[VIDEO] New Corvette Pace Cars Hit The Indy 500

by Keith Cornett on April 23, 2008

Running the Brickyard in a 2008 Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car

“Welcome to the adult version of Christmas.” That’s what one speaker calls the day when the keys to all those Indy 500 festival cars are passed out. IGotShotgun was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 500 Festival Committee Meeting which culminates in members receiving the keys to their very own 2008 Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car and then taking them for some laps around the speedway.

We counted at least 50 of the 30th Anniversary Indy 500 Corvette Pace Cars and to see them lined up on the fabled brickyard is something special. The E85 Concept Corvette Z06 was also at the track showing what it can do.

Some of the dignitaries went for a hot lap with 2-time 500 Winner and this year’s official pace car driver Emerson Fittipaldi or Corvette Racing’s Max Papis. In this next video, “Mad Max” Papis takes IGotShotgun for a 180 mph hot lap around the 2.5 mile oval.

Festival members have use of the Corvette through the month of May and then the cars are sent to various dealers where they will be sold as official Indianapolis 500 Festival cars.

30th Anniversary Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car

Late last year with much fanfare, Chevrolet announced that for the first time ever two Corvettes would be pacing the Indianapolis 500. One of the Corvettes is the customized Z06 E85 Concept highlighting GM’s Green Initiative and will showcase the ability of the automaker to run even the Corvette on E85 Ethanol. But it was the second Corvette that is even more interesting in our opinion as it marked the 30th Anniversary of the 1978 Corvette Pace Car and would be commemorated by a special run of 500 Pace Car Replicas.

With only 500 of these special editions available, you would think that these Indy Pace Car replicas would be in demand and sell fast, but from the conversations we’ve had with several high-volume Corvette dealers, that just doesn’t appear to be the case. Here is what we’ve been hearing as the major roadblocks to sales of the 30th Anniversary Corvette Pace Car and why we think owning this special edition is a smart investment.

Dealers may be bypassing this year’s Corvette Pace Car replica because last year model didn’t sell well. Many point to the late entry of the replica into the 2007 production model run. The 2007 Corvette Pace Car Replica didn’t hit the lots until June, well after the running of the Indianapolis 500. We also believe that demand for last year’s Pace Car was tempered by news of the 2008 Corvette models which featured a new, more powerful engine and interior upgrades. As a matter a fact, that news is attributed to an overall decline in sales of all 2007 Corvettes.

Last year, Chevrolet offered two special edition Corvettes at the same time, the Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Championship Z06 and a Indy 500 Corvette Pace Car replica. Buyers overwhelmingly gravitated to the Ron Fellows Z06 Signature Edition. This year, Chevrolet again offered two special edition Corvettes at the same time: The 427 Limited Edition Corvette Z06 and the 30th Anniversary Corvette Indy Pace Car Replica and guess what? Buyers again gravitated first to the Z06.

So why is the 30th Anniversary Corvette Indy Pace Car Replica a smart buy? The first is economics. No, I’m not saying buy this car and you’ll make money on it. But you will lose less money because of its limited production of only 500 cars. Recent history shows the depreciation of the Corvette Pace Cars will be less than an average coupe or convertible Corvette and will generally start appreciating first and faster than their regular production counterparts.

1998 Indy 500 Corvette Pace CarTake a look at the 1998 Corvette Indy Pace Car. 1,158 of the Purple and Yellow Corvettes were produced. It’s 10 years old now and the five year depreciation number for the Pace Car replica is -19%. However, the 1998 Corvette Coupe’s five year depreciation is -26% while the 1998 Corvette convertible was down -29% over five years.

1995 Indy 500 Corvette Pace CarThe news is even better for the 1995 Corvette Pace Car. Only 527 of these Corvettes were built and over the last five years, the Pace Car has appreciated 19% while the regular production Coupe was down -7% and the roadster was down -12% over the same time frame. The Pace Car’s appreciation is even higher than the 1995 ZR-1 which shows an 8% increase.

The second reason we like this year’s Pace Car replica is that it’s offered in either a Coupe or Convertible model, and the option choices will all but guarantee that there will be some interesting combinations when its all said and done. We already know that there are no major changes for next year’s Corvette model so that hurdle has been removed. And forget the “All Corvettes are Red” mantra. The Indy 500 Pace Car is finally back in black, the number one selling Corvette color.

Lastly, the Pace Car is signed and numbered by 2-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi, making this Corvette only the third model in the car’s 55 year history to feature a signature. We’re still hoping that in the future this honor is reserved only for those who’ve had a direct impact on the Corvette and the enthusiast community.

So the final question you should be asking is where can I get one? We suggest getting in touch with Dave Salvatore at Kerbeck Corvette who told us they have several available. Dave can be reached at 1-877-537-2325 . Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Jim “Z” of Spitzer Chevrolet who was kind enough to answer our inquiries for this story.

Corvette Z06 Black Edition by Geigercars

by Keith Cornett on April 19, 2008

GeigerCars Corvette Z06 Black Edition

German-based Geigercars was already well known in Corvette tuner circles for their performance engine enhancements and wide body kits. So when they turned their attention to the Corvette Z06, something special was bound to happen. GeigerCars calls it the Corvette Z06 Black Edition.

The Corvette Z06 is already ahighly tuned machine with 505 horses available for the driver. GeigerCars managed to up the performance of the LS7 7.0L V8 to a whopping 592 horsepower. And then there’s the body. The Z06 Black Edition matches the car’s sinister performance with a blacked out body. Very intimidating. The only trace of color comes from the red brake calipers behind the black 5 Spoke Corvette rims. The rear fascia has been redesigned and features a set of smaller diameter taillights that remind us of a Ferrari. And while its different than a stock Z06, we’re okay with it.

New Paint Chips Revealed for 2009 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on April 13, 2008

New 2009 Corvette Paint Chips

As we get closer to the unveiling of the 2009 Corvettes at the Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash later this month, we’re learning more about the changes – both deletions and additions – that will accompany next year’s Corvette model. CorvetteConti.com has posted an image showing the two new exterior colors: Cyber Grey Metallic which we all know from December’s unveiling of the Corvette ZR1, and Blade Silver which will replace the popular Machine Silver. The other colors shown are not Corvette colors, but check out that Summer Yellow and tell me it doesn’t remind you of War Bonnet Yellow.

Many might not realize but Machine Silver was the third most popular color on the 2007 Corvette, following only Black and Victory Red as the exterior color of choice. In fact, since its inception on the last of the C5 Corvettes in 2004, Machine Silver has consistently ranked as one of the top colors with each model year, besting fan favorites LeMans Blue and Velocity Yellow. Machine Silver has been listed as a production constraint over the last few weeks and is now officially discontinued.

The new color, Blade Silver (RPO Code 17U) appears to be slightly darker than Machine Silver based on the chip, but we all know that to judge a color correctly, it must be seen on the car and outdoors.

The two new colors are available on all four 2009 Corvette Models: Coupe, Convertible, Z06 and ZR1.

We’ll have more on what’s new with the 2009 Corvette in the coming days. In the meantime, you can download the 65 page 2009 Corvette Ordering Guide.

Spied: 2009 Corvette ZR1 Running the ‘Ring

by Keith Cornett on April 9, 2008

2009 Corvette ZR1 on the Nürburgring

It’s been a while since we used the word “Spied” and “ZR1″ in a headline, but that is exactly what was caught on the Nordschleife portion of the Nürburgring in Germany last week. BridgeToGantry.com photographed the Blue Devil sporting a most interesting exterior color as it put its 620 horses to ground on one of the most famous road courses in the world.

Edmunds.com has an exclusive video of the Corvette ZR1 at Nürburgring. The report is that ZR1 is turning laps in the low “1:40s” (Don’t they mean 7:40s?) and times should improve as the track conditions have been a bit on the damp side.

2009 Corvette ZR1 on the Nürburgring

GM has an “Any Time Any Where” mentality when it comes to running the Corvette ZR1 on public tracks, having shocked the auto world back in October with a couple of hotlaps around Laguna Seca. Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter boasts the ZR1 will beat the track record for production cars at any road course in the world. It’s no doubt that the ZR1 has something to prove – can she compete with the fastest production cars to lap the ‘ring? Corvette Racing’s Jan Magnussen lapped the track in a Corvette Z06 back in 2005 with a time of 7:42.9. Nissan GT-R claimed a best lap time of 7:38.54 back in September 2007 while a Porsche Carrera GT lapped the ‘ring back in 2004 with a time of 7:28.

This story is about to go global with ramifications from Nürburg to Detroit and points in between. As official lap times are released, CorvetteBlogger.com will have them here for you.

Europe's Special Edition Corvette: The Competition

GM is unleashing another special edition built exclusively for the European Continent. The Corvette Competition is purpose-built to win both hearts and races for those enthusiasts living “across the pond.” Celebrating Corvette’s racing heritage, the Competition makes the most of the LS3′s 437 horses through maximizing Corvette’s superior power to weight ratio by keeping extras to a minimum. The Corvette Competition isn’t just a trim package like last year’s Victory Edition. It comes standard with an upgraded Z51 performance package, a Z06 rear spoiler and competition grey wheels. The Competition Corvette will be available only in Black and production will be limited.

The Corvette Competition delivers standard features like:

  • A precise 6-speed gearbox with a direct operating gear lever
  • Standard Z51 Performance Package with upgraded torsion bars, brakes and Eagle F1 Run Flat tires
  • Brake cooling ducts for the cross-drilled brake rotors
  • Active Handling System with a Competitive mode for advanced drivers
  • Z06 rear spoiler for improved downforce and high speed stability
  • Design touches that include front and rear sport mesh grilles, a carbon fiber central console, leather seats and Competition grey aluminum wheels

[VIDEO] Take a Lap of Sebring in a 2008 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on March 18, 2008

IGotShotgun gets a hot lap in a 2008 Corvette Coupe with Team Corvette Member Jason Altsman at last week’s 12 Hours of Sebring. Jason takes us turn by turn, 17 in all, through the historic 3.7 mile road course as he describes both the layout of the raceway and how the Corvette C6.Rs will perform at the various turns and straight-aways.

2007 Corvette Convertible

Avis Car Rentals has announced they will offering the 2008 Corvette Convertible as part of their “Cool Cars” fleet. Avis’ Cool Cars are a series of popular high-end vehicles which include the Cadillac CTS, Hummer H3 and Saab Convertible. The Corvette is already in the system and can be rented with guaranteed reservations at select Avis locations in Arizona, California, Florida and Las Vegas.

“Many Avis renters say that, given the opportunity, they would choose to rent an Avis Cool Car as a special treat for themselves,” said Becky Alseth, senior vice president of marketing for Avis Budget Group, Inc., parent company of Avis. “The fabled Corvette is a dream car for many people. Adding it to our Cool Car Collection gives our customers a chance to enjoy the ultimate experience of getting behind the wheel of this one-of-a-kind ride. It’s just another way that ‘We Try Harder’ to help make Avis your ‘other car.’”

I hit Avis.com for more info and immediately saw a yellow Corvette Z06 on the site. But the press release specifically says Corvette Convertible so I entered a couple of dates and was presented with a red convertible Corvette. I had seen accounts that said Corvette rentals would start around $165 but in reviewing the website and plugging in some dates, I was presented with a one day rental cost in Tampa at a stiff $299 without any discounts. When I plugged in some dates in May, my one day rental cost was $229.

Despite the steep price of admission, this is a great way to test drive a Corvette for a day and will allow more people the opportunity to get behind the wheel of America’s favorite sports car.

Fittipaldi Leaves Mark at the Corvette Assembly Plant

by Keith Cornett on March 11, 2008

30th Anniversary Corvette Pace Car

Emerson Fittipaldi was in Bowling Green to make his mark on the limited edition 2008 Corvette Indy Pace Cars. The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and driver of this year’s official Pace car is signing and numbering each of the 500 30th Anniversary pace car replicas.

That’s great news for those waiting to place their orders as Fittipaldi’s visit leads to the conclusion that GM has production well underway. We know from recent reports that the 2008 Corvette Pace Car has been entered into the dealer’s ordering system but as of last week there were 0 allocations.

The 30th Anniversary Pace Car will be available in both Coupe and Convertible configurations as well as your choice of a 6-speed manual or paddle shift automatic. Unlike last year’s limited edition Pace Car that was produced after the race, GM has promised these Corvettes will be ready for customers prior to the May 25th race day.

While Fittipaldi was in Bowling Green, he stopped in at the National Corvette Museum for lunch and a guided tour. Fittipaldi said, “This is my first time to the plant and Museum and I can feel the passion for this sports car. The new Pace Cars are beautiful and so much fun to drive. What a muscle car the Corvette is.”

Like the 427 Edition Z06 that opened for orders last week, there will be demand for the 30th Anniversary Pace Cars so you better get in line now. It’s my opinion that this is the best looking Pace Car since the original. For ordering information visit Kerbeck Corvette.

2008 Corvette 427 Limited Edition Z06

Today’s the day dealers can begin submitting orders for the 2008 Corvette 427 Limited Edition Z06. The Crystal Red Wil Cooksey signature edition pays homage to the fabled sixties big block and is limited to just 427 units in the US and 78 outside North America.

There are two ordering cycles for the 427 Limited Edition with the second cycle opening in two weeks. Only dealers who were allocated Z06s today are getting 427s, so all of this week’s Z06 allocations nationwide are for the 427 Limited Edition Z06.

The Z44 Option features a unique exterior paint scheme including a black “Stinger” hood, special chrome wheels, Dark Titanium Leather Wrapped interior and special 427 badges throughout. MSRP begins at $84,195.

The previous two limited edition Corvettes, 2007′s Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Championship Z06 and the Indianapolis Pace Car both sold out very quickly and there is every indication that demand will be high for the first of two planned 2008 Limited Edition Corvettes. Making its debut in May will be the 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Indianapolis 500 Pace Car.

If you are interested in placing a deposit on the 427 Corvette Z06, better jump on the phones today and give our friend Dave Salvatore of Kerbeck Corvette a call at 1-877-537-2325.
