For many collectors, the L71 powered 1967 Corvette convertible is the must-have Corvette to own. With 435 horses under the hood, the 1967 Corvette is considered the pinnacle of classic Chevy performance. But the discriminating buyers at Monterey won’t accept just any 1967 Corvette so Russo and Steel is obliging by offering this 1967 Corvette Convertible “Survivor” at its 10th Anniversary Monterey auction at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Monterey. Like the old saying goes, “It’s only original once!”.
Autoweek, through its sister publication Automotive News, included some future product news for Chevrolet in yesterday’s News Brake which includes a couple nuggets on the C7 Corvette. The podcast tells us nothing new and I’m having flashbacks to Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter’s rant back in April when he called out the automotive magazines for making up stories which contain pure speculation and no facts to support the argument. Now that I’ve set the table, let’s see what Autoweek is serving.
According to the UK car site Autocar, the mid-engine Corvette project is back online. That is if you believe an unnamed source from Saab engineering. Talk of mid-engined Corvettes have been around since 1960′s CERV-I so its no surprise that the rumor is back now that General Motors has moved beyond last year’s financial difficulties. As easy as it would be to discount the story, and some blogs have, there may be some truth based on what we know from the GM-UAW Strike of 2007.
Fitting nicely into our recent theme of green Corvettes comes this video from somewhere in Europe featuring a Corvette Z06 powered by natural gas. The oval track was measured at 400 feet in circumference and our hero in the lime-green Z06 drifted 25 complete rotations for a total of 9,925 feet. The previous record is mentioned in the video at 6,285 feet.
Next up in our Countdown to Monterey series is this 1953 Corvette Roadster from the estate of noted collector John O’Quinn. O’Quinn died in a traffic accident and RM Auctions has been charged with liquidating much of his collection which includes several unique and rare Corvettes. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a quality first year Corvette at an auction, but RM Auctions is sure to have a winner with Lot #239, this stunning 1953 Corvette Roadster #199.

The Highway Loss Data Institute’s recent report about insurance claims for theft during 2007-09 includes the Corvette Z06 on its list. So are Corvettes and particularly the lower production, high performance Corvette Z06 stolen that often to make the HLDI’s “Most Stolen List”? The surprising answer is no.
GM released the sales figures for July this morning and for the first time since 2006, we have two consecutive months of growth in Corvette sales. While June 2010′s sales increase was a paltry 0.6%, July 2010 showed better results with a 19.5% sales increase over July 2009′s sales. Last month 1,199 Corvettes were delivered, 233 more than July 2009′s Corvette sales. For the calendar year to date, sales are 7,554 Corvettes delivered which is now just -10.8% off the 8,464 Corvettes delivered during the same time period last year.
Last time we were on the subject of Corvettes painted green, we were talking Dark Bowling Green Metallic and the color similar to that which was featured on the Allstate 400 Corvette Grand Sport that ran at the Brickyard a couple weekends ago. Well, today we’re going to take you the opposite direction with a color so green, you’ll either love it or hate it. Here is a custom 2010 Corvette Grand Sport offered for sale by Colorado Chevy Dealer Purifoy which borrows the limited edition Synergy Green from Camaro and gets all crazy with it. You think that exterior is bold, when you see Jake embroidered on the seats, you’ll be green with envy.

First up in our Countdown to Monterey series is Lot #S125 from the Mecum at Monterey auction. This 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible features the 427/430 hp tri-power L88 engine and is documented to be the very first RPO L88 built. In 1965, Zora Arkus-Duntov’s Engineering group began developing the new 427 Mark IV engine for use in the Corvette as a full-bore endurance racing engine, and in 1967 their work came to fruition in the form of the RPO L88 option package.
