C6 Corvette

1969 Corvette Roadster

In our final analysis of 2008′s Corvette prices, we present an overview of Corvette values by generation. This is an interesting time for Corvette buyers as many models are still showing appreciation despite the lagging market. And with some of the more collectible Corvettes giving back some of the pricing gains earned over the last couple of years, this could be a real buying opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts should the right Corvette present itself.

The following are highlights from our 2009 Corvette Price Guide:

1953-1962:
The first generation Corvettes had mixed results with some models showing a negative 5-7% depreciation factor, while on the plus side of the ledger appreciation results ranged for 2-9%. The high average price for this series was the 1953 Roadster at $294,500. At the low end of the price scale was the 1961 Roadster at an average price of $45,000, showing an appreciation factor of 2%. We expect the 1953 model to continue to show depreciation in average price with the majority of these solid axles showing positive results for the 2009 calendar year.

1963-1967:
The mid-years have regained the appreciation lead with all models showing an appreciation factor of 4-9%. The price leader in average price continues to be the 1967 Roadster at an average price of $61,000. The entry level price for the mid-years continues to be the 1964 Coupe at $35,000 in average price.

1968-1982:
The average price range for this generation of Corvettes starts at $9,200, the average price of a 1978 T- Top that showed no change in average price from last year. The average price for the series tops out at $29,500, the average price of the 1970 Roadster that showed an appreciation factor of 7%. The average price of the third generation Corvettes ranges from a depreciation factor of -8% to a +10% appreciation factor.

1984-1996:
There was quite a change last year in the average price for the fourth generation Corvette models. Our 2008 Price Guide showed many with single digit appreciation factors and a few in the double digit range. The 2009 Price Guide shows none in the appreciation column with two holding on as ‘no change’ in average price. Several are now showing double digit depreciation. The high average price for this series is $52,000, going to the 1996 Grand Sport Roadster. The low end is represented by the 1984 Coupe with an average price of $8,600 and a 1% depreciation factor. Hurting the average price of this series is the pricing of the C5 Corvettes with many selling under the $20,000 mark in average price.

1997-2004:
This series continues to show negative results in average price ranging from a -6% to -18%. The high average price for this series is $31,000, going to a 2003 Anniversary Roadster that showed a –9% depreciation factor. As we have said on numerous occasions, one buys a lot of Corvette power in this series for under $20,000. At some point soon, the double digit depreciation factors will improve to single digits.

2005-2009:
As expected, all models are showing double digit depreciation in average resale price. We don’t expect this to subside since average prices start at $31,500 for a 2005 Coupe and top out at $64,000 for the Ron Fellows Special Edition Z06. The state of the US economy will continue to have a major negative impact on the average price of these Corvettes.

Corvette Z06 Police Car

The National Corvette Museum put out a call yesterday for silver C5/C6 Corvette coupes that will be transformed into state police escorts for labor day’s National Corvette Caravan celebration. The coupes chosen for duty will have a lightbar and graphics installed and will lead each of the four national caravans converging on Bowling Green.

From the Corvette Museum:

Here is your chance to drive your Corvette down the highway decorated as a state police vehicle with a light bar on top and vehicle markings as the lead in for the caravan! We are looking for owners of four silver C5/C6 coupes that are willing to become State Police Caravan Escorts when four caravans cross into Kentucky. The four lead Corvettes, with help from the Kentucky State Police, will be fitted with vinyl State Police markings and working light bars. A KSP trooper will be your passenger and you will be assigned a border crossing point to meet a designated Caravan. If you are interested, email your contact information and a picture to events@corvettemuseum.org. We will hold a drawing May 15th and announce the four caravan lead vehicles. These Corvettes will also be the featured display on Thursday, September 3 during the event. In case you were wondering…no, you can’t keep the light bar or write tickets. These cars will need to be available on Wednesday and Thursday September 2-3.

In addition to the police escort cars, the NCM is putting together two other special displays. On Friday, September 4th, the NCM will host a “First and Last” display featuring a Corvette from the first and last year of each generation. On Saturday, September 5th, the Museum will display 12-15 Corvettes that were part of the original 1994 Corvette Caravan. If you are interested in participating in either of these displays, contact the national Corvette museum at events@corvettemuseum.org.

Would you like to join thousands of Corvettes from across the nation as they trek to Bowling Green for the 15th Anniversary celebration of the National Corvette Museum? Check out the Corvette Caravan for details on this unique experience.

February 2009 Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on March 3, 2009

GM released its sales figures today that show 1,027 Corvettes were delivered in February 2009. While the sales number is down 50% over February 2008′s 2,071 Corvettes delivered, the good news is that this is a 22% increase over the paltry 842 Corvettes delivered in January 2009.

2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition

We got word last month of GM planning a second special edition Corvette for 2009 that would commemorate Corvette Racing’s successful 10 year run in the American Le Mans series. Now official, the 2009 Corvette GT1 Championship Edition celebrates over 70 victories in the ALMS, eight GT1 Manufacturer Championships and five GT1 class victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The GT1 Championship Edition is available in the Coupe, Convertible or Z06 models in either 45U Velocity Yellow or 41U Black. The series will have its own specific VIN sequences: 300001 for the Velocity Yellows which represent the #3 Corvette C6.R and 40001 for Black which represents the #4 C6.R. Only 600 will be produced this spring and those are limited to 200 for each body style and 100 in each color.

The GT1 Championship Edition features C6.R livery inspired graphics which feature the mascot “Jake” ghost-painted on the hood bulge, years of the championships and drivers flags. Also making the Corvettes unique are the ZR1 full width body color spoiler and chrome wheels. The coupes and convertibles include the Z51 Performance Package, NPP Performance exhaust and MX0 6-Speed Paddle Shift Automatics. The GT1 Corvette coupe also comes with the optional C2L Dual Roof package. All three GT1 models get the optional U3U Navigation Systems as well.

Inside the GT1 Corvettes you’ll find a custom leather wrapped ebony interior with exclusive yellow accent stitching, GT1 embroidery on the leather seats, instrument panel and center console armrest. Under the hood is a special engine cover with a carbon pattern and yellow Corvette lettering. A windshield banner is also included and is installed by the owner.

Pricing for the GT1 Championship Edition starts at $65,310 for the 4LT Coupe, $71,815 for the 4LT Convertible and $86,385 for the 3LZ Corvette Z06.

If you’re interested in this highly anticipated commemorative Corvette, you better give Dave and the gang at Kerbeck Corvette a call immediately at 1-877-537-2325 and make sure you tell them CorvetteBlogger sent you!

Torch Red Making a Return on the 2010 Corvette?

by Keith Cornett on February 5, 2009

Victory Red C6 (L) and a Torch Red C5 (R)

Chatter has been building over the last week about the possible return of Torch Red as a color option on the 2010 Corvette. Corvette Conti says Motown sources are telling him that Torch Red will be available as well as one other new color. Could that new color could be related to the expected return of the Grand Sport?

Conti thinks that one such color that could be used on the 2010 Grand Sport is Imperial Blue which was featured on the AllState 400 Corvette Z06 Pace Car in 2008.

What hasn’t really been discussed yet is which color(s) may be dropped to support the addition of two new colors. We are assuming that Victory Red would be retired with the return of Torch Red as opposed to dropping the darker shaded Crystal Red. However, with the Cadillac XLR being retired, it could open up additional capacity to Corvette to add another color without first discontinuing an existing color.

What ever the case, these kinds of tidbits are usually out on the table and confirmed by GM just prior to the C5/C6 Bash at the National Corvette Museum in April. We’ll be attending the show this year and you can count on us to bring you all the sites and sounds of the new 2010 Corvette as well as an update on the NCM’s expansion project.

January 2009 Corvette Sales

by Keith Cornett on February 3, 2009

GM released the first sales figures for the new year and for the first time since we started keeping track in 2006, Corvette deliveries dropped below 1,000 units to close at 842 for the month of January. Unfortunately for both GM and the assembly workers in Bowling Green, 842 Corvette sales does little to alleviate the supply of Corvettes on the ground and the slow sales could force the company to keep the factory’s doors closed longer than planned.

[PICS] C6 Corvette Char-Grilled in the Ukraine

by Keith Cornett on February 1, 2009

C6 Corvette Char-Grilled in the Ukraine

These photos come to us from English Russia showing the aftermath of a Corvette that burned while parked along a residential street in the Ukraine. Despite a police report that states that traces of arson were not detected at the scene, English Russia believes the car was burned because people “can’t stand those rich punks riding their hundred thousand dollar cars when around everything looks ruined and school teacher’s salary is $100/month.”

We’re hoping the Corvette C6 wasn’t burned as a result of class warfare. The site of the American-born sports car should lift up people up with visions of freedom and liberty – a shining 4-wheel version of the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately, due to huge European taxes and shipping, Corvettes can sell for double or even triple their costs in the States and so there is a certain resentment from the locals.

Hennessey Unleashes the 705hp Corvette ZR700

by Keith Cornett on January 30, 2009

Hennessey’s 705hp Corvette ZR700

For some the 2009 Corvette ZR1′s 638 horsepower is simply not enough. Hennessey Performance solves that problem with their latest creation, the Corvette ZR700. An extensive list of bolt-ons and a custom tune unleash the fury of the ZR1 by boosting horsepower to 705 and torque to 717lb-ft. The numbers are awe-inspiring.

Hennessey’s Corvette ZR700 rips through the quarter mile in 11.03 seconds at 136 mph. 0-60 mph was timed at 3.1 seconds and 0-150 mph was 13.9 seconds. The estimated top speed is 212 mph.

To squeeze the extra performance out of the Corvette ZR1′s LS9, Hennessey increases the supercharger boost from 11psi to 14psi and then adds a K&N air filter, stainless steel headers, high flow catalytic converters, upgrades the intercooler system and finishes up with a dyno test and tune session. Watch the Corvette ZR700′s quarter mile run at Lonestar Motorsports Park:

If the 705 hp ZR700 isn’t enough for you, Hennessey adds even more upgrades and goes into the engine with high flow cylinder heads and an agressive cam shaft that boosts horsepower to an astonishing 755.

2009 GT-1 Championship Edition Corvette

Tom Hill, Quality Engineering Manager at the Corvette Assembly Plant announced to NCRS members attending the Winter Regional meet in Kissimmee, Florida last weekend that a new limited edition package called the GT-1 Edition would be produced this Spring. Like the Competition Sport Package, the GT-1 Edition centers around the Corvette Racing theme with team mascot “Jake” prominently displayed.

The package will reportedly be available on Coupe, Convertible and Z06 models. They will include your choice of either 45U Velocity Yellow with Black Stripes or 41U Black with Yellow Stripes. Both colors feature the now familiar “Jake” mascot as well as other graphics inspired by the Corvette Racing C6.Rs like the distinctive yellow windshield banner.

Another unique feature will include graphics that will have the driver’s names on the roof just like the C6.R. The championships that the Corvette Racing C6.R team has won will be displayed on a lower door script graphic. Other features include black headlamps on the Velocity Yellow models and Genuine Corvette Accessories (GCA) body colored door handles and carbon fiber patterned engine covers.

All GT-1 Championship models include the ZR1′s full width spoiler in body color and Q9V Forged Chrome Wheels. The Coupe and Convertible models will come equipped with the Z51 Performance Package and NPP Performance Exhaust.

Each of the GT-1 Edition interiors will receive exclusive GT-1 embroidery on the seats and console lid. Ebony 4LT (Coupe and Convertible) and 3LZ (Z06) interiors and shifter will be accentuated with yellow stitching. Included will be a Special Console Trim Plate with specific VIN sequencing and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Pricing and availability are expected sometime in February.

With 2009 being the end of Corvette Racing’s reign of the GT-1 class in the ALMS and Le Mans, collectors and Corvette Racing fans alike will have the opportunity to show their support when driving this unique tribute to the C6.R team to a Corvette corral later this year and beyond.
