2011 NCRS National Convention Invades the Motor City

The National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) held its 2011 National Convention last week in Novi, Michigan just outside of Detroit. Hundreds of families from around the world converged on the Motor City suburb to look at, talk about, judge, and drool over pristine examples of America’s sports car. In addition to the seminars and judging events at the Suburban Collection Showplace, attendees could attend a number of tours of local attractions including visits to several GM facilities in the area. [PICS] 2011 Brickyard 400 Grand Sport Corvette Festival Car

Since the first race at the Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway in 1994, the Brickyard 400 has grown into one of NASCAR’s biggest events. For the five years, Corvette has led the pack as the pace car including last year’s race that was paced by the Bowling Green Metallic Grand Sport. This year’s Pace Car will be announced tomorrow at a special event, but we did find Corvettes and Camaros serving at “Festival Cars” which are the vehicles driven by track officials and other luminaries.

[VIDEO] LMR Tests Their Texas Mile Twin Turbo Corvette in GM's Wind Tunnel

Back in May, Late Model Racecraft’s twin-turbo Corvette set the standing mile record at the Texas Mile with a run of 231 mph. The team obviously feels they can get more out of their Corvette so they took the car up to Detroit where it was put in GM’s famous wind tunnel for aero testing.

Rick Hendrick's New Corvettes

NASCAR Team owner and Chevy dealer Rick Hendrick visited the National Corvette Museum yesterday to pick up several of the new Corvettes he purchased from GM through various Barrett-Jackson auctions. He also brought two vintage Corvette racers from his personal collection to show off as well. Several of the cars he picked up were unique 1 of 1 Corvettes including one that was news to us.

Final 2011 Corvette Production Statistics

It’s one of our favorite times of the year as GM releases the final production statistics for the 2011 model year. As we told you at the beginning of the month, GM’s wrapped up production of the 2011 Corvette in June and the final count for all Corvettes produced in the 2011 model year was 13,596. That was an 11.5% increase over the 12,194 Corvettes sold during the 2010 model year.

Grand Sport Corvette Destroyed in Lodi DUI Crash

A woman suspected of driving her Corvette under the influence caused a major accident in Lodi, California over the weekend. In the early morning hours of July 17, the unidentified woman was driving a 2011 Velocity Yellow Corvette Grand Sport Convertible at over 90 miles per hour when she broadsided a 1994 Pontiac Bonneville at the intersection of Lower Sacramento Road and Kettleman Lane/Highway 12.

It seems our new favorite tuners in Houston have a thing for LS9 crate motors. We featured Fastlane last week as wicked photos of a Chevy Silverado with an LS9 surfaced on their facebook page. Now we’ve got some photos of another LS9 install, this one more appropriate as the supercharged 6.2 liter V8 finds a new home in a classic 1971 Corvette.

Monday Morning Burnout: 1965 Corvette Coupe at the Strip

We’re starting this week off with a burnout featuring a 1965 Corvette Coupe on a dragstrip in the Estonian city of Haapsalu. It’s obvious that this Corvette made an impression as we counted no less than four different youtube video of the coupe laying down rubber and launching down the strip for its quarter mile run. We don’t know the times that were put down, but the Christmas tree tells us the Sting Ray is the winner.

The crew from Mecum Auctions rolls into the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, IA this weekend for a 2 day event. As of this writing, over 230 cars were listed on the docket. Roughly 10% of those are Corvettes. Discovery’s HD Theater will provide 4 hours of live coverage each day from the event. Checkout some of our faves being offered this weekend after the jump.
