A long-time Corvette restorer and NCRS member, Troy Pyles, volunteered for the task of examining the three cars, with the goal of improving and ensuring the accuracy of the current handbook and adding any newly found details. He talked first with David Brigham, the 1953-55 Corvette Judging Leader, to seek out all the knowledge he has collected through the years, before heading on to Effingham, Ill.
Racing legend Bob Bondurant gets a sneak peek, in this minute-long video from the Austin American-Statesman, at the Circuit of the Americas track under construction near Austin.
“Look at the elevation changes right now,” Bondurant comments as he makes a reconnaissance lap of the 3.4-mile circuit track. “This is gonna be so cool.”
Mecum Auctions will be in Monterey, California this weekend for their annual August sale. The auction runs August 16-18 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course. Velocity will have 18 hours of live coverage of the auction. Nearly 60 Corvettes are scheduled to cross the block including a black 1968 L88 roadster, Mickey Thompson’s 1963 Z06, and a COPO 1967 convertible shown at the NY Auto Show.
We first told you about the Corvette-based SV 9 Competizione back in the summer of 2009. At that time there were plans to build as many as 1,000 of the custom coaches for just under $100,000 apiece. That was before SV Motors’ boss was indicted on investment fraud charges. It appears that just 4 of the carbon fiber-bodied cars were ever built. If you live up in Northwest Washington State, be on the lookout for a Nassau Blue 1965 Corvette Coupe and an all-original 1970 Chevelle SS that were stolen from a warehouse in Puyallup, south of Seattle. The two classic cars were owned by Gary Tucci and were stolen sometime last Wednesday night.

A dark red 1975 Corvette coupe was one of the victims of a six-garage fire during the night Tuesday in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago.
The police Bomb & Arson Unit is investigating the fire, but say no proof of arson has been uncovered yet.
The Corvette Racing program has really become the textbook case of how (and why) a car company goes racing. Not only does the Chevrolet Corvette benefit from the “Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday” strategy that Zora Duntov outlined nearly 60 years ago while making his case that Chevrolet needs to be a performance brand. Racing also provides a developmental role in validating the car and its individual systems. Those systems that can improve the performance of a car in a 24 hour race can just as well improve the performance of the production Corvette you’re driving on the street right now.
As we rapidly close in on the middle of August we also close on in the annual auction frenzy that takes place during Monterey Week. Over the next several days we’ll take a look at some of the unique Corvettes being offered next week in California. First up is the legendary Owens-Corning L88 Racer. The car, generally considered to be the most successful racing Corvette of all time, is being auctioned at RM’s Monterey sale on Friday, August 17th. In the summer of 1960 Corvette Racing won the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans for the very first time. Racing legend Briggs Cunningham fielded 3 white, fuel injected C1′s numbered 1, 2, and 3 in the annual endurance race. Cars #1 and #2 didn’t finish, but number 3 went on to win its class and finish 8th overall. We got a chance to catch up with that famous #3 at last weekend’s Concours d’Elegance of America in Plymouth. Michigan.
During the run-up to the sale of the 2009 Corvette ZR1, we saw many buyers turning to eBay to secure their chance to buy the 638-horsepower sports car. Both dealers and individual sellers jumped into the fray and we saw some outrageous auctions designed to play off the hype and “want factor” of those who wanted to be among the first to own.
That’s all well and good when the car is actually in production and for sale, but here is a case of an individual attempting to auction a 2014 C7 Corvette – the next generation Corvette that’s not expected to arrive at dealers for another year or so.
