Corvettes

August 2009 Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on September 2, 2009

Corvette sales have sunk to their lowest point since the beginning of the automotive recession which started the second half of 2008. In August, GM delivered 746 Corvettes, down from 966 in July and -82% off the 4,242 Corvettes delivered in the same time period a year ago. For the calendar year (Jan-Aug) there have been 9,210 Corvettes delivered, a decline of -56.3% from 2008 sales of 21,066.

Corvette Ad Watch: 1961 Corvette Catalog Shoot

1961 Corvette Catalog Shoot

Former Chevy ad man Jim Bernadin gives us the details from this classic photo shoot for the 1961 Corvette Catalog Folder.

This is the cover of the Corvette Catalog Folder for 1961. It was shot at the GM Proving Grounds near Milford, Michigan. Shooting there was a real challenge because there was so much security involved. Arrangements to shoot there had to be made far in advance and approved by about a hundred people–or so it seamed. Each person to be there had to have been cleared in advance. There was always a wait when everybody arrived at the gate office and had to have their identity checked and approved once more. Then you had to have a special driver to get you around the facility. Only these guys knew all the regulations and could keep you from trouble. Your pre- selected location had to be cleared and closed to other traffic. Someone from Chevrolet had to be with you and responsible for all you did. You were not allowed to see into any of the other divisions buildings.

Our location was a good one in that it didn’t look like the proving grounds. It could have been almost any smaller road in America. The person standing with the camera is Warren Winstanley’s assistant. Warren was the photographer for this and all the other shots in the catalog. The two fellows in the car were models. The rear view was on the cover because it represented the newest thing about the Corvette. Not only was the styling new but there was a real trunk for the first time. The rear styling gave a good look at what the Stingray would be like in a couple of years but nobody knew that at the time. The car isn’t really moving but the illusion of some dust was created by throwing some cement powder at just the right time. I even helped with that on occasion. I had all the fake rally signs made back at our office along with the ’61 sign that eliminated the need for other cover copy. This and the picture to follow are often used in publications about Corvettes. I wish I could remember who wrote the copy–maybe Vic Olsen.

Australian 2009 Corvette ZR1 Gets Right Hand Drive

This 2009 Corvette ZR1 was imported into Australia and received a right hand drive conversion from the Corvette Clinic in Bundoora, Victoria. This is just the first of America’s King of the Hill to receive the RHD treatment which allows the cars to be fully registerable in all Australian states. According to the Corvette Clinic, two more Corvette ZR1s, a Victory Red and a Cyber Gray model, will soon get the conversion as well.

Converting a Corvette to right hand drive isn’t an easy task. The Corvette Clinic created a new dash and had to remanufacture some of the steering components to make it work. What I like about their ZR1 conversion is that they were also able to move the 6-Speed transmission shifter knob to the right side of the center console as well.

First Look: Arctic White 2010 Corvette ZR1

by Keith Cornett on August 25, 2009

Arctic White 2010 Corvette ZR1

You are looking at what could very well be the very first 2010 Corvette ZR1 finished in stunning Arctic White. Recent changes in production now allow all 2010 Corvette models to be available in all eight exterior colors. Although Arctic White has never been a big seller with last year’s production numbers topping just 5%, it seems to flow exceptionally well and the Blue Devil’s exposed LS9 cowl and blue brake calipers provide well-intended accents.

Chevrolet Releases 2010 Corvette Grand Sport Videos

Last Friday you may have seen a slew of online coverage from the auto blogs and magazines detailing “First Drive” reviews of the new 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. In addition to the third party reviews, the Corvette team has also made a smart move by producing a couple of online videos introducing the newest Corvette model as well as demonstrating Launch Control, the newest feature available on all Corvette models with manual transmissions.

Here are the two videos uploaded to Chevrolet’s YouTube account:

By releasing their own videos, the Corvette Team is assured that the introduction of the new Corvette and its (awesome) launch control feature could be shown in the way they wanted. The videos also broaden the audience by providing content to other web sites (ie CorvetteBlogger) that weren’t invited to the media test-drive, but would have been there had they been asked.

It also follows the promise of new GM Communications guru “Maximum” Bob Lutz to fully engage social media platforms to get the company’s message and their products past the traditional media gatekeepers and straight into the hands of the end consumer.

1970 Corvette Convertible with LT-1 V8

Prolific Corvette buyer and seller Terry Michaelis of Proteam recently listed these three highly collectible Corvettes on his blog tMichaelis Corvette Perspective. The three cars, a 1963 Corvette Coupe, a 1968 T-Top Corvette and a 1970 Converitible, would be coveted by any collector, yet Terry’s cars always seem to have that extra bit of provenance that pushes them to the top.

1963 Corvette Sting Ray Sport Coupe

1053A..1963 Corvette Split Window Coupe, 327-360 hp, (fuelie), 4 speed, numbers match (appears to be the real deal) and has the factory original body/trim tag. Sebring Silver paint with Black interior. Body-off restored in show condition with a GM OEM body. NCRS certified in June 2009. Motor, transmission, and rear end numbers are all matching, sequential, and appear to be the real deal. This is as good as I have seen for quite some time (TM). Optioned with T-10 transmission, 3.36 posi, Wonderbar radio, fuel injection, aluminized exhaust, hubcaps, and white stripe radials. Most all factory correct type components including the spare, jack, jack tools, seat belts, washer system, tar top battery, shifter, shielding, air cleaner, alternator, idler pulley, F.I. unit, F.I. fuel filter, exhaust heat shields, roller gas door assembly, long base mirror, glove box door, cookie tin hood, owners manual, sales brochure, and T-3 headlights. Documented with the NCRS certificate, ribbon, judging sheets, restoration photos, and owner history. From past owner of 29 years. Looks, runs, and drives excellent. CC:1 $169,000.00

1968 Corvette T-Top Pilot Line Car (#15)

203X..1968 Corvette T-Top Pilot Line Car (#15), 327-300 hp, automatic, numbers match, (appears to be “The Real Deal”), 58,480 actual miles. Lemans Blue paint with Bright Blue interior. Body-off restored with newer paint, interior, exhaust, brakes, and tires. This preproduction/Pilot “escapee” car was built in 1967 with many early (April/May 1967) major components as the launch of the coupe was delayed until February 1968 (around VIN #10,000). This car is full of handmade parts and probably spent the first six months of its life at the Milford proving grounds doing body development duty. (author: John Hinckley) – - – WOW!!!??? Optioned with factory side exhaust, power steering, power brakes, telescopic, shoulder harness, posi, SS brakes, AM/FM radio, tinted windshield, rallys, and raised white lettered radials. Most all factory correct type components including the spare, seat belts, washer system, shifter, shielding, and air cleaner. Documented with restoration photos. From past owner of 24 years. This super rare early preproduction pilot line car is the fifteenth (15th) C-3 (1968 to 1982) ever built!!!! This is an important part of Corvette history as the 1968 launch was the ugliest of them all and is why Zora was brought back to Corvette for 1969 to steer the ship. Looks, runs, and drives excellent. CC:+2 $50,000.00 This is serial # fifteen (15)

1964 Corvette Stolen During Woodward Dream Cruise

by Keith Cornett on August 19, 2009

1964 Corvette Stolen During Woodward Dream Cruise

For the second straight year, a classic midyear Corvette was stolen while its owner enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Woodward Dream Cruise in Birmingham, Michigan. It was just last year that an $80,000 dark blue 1966 Convertible was stolen following the famous cruise. This year, Birmingham Police are investigating the theft of a Riverside Red 1964 Corvette Convertible stolen Saturday morning.

According to police, the owner had parked the Corvette around 10:30 am on Ruffner Avenue off Woodward Avenue between 14 and 15 Mile Roads and walked away, leaving the convertible top down. The Corvette was missing when he returned about 20 minutes later.

The Corvette was registered in Ontario and had a license plate that read 6T4VET. Although Police report multiple sightings of the red Convertible Corvette on the expressway, no credible leads have turned up.

The

Mecum is still the middle of their Monterey auction but once we saw the 1967 Corvette Coupe equipped with the 1 of 16 L89 aluminum heads on the 427/435 hp V8 sell for $205,000, we’re proclaiming that the deal of the year. Known as the “Ed Cole” Corvette, the car was ordered in 1967 by the neighbor of GM’s General Manager Ed Cole who recommended the rare L89 option.

Ed Cole took care of his neighbor by outfitting the Corvette for the ultimate driving experience. In addition to the L71 427/435 V8 with the L89 heads, the Corvette was also optioned with finned wheels, F41 suspension and a 3.55 positraction rear end. The result was a final price of nearly $6,500.

When the car was delivered to Frank Driver Chevrolet in Wilmington Delaware, employees recall that it was accompanied by more special handling instructions than anyone had seen previously, all of them directly from Ed Cole.

The Cole Corvette most recently appeared at the Bloomington Gold auction just two months ago where it was bid up to $550,000 but failed to sell as the reserve was reportedly $1 million. At the end of the Corvette’s auction at Monterey, the ring announcer called the reserve was off and mentioned that it was also set at $1 million.

Because of the huge difference in the numbers and especially the difference between Bloomington’s high bid and the sale price at Monterey, we have to guess that this was a distress sale. We have no word yet who the buyer was.

The Corvette has been restored to Concours condition and comes with a ton of documentation including copies of the paperwork and the Protect-O-Plate. Also included is a letter from 1982 from the original owner answering a questionnaire about the Corvette.

Read the entire auction catalog entry about the history of the 1967 L89 Coupe known as the Ed Cole Corvette.
