Torch Red Making a Return on the 2010 Corvette?

by Keith Cornett on February 5, 2009

Victory Red C6 (L) and a Torch Red C5 (R)

Chatter has been building over the last week about the possible return of Torch Red as a color option on the 2010 Corvette. Corvette Conti says Motown sources are telling him that Torch Red will be available as well as one other new color. Could that new color could be related to the expected return of the Grand Sport?

Conti thinks that one such color that could be used on the 2010 Grand Sport is Imperial Blue which was featured on the AllState 400 Corvette Z06 Pace Car in 2008.

What hasn’t really been discussed yet is which color(s) may be dropped to support the addition of two new colors. We are assuming that Victory Red would be retired with the return of Torch Red as opposed to dropping the darker shaded Crystal Red. However, with the Cadillac XLR being retired, it could open up additional capacity to Corvette to add another color without first discontinuing an existing color.

What ever the case, these kinds of tidbits are usually out on the table and confirmed by GM just prior to the C5/C6 Bash at the National Corvette Museum in April. We’ll be attending the show this year and you can count on us to bring you all the sites and sounds of the new 2010 Corvette as well as an update on the NCM’s expansion project.

January 2009 Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on February 3, 2009

GM released the first sales figures for the new year and for the first time since we started keeping track in 2006, Corvette deliveries dropped below 1,000 units to close at 842 for the month of January. Unfortunately for both GM and the assembly workers in Bowling Green, 842 Corvette sales does little to alleviate the supply of Corvettes on the ground and the slow sales could force the company to keep the factory’s doors closed longer than planned.

[PICS] C6 Corvette Char-Grilled in the Ukraine

by Keith Cornett on February 1, 2009

C6 Corvette Char-Grilled in the Ukraine

These photos come to us from English Russia showing the aftermath of a Corvette that burned while parked along a residential street in the Ukraine. Despite a police report that states that traces of arson were not detected at the scene, English Russia believes the car was burned because people “can’t stand those rich punks riding their hundred thousand dollar cars when around everything looks ruined and school teacher’s salary is $100/month.”

We’re hoping the Corvette C6 wasn’t burned as a result of class warfare. The site of the American-born sports car should lift up people up with visions of freedom and liberty – a shining 4-wheel version of the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately, due to huge European taxes and shipping, Corvettes can sell for double or even triple their costs in the States and so there is a certain resentment from the locals.

Hennessey Unleashes the 705hp Corvette ZR700

by Keith Cornett on January 30, 2009

Hennessey’s 705hp Corvette ZR700

For some the 2009 Corvette ZR1′s 638 horsepower is simply not enough. Hennessey Performance solves that problem with their latest creation, the Corvette ZR700. An extensive list of bolt-ons and a custom tune unleash the fury of the ZR1 by boosting horsepower to 705 and torque to 717lb-ft. The numbers are awe-inspiring.

Hennessey’s Corvette ZR700 rips through the quarter mile in 11.03 seconds at 136 mph. 0-60 mph was timed at 3.1 seconds and 0-150 mph was 13.9 seconds. The estimated top speed is 212 mph.

To squeeze the extra performance out of the Corvette ZR1′s LS9, Hennessey increases the supercharger boost from 11psi to 14psi and then adds a K&N air filter, stainless steel headers, high flow catalytic converters, upgrades the intercooler system and finishes up with a dyno test and tune session. Watch the Corvette ZR700′s quarter mile run at Lonestar Motorsports Park:

If the 705 hp ZR700 isn’t enough for you, Hennessey adds even more upgrades and goes into the engine with high flow cylinder heads and an agressive cam shaft that boosts horsepower to an astonishing 755.

2009 GT-1 Championship Edition Corvette

Tom Hill, Quality Engineering Manager at the Corvette Assembly Plant announced to NCRS members attending the Winter Regional meet in Kissimmee, Florida last weekend that a new limited edition package called the GT-1 Edition would be produced this Spring. Like the Competition Sport Package, the GT-1 Edition centers around the Corvette Racing theme with team mascot “Jake” prominently displayed.

The package will reportedly be available on Coupe, Convertible and Z06 models. They will include your choice of either 45U Velocity Yellow with Black Stripes or 41U Black with Yellow Stripes. Both colors feature the now familiar “Jake” mascot as well as other graphics inspired by the Corvette Racing C6.Rs like the distinctive yellow windshield banner.

Another unique feature will include graphics that will have the driver’s names on the roof just like the C6.R. The championships that the Corvette Racing C6.R team has won will be displayed on a lower door script graphic. Other features include black headlamps on the Velocity Yellow models and Genuine Corvette Accessories (GCA) body colored door handles and carbon fiber patterned engine covers.

All GT-1 Championship models include the ZR1′s full width spoiler in body color and Q9V Forged Chrome Wheels. The Coupe and Convertible models will come equipped with the Z51 Performance Package and NPP Performance Exhaust.

Each of the GT-1 Edition interiors will receive exclusive GT-1 embroidery on the seats and console lid. Ebony 4LT (Coupe and Convertible) and 3LZ (Z06) interiors and shifter will be accentuated with yellow stitching. Included will be a Special Console Trim Plate with specific VIN sequencing and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Pricing and availability are expected sometime in February.

With 2009 being the end of Corvette Racing’s reign of the GT-1 class in the ALMS and Le Mans, collectors and Corvette Racing fans alike will have the opportunity to show their support when driving this unique tribute to the C6.R team to a Corvette corral later this year and beyond.

2009 Corvette ZR1

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 was one of 10 performance cars to be nominated by an international panel of 59 journalists to win the coveted 2009 World Performance Car of the Year award. With its 638 hp supercharged V8 engine and a performance to dollar ratio unmatched anywhere, the ZR1 has catapulted the Corvette into the ranks of the top supercars.

The World Performance Car has been awarded since 2006 with previous winners being the Porsche Cayman S, the Audi RS4 and the Audi R8. The World Performance Car awards are held in conjunction with the World Car of the Year Awards. Of the twenty cars nominated to both lists, the Corvette ZR1 is the only car made in the United States.

2009 World Performance Car finalists:

  • Audi RS 6 Avant
  • BMW 135i Coupe / Cabriolet
  • Corvette ZR1
  • Lamborghini LP560-4 Gallardo
  • Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG
  • Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG
  • Mitsubishi Evo X / Evo MR
  • Nissan GT-R
  • Porsche 911 Carrera
  • Subaru Impreza WRX STI

The cars are chosen by a select international panel of 59 journalists who first select the top 10 vehicles, and then narrow the list to just three. The final winner is chosen from three that make the final cut.

Rumor: 2010 Corvette to Include a Grand Sport Widebody?

by Keith Cornett on January 21, 2009

1996 Corvette Grand Sport

Update: The Corvette Grand Sport was introduced on April 24, 2009 at the National Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash. We have updates which include:

Exclusive Photo Gallery: 2010 Corvette Grand Sport
[VIDEO] Introduction and Reveal of the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport

Talk of “Change” is in the air, but luckily our focus is on Corvettes and what may be coming our way in 2010. A CorvetteForum member was perusing the GM computer system and claims he saw a Grand Sport option for both Coupes and Convertibles in 2010. The RPO Z16, used in 1996 to describe the Grand Sport package was also mentioned. However, something else is afoot, as we are seeing how just one word is causing the Corvette enthusiast community to swoon: widebody.

A widebody describes the Corvette Z06′s increased width over the Coupe and Convertible models due to the flared front and rear fender panels that house the larger Z06’s wheels and brakes. A Widebody conversion, especially the rear portion which when done by itself is referred to as a “widebooty, is one of the more popular C6 Corvette body modifications which can cost upwards of $10-$15K.

The last few special editions rolled out by GM have been nothing more than special paint schemes and embroidered seats, no doubt conceived by marketing types to sell more Corvettes. Normally, we are okay with that but some special edition Corvettes require a little something extra to make them special. As in the case of the coming 2009 Competition Sport Corvette, is it more of a performance model over that of a regular Coupe because it comes with a user-affixible numbers to paste on the doors?

A Grand Sport widebody on the other hand changes the game. A unique body style would make the Corvette special. Add some goodies like the Z06’s brakes and then wrap it up in the Grand Sport livery with special paint and interior trim and you’ve got a guaranteed winner.

Like any rumor, those that know aren’t talking and those that don’t anything are talking too much. Watching the chatter over the next couple months will be interesting and it gives us something to look forward to. Hopefully as we get closer to the Corvette Bash in April we will start to get some solid news that will surely please the enthusiast community: The return of the Grand Sport Corvette.
