2nd Look: The Corvette C3R Retro Stingray

Last month we took a look at the Corvette C3R Stingray, a computer rendering by Christian Cyrulewski that wrapped a modern day Corvette C6 with a new yet retro-inspired bodywork of a 1969 Corvette Stingray. Christian is back in the news with a second version of the C3R that features a few tweaks to the original rendering including lengthening the car to give it a more aggressive stance and flattening the rear deck.

The retro cues of a 1969 Corvette are of course all over the place, hence its name, but the new skin feels very modern as well. I’m not sure how the headlights will be pulled off as Christian says they are not pop-ups. The only other issue we believe to be a problem is the lack of access to the rear storage area from the removal of the rear storage hatch. However with this second group of renderings, I have become a certified fan of the C3R Stingray.

Here’s what Christian had to say about the newest version:

The changes were mostly on the rear end, I added a chamfer where the body meets the rear diffuser to visually lift the rear, I extended the rear about 25mm and narrowed it by more than 50mm to visually give it a more aggressive and planted stance. I also flattened the rear deck area and added a chamfer to the spoiler to match the profile of the 69 stingray better and also to give it a more modern look. The last change was to the front fender in front of the wheel, I added some fullness to give it better lead-in to the grill area.

The dimensions on the C3R are the same as the z06 except the length, my car is 4 inches longer. I also wanted to mention that the headlights are not pop-up, I don’t want to say right now how they work because I going to create an animation that shows the process. One of the main complaints was that people thought it was going to have the pop-up lights.

Now that the main surfaces are done I am going to focus on the details like if it is possible to have 69 style door handles and the possibility of moving the location of the fuel filler to the rear deck, again like the C3.

With General Motors in its current funk and no plans to update the current C6 Corvette body style until at least 2014, we’re hoping progress continues on the C3R Stingray and Christian will be able to bring his prototype to the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise as planned. Until then, we’ll just have to live vicariously through these awesome computer renderings.

2009 Corvette Makes Car And Driver’s 10Best List

The 2009 Corvette Makes Car and Driver's 10Best List

Car and Driver’s staff continue to show the love to Corvette by including the standard Coupe and Convertible on the magazine’s 2009 “10Best” list. Despite falling head over heels for the new Corvette ZR1, the supercharged 638-horsepower doesn’t make this list due to its base price being $34 grand north of the $71,000 MSRP cutoff. That same cutoff drops another previous Corvette inductee off the 2009 list, the 505-horsepower Z06.

But despite the fact the two performance models – the ZR1 and Z06 – didn’t make the list but the standard 430-hp Coupe and Convertible did says something about the magic that is Corvette. Listen up Congress – Car and Driver says they were “impressed by the ongoing improvements in Corvette assembly quality, materials and everyday comfort.” Fact is, the Chevrolet Corvette “continues to deliver a level of performance and stlye that’s unbeatable for the money.”

Hopefully, some members of Congress are subscribers to Car and Driver and will read in the January 2009 issue that an American automaker does make a quality, fuel efficient car that doesn’t sacrifice performance. Unfortunately, the only way some members of Congress would ever see Corvette quality first hand is to get run over by Robert Novak, but now I’m ranting. Sorry.

This is the third straight year that Corvette has made the “10Best” list. Last year’s list included the Corvette Z06 while in 2006 the standard Coupe was listed.

The only other American-made car to make the Car and Driver “10Best” list is the 2009 Cadillac CTS/CTS-V. But the Car and Driver also points out that while Cadillac coined the phrase “American Standard of the World”, in the world of sports cars, those words describe the 2009 Corvette. We couldn’t agree more.

Paul Teutul Sr's 2006 Corvette Z06

Orange County Chopper’s Paul Teutul Sr is parting with another one of his Corvettes and this time he turns to ebay to sell his personal 2006 Corvette Z06. Paul Sr bought this Corvette new and has since put only 8,700 miles on her. Every option was ordered and he added some personal touches with the custom interior and the black wheels. The car has been featured on several episodes of American Chopper and the buyer will receive DVD copies signed by Teutul.

Is this not the blackest black Corvette you’ve ever seen? It comes loaded with heads up display, navigation, power drivers seat and more. Featuring the 505 horsepower LS7 V8 engine coupled to the six speed manual transmission, this Corvette is ready to roll.

Teutul is no stranger to the auction scene when it comes to unloading part of his collection. In January 2007, Paul and his son turned to Barrett-Jackson to sell six vehicles including a 1960 fuel injected Corvette paired with a custom 2005 chopper. In this round of eBay auctions, Paul is also unloading a 1969 COPO Camaro tribute car.

In addition the signed DVD’s, the buyer may take delivery of the Corvette Z06 at Paul Sr’s estate and have the opportunity to view his personal collection of motorcycles and cars. A tour of the Newburgh NY shop is included and Paul will take photos and sign the Corvette. Pretty cool.

The eBay auction ends on November 20th and 18 bidders have the Corvette up to $48,500 currently. The reserve price has yet to be reached.

2009 Corvette Production By The Numbers (So Far)

2009 Corvette Z06 in Cyber Gray

I continue to hope that 2009 will go down in history as the year that production started on the Corvette ZR1 instead of the year that the last Corvette was made. There are buyers out there and even in a bad economy Corvettes will continue to be sold. With that said, we do have some preliminary production numbers of Corvettes for the first five months or so of the 2009 model year.

Our numbers come by way of “Zippy” who is an ambassador with the National Corvette Museum and is a well known source of info on several forum sites. He says that to date there have been 9,230 Corvettes produced for the 2009 model year. They breakdown as:

  • 4,959 Corvette Coupes
  • 1,696 Corvette Convertibles
  • 2,213 Corvette Z06s
  •    362 Corvette ZR1s

Some additional facts regarding 2009 Corvette production:

  • 362 ZR1s have been produced with a total of 509 in the ordering system.
  • 9.7% of Convertibles were built with the new 1LT Package.
  • NPP Performance Exhaust has been ordered on 51% of all Coupes and 59% of all Convertibles.

The top three colors ordered for the Corvette ZR1 were:

  • 40% Cyber Gray
  • 20% Black
  • 17% Jetstream Blue

Cyber Gray is the most popular 2009 color to date with 20% of all Corvettes ordered in the new color. Second is Black at 20% and third is Victory Red at 14%.

[VIDEO] Top Gear: Clarkson Loves the Corvette ZR1

Top Gear Testing the Corvette ZR1

The Top Gear episode that featured the 2009 ZR1 aired on Sunday and from the start you could see that Clarkson was absolutely bowled over by the power and refinement of the 638 horsepower Corvette. With no America bashing or usual snarkiness shown other than to the US Government for issues relating to the host’s visas, the show was fun to watch and very entertaining.

We expected to hear the comments that surfaced last month in which Clarkson says about his time spent in the Corvette ZR1 was fabulous, “but after three days the damn thing was beginning to disintegrate. It made me growl with annoyance and despair.” There was none of that. Instead we got the following quotes:

“This is made by two fat blokes in Kentucky.” “I’m starting to like this Corvette…it isn’t the power, it’s the surprise of the power. When you’re driving a Ferrari Enzo, you’re expecting it. This though, it’s quiet, it’s comfortable, it’s beautifully air-conditioned…so you’re simply not ready for the savagery when you put your foot down. I’ve got a heads-up display with your lateral G…and the best stereo in the world…!” “Man, this is great. ” “How can a car as docile as this one be as exciting when the road gets this twisty.” “A proper manual gearbox.” “Are you listening Ferrari? Well done fat man from Kentucky…this…is…a masterpiece!”

Unfortunately, most of the show has been pulled from YouTube due to trademark issues, but one of the segments remains. Better watch it while you can. We’ll attempt to embed the other segments as they become available:

Not to ruin the ending for you, but in the last segment, Clarkson runs the Corvette ZR1 on the Bonneville Salt Flats from 0 to the One Mile Marker in 176.549 MPH.

Let’s Go Retro: The Corvette C3R Stingray Renderings

Corvette Vaporware seems to be all the rage these days and those designs that incorporate the features of classic Corvettes always generate a ton of press. Now traveling on the intertubes at warp speed are the computer renderings by Christian Cyrulewski and his C6-based retro Corvette C3R.

The Corvette C3R Stingray is a C6 Corvette based on the classic design of the 1969 stingray, complete with vertical side vents and chrome bumpers. The rear of the C3R, from the cockpit to the taillights is almost a dead ringer of the ’69 Vette. Yet we like how the modern (and functional) influences were incorporated, particularly the Z06 rear brake ducts, giving the C3R a unique classic muscle car look with modern C6 performance.

There are not a lot of details about the C3R project other than the renderings and the notice that they are currently in the tooling development phase. TopSpeed reports that Christian is looking to have the C3R debut at the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit and rebody kits will be offered for sale if there is enough interest in the car.

I’ve noticed a trend with these computer-rendered Corvette sites that almost all will say that they will build it if there is interest. Based on what we have seen so far, the Corvette C3R is high on our list of customized Corvettes we’d most like to see offered and joins the likes of the Rossi 66 and the Fireblade.

Motor Trend tests the 2009 Corvette ZR1

Late last week we brought you the results of Motor Trend’s Corvette ZR1 instrumented test results. In their testing, MT claimed they hit a wind corrected 200.4 mph on the five mile high speed loop at Chrysler’s Arizona Proving Grounds. Video surfaced today showing a three camera view of test driver Didier Theys hitting that mark. Although he backs it down when the speedometer hits over 200 mph, it looks as though the ZR1 still had some legs for more.

Just to recap those performance test numbers from Motor Trends, the Corvette ZR1′s 0-60 mph was a blistering 3.3 seconds and it flew through the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at 130.5 mph. The Corvette ZR1 also pulled 1.10 g on the skid pad and stopped 60-to-0 in just 97 feet.

2009 Corvette ZR1 on the Nurburgring

Back in June when GM Development Engineer Jim Mero drove the 2009 Corvette ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4, we wondered out loud what that time could have been if one of Corvette Racing’s drivers, particularly Jan Magnussen, had the opportunity to drive the 6.2L Supercharged Corvette around the world’s all-important 12.9 mile track. According to several sources, we’ve learned that on Monday, October 27th, Jan Magnussen drove the Corvette ZR1 to a time of 7:22.4, besting the previous time by 4 seconds!

Jan Magnussen’s extensive knowledge of the Nordschleife and his employment with Corvette Racing makes him the perfect candidate for a second Corvette ZR1 attack on the ‘Ring. It was Magnussen that left Corvette’s first mark on the Nurburgring with his Corvette Z06 lap time of 7:42.9 back in 2005.

There is somewhat of a conspiracy afloat about this time, as it was originally posted to FasterLaps.com here and then the entry was deleted. It’s posted again here with credit from Autoblog which listed the information from the original post:

Without proof including video or a substantiated third-party eyewitness, this time will remain suspect. We also can’t imagine that GM wouldn’t take the opportunity to roll-tape as Nurburgring times have become such an important selling tool for the new super cars, Corvette ZR1 included.

Lastly, this story really leaves us wanting more. How about a race-prepped ZR1 complete with racing tires, roll bar and that really fast looking velocity yellow paint? Now that would be something to see!

Motor Trend tests the 2009 Corvette ZR1

Motor Trend hauled a Corvette ZR1 down to Arizona where they strapped their performance measuring instruments to the 638 hp King of the Hill and went wild on Chrysler’s Proving Grounds. No, the merger ain’t done yet, but Chrysler’s five mile high-speed loop is one of the few places in the US that has the space to test the Corvette ZR1′s top speed.

In addition to bringing their instruments, Motor Trend also brought a test driver who knows how to drive, former IndyCar driver and Daytona 24 Hours winner Didier Theys who drove the Corvette ZR1 and recorded the best performance numbers we’ve seen yet. The magazine hit the magic 200 mph mark, corrected due to a 25-mph headwind, and was still pulling according to the VMAX.

In the other measurements that matter, the Corvette ZR1 performed superbly. 0-to-60 mph was achieved in 3.3 seconds and the ZR1 blew through the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds at 130.5 mph. The huge Brembo carbon ceramic brakes stopped the Corvette ZR1 from 60 mph in just 97 feet. Finally, the lateral acceleration averaged at 1.1 g.

Motor Trend enjoyed their time spent with the new Corvette, and frankly, who wouldn’t. Check out the article’s opening statement:

Prepare to be humiliated. If, that is, you’re a sports-car maker other than Chevrolet. Call it what you will — “Blue Devil,” “King of the Hill,” even “Steve” – the all-new 2009 Corvette ZR1 is a world-beater.

2009 Corvette ZR1 at Milford

Last week we brought you the first instrumented test results on a 2009 Corvette ZR1 performed by Car and Driver. This week, Popular Mechanics strapped their Racelogic VBOX GPS-based data recorder to the new supercharged 6.2L Corvette and went at it on one of the test tracks inside GM’s Milford Proving Grounds. PM’s enthusiasm for the car can be summed up in one word: WOW.

One of the more interesting parts of this test is how Popular Mechanics goes into much detail about the ZR1′s launch control works, something we haven’t heard a lot about. Here’s their description of what it is and how it works:

The system automatically limits engine torque to keep the rear tires hooked up. It’s different from traction control because launch control actually allows some wheel spin and progressively feeds in power to produce jack-rabbit starts. With it, even novice drivers can maximize nearly all the thrust the ZR1 has to offer.

With the launch control engaged, the ZR1 hits 60 mph in 4 seconds and does the quarter mile in 12 seconds at 127 mph. Turning off the computer aids and relying on technique and driver skill, the Corvette ZR1 nailed 60 mph in 3.70 seconds, 100 mph in 7.80 seconds, 150 mph in 16.61 seconds. The quarter mile was run in 11.50 seconds at 127.82 mph.

Last week’s Car & Driver instrumented test also had the ZR1 running the quarter in 11.50 seconds at 128 mph.

As a further comparison, Popular Mechanics last test of the Z06 showed the 505-HP Corvette hitting 60 mph in 4.37 seconds and the quarter mile in 12 seconds at 120.90.

Finally, Popular Mechanics called the braking and skidpad results impressive with the ZR1 pulling a 1.04 g on the skidpad and braked 60-to-0 mph in 94.98 feet.
