50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray Concept

General Motors released a batch of new images of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Concept. In the press release, Chevy gives the Transformer’s movie car the official name of “50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray Concept”. The 50th Anniversary refers to the original Stingray racer built by Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov in 1959.

GM: Corvette will Go Hybrid If Necessary to Survive

In addition to yesterday’s news about the C7 Corvette’s design going retro with the inclusion of a split rear window, we also learned that GM won’t abandon its traditional V8 power plant unless necessary. But that doesn’t mean a hybrid Corvette is off the table. Tom Stephens, GM’s Vice Chairman of Global Product Development says “We will only do a hybrid if that is what is required to maintain the vehicle.”

As new CAFE standards require a company’s fleet to average 35.5 mpg by the 2016 model year, engineers already have some ideas on how to boost Corvette’s fuel efficiency, which is currently listed as 26 mpg highway for the 430 hp 2010 Corvette coupe. On the table is weight reduction, direct injection, variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. Electric power steering alone could add about 0.5 mpg.

The much discussed and maligned idea of powering a Corvette with a six-cylinder appears to be moot at the moment. Stephens says “I don’t believe that we need to do a six-cylinder engine in a Corvette at this time.”

Despite an apparent gap of nearly 10 mpg between today’s Corvette and the 2016 mileage standards, talk to most Corvette owners and they will tell you that they routinely see average 28-31 miles on the highway. Several tests of the Corvette’s fuel efficiency have been conducted that have confirmed such claims.

As for the Corvette going hybrid, Stephens says “I think we have a pretty good plan right now that probably will not require a hybrid in the near term.”

GM’s Welburn: Split-Window to Return on C7 Corvette

GM's Welburn: Split-Window to Return on C7 Corvette

GM’s VP of Global Design Ed Welburn told Inside Line that the design of the new C7 Corvette will go retro much like the new Camaro and a prominent design feature will be the return of the split rear window. The next generation Corvette is expected to be launched in 2012 as a 2013 model.

The original split window appeared on the 1963 Corvette Coupe, but Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov hated the feature due to its limited visibility and in 1964 it was removed. Welburn addresses the visibility issue by saying “With the back-up cameras and blind-spot detection systems that we have these days, the visibility issue is much less of a problem.”

The Corvette Stingray Concept that appeared in the latest Transformers movie also has a split rear window. “That car is not the next Corvette.” says Welburn, “But the split-window is something that I expect for the next Corvette.”

Welburn was the driving force behind the new reborn Camaro and is a big fan of the Corvette Stingray concept design as evidenced in this previously released Stingray Concept Introduction video.

As stated earlier, Inside Line says the C7 Corvette will have the traditional front-engine, rear drive layout.

We’d love to see the C7 go a bit retro as long as its performance capabilities remain high. May we suggest to Welburn that they take a look at the C3R Retro Stingray

Corvette Stingray Concept

Well, well. It seems that the Corvette Stingray Concept featured in Transformer’s Revenge of the Fallen is the gift that keeps on giving. The latest look comes from Los Jalopnik himself Ray Wert who was able to get inside the concept and then take it for a spin. In the process we learn a little more about chances for a repeat performance as the new C7 Corvette in 2012.

This concept is powered by a hybrid power train with electric power for in-city driving or switch to the V8 for high performance driving situations. Even with the V8 power, the engine will deliver even higher fuel economy with its ability to deactivate cylinders. Of course all this is conceptual but it shows how the power train teams are looking to the future.

Although the Stingray Concept is relatively new to the scene, it was actually penned six years ago by Tom Peters who followed it up by designing the new Camaro. That explains some of the similarities found on both cars, most notably the front-end defining egg crate grilles. Peters spoke with Wert about the Stingray and the C7 Corvette:

Said Peters, “it’s not the C7…that’s not to say there aren’t elements here that can translate into what the C7′s about. There’s no parameters to this concept…our goal…I would tell my team, guys, go kick that car’s ass. Go beat that.”

While that sounds like a definitive NO! on the “Stingray as C7″ debate, we’re still way early in the game to say that Kirk Bennion’s exterior design team won’t want to incorporate some of the defining lines and shapes found on the popular Transformers Concept.

We do hope they incorporate some of the technology featured inside the Corvette Stingray Concept. While most of it is described as currently available, some of the conceptual features are straight out of a science fiction movie. The instrument gauges feature 3D graphics and ambient lighting. In addition to the stereo and Nav unit, the central display also features a graphical PDA complete with “friend” pictures and connect to a home internet link to send out some tweets.

C7 Corvette Rendering

In a move to shore up public confidence following its stint in bankruptcy court, General Motors on Tuesday unveiled its 2-year product plan for the four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GM. Included in the Chevrolet news is that production of the C7 Corvette will start in April 2012 for the 2013 model year. GM also added that the Corvette will maintain the front-engine layout that has defined the sports car for 57 years.

This is great news as earlier estimates had pushed back the C7 through 2014. This also means that the Corvette Team will now have the resources and the corporate edict to move full speed ahead on a new design that could see changes to America’s sports car that include a smaller, lighter body, greater use of advanced weight-saving materials like carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium and perhaps a smaller engine but one that will still provide the power-to-weight ratio that Corvette owners have become accustomed to. Superchargers for everyone?

At the Birthday Bash earlier this year, Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter reassured the enthusiast gathering that the team is always thinking about the next generation Corvette and how to make it better. Now that the mid-engine layout has once again been tossed aside, Tadge’s engineering team will have essentially just a couple of years to make these engineering decisions and test them in mules which we could see as early as 2011.

As for the actual design of the car, prior this summer we believed the new C7 will again be more of a transition of the C6 body style. However, the public and Corvette enthusiasts were immediately smitten with the Transformer’s Corvette Stingray Concept introduced earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show. Perhaps the design team will see that owners would accept more of a radical departure from the looks of the C5/C6.

Walk Around the Transformer's Corvette Stingray Centennial Concept

This is a short but sweet forty second walk around the Corvette Stingray Concept featured in this summer’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie. The video appears to have been shot during production. For a brief instant I thought we’d finally get a look at the interior.

When the driver side door was opened, I was praying for that allusive interior shot. However, you can see the two-tone red/silver seats and it looks like the dash and steering wheel may be red as well.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson Discusses Corvette's Future

Autoweek.com sat down with new GM CEO Fritz Henderson and the Corvette’s future came up in the discussion. Fritz made it clear that the focus for Corvette is on the current C6 platform and making changes and upgrades to insure “it maintains its leadership position”.

When asked about the hold placed on the C7 development, Henderson commented that it would take a significant investment to have the car make another leap forward, but since the current architecture is so good, the plan for now is to make sure the current Corvette continues to improve every year.

I don’t know about you, but Henderson’s comments left me feeling very uninspired. Not just on the future development of the C7, but his discussion of the current C6 was very bland, almost clinical. Anyone else have that opinion?

The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring brought down several key members of Team Corvette to Florida who were on hand for the unveiling of the 2009 GT1 Championship Edition Corvettes. CorvetteBlogger spoke with Corvette Product Marketing Manager Harlan Charles about the people who build America’s sports car, the new GT1 Championship and Competition Sport Corvettes and the Transformers’ Corvette Stingray Concept and its potential influence on the C7 Corvette.

We appreciate Harlan taking the time to talk with us and we’re looking forward to attending the 2010 Corvette model rollout at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green at the end of April.

Callaway Corvettes at the 2009 Supercar Weekend

The 2009 Supercar Weekend was held along the waterfront in downtown West Palm Beach, Florida over January 24-27th. The gathering is billed as the largest supercar show in the world as collectors and enthusiasts showcase their modern and classic sportscars. Our friend Justin Society was there and provided us with a recap of the Corvettes that were in attendance.
