It didn’t quite reach the pre-auction expectations, but the third-oldest Corvette in existence still sold for a whopping $445,500 at the RM Auction in Arizona on Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. The car was predicted to sell for between $450,000 and $650,000 but fell short of those targets – though still one of the highest priced 1953 Corvettes ever sold.
Perhaps it’s only appropriate that a modern-day ZR1 Corvette engine would be placed in the original body style that started the ZR-1 (yes, with a hyphen back then) craze way back in 1970.
We first told you about this monster of a 1971 Corvette in July 2011, and now our friends at High Tech Corvette have put together a video that shows just what the modern LS9 ZR1 engine can do when planted in a 1971 Corvette. The LS9 even peeks out from under the hood through a clear opening that marks the C6 ZR1s.
The sun has barely set on all of the Arizona collector car auctions, but we’ve still got one more event to go before the 2012 calendar rolls over to February. Mecum’s monster 2,200 car Kissimmee, Florida auction begins Tuesday, January 24th at 11am and runs through Saturday, January 28th. Velocity will have 32 hours of live coverage starting on Wednesday the 25th.
At Saturday’s Russo and Steele auction in Scottsdale, a very special 1989 Bright Red Corvette was driven up on the block. With 26,412 Corvettes built during the 1989 model year, what could be so special about this particular Corvette that would give it a coveted Saturday evening auction slot? This ’89 Corvette Convertible was owned and driven by the Godfather of Corvette: Zora Arkus-Duntov.
It wasn’t easy combining the beauty of a 1963 Split Window with the mechanical prowess of a modern-day ZR1. But builder Anthony Luca managed to pull it off for car owner Joe Bongiorno – after more than 2,000 hours of work and much improvisation and deep thinking.
We tuned in to Saturday evening’s live stream of the Russo and Steele auction to catch some of rare Corvettes that were offered for sale. This 1968 L88 Corvette Roadster was one of the major attractions at the Scottsdale auction and it sure didn’t disappoint, selling for a cool $625,000. With the 10% buyer’s commission, price out the door was $687,500.
With much fanfare, the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition with the 60th Anniversary package drove up on the Barrett-Jackson auction block Saturday afternoon and was hammered sold for $600,000. Minutes later it was annouced that William Vannoy, the losing bidder in the auction, had also donated $100,000 to the sale to bring the total amount raised for charity to $700,000. Buying the rights to buy the VIN 001 2013 Corvette was Barrett-Jackson regular Ron Pratte.
Here’s a funny eBay ad aimed at classic Corvette restorers that is making the rounds this week. If you are looking to earn the maximum points possible when having your Corvette flight judged, then you shouldn’t overlook the air in those reproduction tires. Today on eBay, you can buy the original tire air from a 1967 L88 Corvette.
As time ticks down to the sale of the first 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible at Barrett-Jackson this Saturday, interested buyers and enthusiasts alike are able to get up close and personal with the new car which is set up at the Chevrolet display. Our friend Chris Draper was in Scottsdale yesterday to take in Barrett-Jackson and provides these pictures of the 60th Anniversary car on display along with a first-year 1953 Corvette.
