One of the marquee events of the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals was the Class of 1971 invitational display. This gathering celebrates muscle cars that turned 40 years old this year. It’s not very often that we get to take an up close and personal look at a prototype Corvette. Most all of them are either crushed or destroyed during development by GM although a few of them have slipped out the door in the past. Mid America Motorworks brought three rare C5 prototypes to the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals last weekend in Chicago. We poured over them a couple of times throughout the weekend and you can too after the jump.

When it comes to the Corvette, custom looks can range from subtly menacing to downright gaudy. Fortunately companies like SS Vette fall firmly in the former category. As a result, even in this topsy-turvy economy, the company remains strong with an ever-expanding catalog of Vette parts and a presence at this year’s SEMA show.

Purchased from “Mr. Motion” Joel Rosen about 10 years ago, it recently completed a very lengthy, very thorough, and (we imagine) a very expensive restoration. It was unveiled for the very first time last weekend at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago by the current owner Dan McMichael, Joel Rosen, and Martyn Schorr. Another week, another round of rumors about the development of the next generation C7 Corvette. GM Inside News is saying that the C7 will be an evolution (not revolution) of design from the C6, and that we are to expect a more European-looking design. Not breaking news so far, they did say they were able to confirm that the split rear window will not be on the next-gen Corvette.
Meet Tom Norkiewicz, a GM Test Engineer who’s done this a time or two over the past 22 years. He’s picked up some crafty maneuvers along the way, all while seeing what a car’s made of. In this instance, it’s the Corvette – it’s safe to say he’s being thorough in his evaluations. At GM’s Desert Proving Ground in Yuma, AZ, it’s just another day on the job.
GM has released an update on the current production statistics of the 2012 Corvette through October 10th. From it we can gather some of the purchasing habits of new Corvette owners including models and colors as well as acceptance of certain options. The Grand Sport Corvette Coupe is the most popular model with 43% of all Corvettes produced and 23% of new Corvette owners picked Torch Red as their favorite color. Of special note is the new Centennial Corvette package which accounts for 17% of all new Corvettes produced so far.
