corvette Coupe will retail for $55,655 while the 1LZ Corvette Z06 will cost $77,500.

My Hot Lap Around Sebring in a 2009 Competition Sport Corvette

Thanks to my new friends at Mobil 1, I was able to take a hot lap around Sebring International Raceway on the Friday prior to the 12 hour race. The new 2009 Competition Sport Corvette Coupe was doing duty as a Vitesse track car and the particular Corvette that I rode in was the #02 car in the series.

My ALMS Vitesse driver was Patty and she was very good out on the track. I asked her to give a shout out whenever we topped speeds of 100 mph and we hit that mark at least three times. I created two versions of the video. There is also a short version showing just the lap. The version below features a walk-around the Competition Sport Corvette, idle chatter with Pattie while waiting to get on the track, and then a trip to the Corvette Corral where we see Corvette team members Harlan Charles and Tadge Juechter.

The Competition Sport Corvette is available as either a LT1 Coupe or a 1LZ Z06. Also included in the Coupe package is the Z51 performance package, NPP performance exhaust, differential cooler, heads up display, red painted brake calipers and the Z06 spoiler. The numbers for the doors are the same as the series sequence number and like the GT1 Championship edition, the “Jake” mascot is embroidered on the seats, center console and also outside the car on the B-Pillar. The Competition Sport is available in three colors, Blade Silver or Black for the Z06, Blade Silver or Arctic White for the Coupe.

Again, I’d like very much to thank Mobil 1 who arranged the lap as well as showed me a great time at Sebring, my driver Patty of the ALMS Vitesse Program, and the folks at Corvette who built an incredible sports car.

2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

In commemorating the 10th anniversary of GT1 racing in the American LeMans Series, GM is producing 600 2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Editions and selected the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring as the appropriate place to debut the new cars to the public. On the Friday before the 12 hour race, GM’s Corvette team including Product Manager Harlan Charles and Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter were on hand along with the six drivers of Corvette Racing to introduce the limited edition “Jake” Corvettes.

The Corvette GT1 Championship cars shown in the video were the first six cars of the series built. Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter remarked that the Corvettes were just completed within the last week and were shipped down from Bowling Green. The six Corvette drivers picked up the keys of the Corvettes following an ALMS drivers meeting and drove them down to Corvette Racing’s paddock. A little later, the six Corvette Racing drivers drove them over to the Corvette Corral to be viewed by the enthusiasts gathered at the hospitality tent.

The GT1 Championship Editions are limited to just 600 units: 200 Coupe, 200 Convertible and 200 Z06. Each of these body styles will have 100 in Yellow/Black and 100 in Black/Yellow. The series also has its own specific VIN sequences: 300001 for the Velocity Yellows and 40001 for those in Black.

The GT1 Championship Edition features C6.R livery inspired graphics which feature the mascot “Jake” ghost-painted on the hood bulge, years of the championships and drivers flags. Also making the Corvettes unique are the ZR1 full width body color spoiler and chrome wheels. The coupes and convertibles include the Z51 Performance Package, NPP Performance exhaust and MX0 6-Speed Paddle Shift Automatics. The GT1 Corvette coupe also comes with the optional C2L Dual Roof package. All three GT1 models get the optional U3U Navigation Systems as well.

Inside the GT1 Corvettes you’ll find a custom leather wrapped ebony interior with exclusive yellow accent stitching, GT1 embroidery on the leather seats, instrument panel and center console armrest. Under the hood is a special engine cover with a carbon pattern and yellow Corvette lettering. A windshield banner is also included and is installed by the owner.

Pricing for the GT1 Championship Edition starts at $65,310 for the 4LT Coupe, $71,815 for the 4LT Convertible and $86,385 for the 3LZ Corvette Z06.

Corvette Racing: The GT1 Championship C6R Livery

One of the anticipations for each new racing season is when the Corvette Racing team rolls out the new livery. For 2009, Corvette Racing and GM close the marketing loop by running the two C6.Rs with the new GT1 Championship livery. Like the forthcoming limited edition GT1 Championship Coupes, Convertibles and Z06s, the new livery features the #3 C6.R in familiar Velocity Yellow with black striping while the #4 C6.R is reversed in Black with Yellow accents.

Over the years we’ve been treated to some great designs, from last year’s “Jack Scrape” to the Bad Boy “Jake” livery at Monterey in 2007. The 2009 GT1 Championship livery is a hit as a C6.R in Black is just about the most menacing-looking car on the track. The fact that you can buy a street version of these Corvettes makes the livery special as well. Only one other time as GM offered an ALMS C6.R replica, the 2007 Arctic White Ron Fellows Edition Z06.

Corvette Racing: The GT1 Championship C6R Livery 2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition 2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

As there are no other GT1 class entries, the 12 hour endurance race will be the ultimate practice session for this June’s assault on the 24 Hours of LeMans. But that doesn’t mean the two factions are going to take it easy on each other. Remember the door-banging-on-pit-row incident at Mid Ohio in 2008 anyone?

Speaking of racing, the Corvette C6.Rs were out on the track today in two practice sessions. #3′s Jan Magnussen holds the fastest time with a lap of 1:56.907 while #4′s Marcel Fassler ran just 0.162 seconds behind with a lap of 1:57.069.

The 2009 GT1 Championship Edition Corvettes will make their public debut on Friday at 1pm at the Corvette Paddock in Sebring. We’ll be there for the unveiling and hope to have plenty of video and pictures to share.

As part of our Sebring coverage, we’ll be taking a hot lap around Sebring Raceway in a Corvette and will be dropping in to hear what Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter has to say during his presentation. Make sure you visit Corvette Blogger throughout the weekend. You can also follow our updates on Twitter.com.

The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring is scheduled to start at 10:30 am EST on Saturday, March 21st. The race will be televised live on SPEED from 10 am to noon and from 2 to 11 pm Eastern.
