2009 Competition Sport Corvette

Thirty years from now Corvette collectors are going to talking about the two special edition Corvettes that rolled out of Bowling Green in 2009. That’s because the two qualities collectors covet – high performance and limited production – have all but guaranteed the GT1 Championship Edition and the Competition Sport Edition a special place in Corvette history.

According to Chevrolet literature, the Competition Sport package was built for the owner who attends driving schools and track events. The edition was available in both Z06 and Z51 coupe configurations and featured performance options like the differential cooler, NPP exhaust and heads-up display.

The Z51-equipped 1LT coupe version was priced at $55,655 while the Z06 1LZ model was listed for $77,500 including charges. Only 72 CSC Corvettes were built and here is the production breakdown:

2009 GT1 Championship Edition Corvette

The GT1 Championship Edition was built to commemorate the 10 years of Corvette Racing’s successful run in the American Le Mans series. That run included over 70 victories, eight GT1 Manufacturer Championships and five GT1 class victories at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Essentially there were six versions of the GT1 Championship Corvettes built. The GT1 Championship Edition was available in Coupe, Convertible or Z06 models with your choice of Velocity Yellow or Black. And because it was a commemorative model, the GT1′s race inspired graphics feature Corvette Racing’s Jake mascot ghost-painted on the hood bulge as well as years of the championships and driver’s National flags.

Pricing for the GT1 Championship Edition started at $65,310 for the 4LT Coupe, $71,815 for the 4LT Convertible and $86,385 for the 3LZ Corvette Z06. Although 600 were planned for production, only 125 were built. Here is the production breakdown:

Chevrolet Celebrates Production of the 1,500,000th Corvette

Another milestone was reached in the 56 year history of the Chevrolet Corvette. On May 28th, this Arctic White Corvette Convertible became the 1.5 millionth Corvette ever made.

Chevrolet Product Marketing Manager Karen Rafferty made the announcement of the milestone at a recent meeting of the Greater Atlanta Automotive Media Association. “The 1.5 millionth Corvette is a great example of how Chevy is America’s Brand,” Rafferty said. “For nearly 60 years we have built America’s Sports Car and this milestone is a solid proof point.”

Like its predecessors, the 1.5 millionth Corvette features a white exterior with red interior and a black top. The Corvette has a 3LT options package.

This C6 Corvette joins the other milestone Corvettes built previously. The first Corvette rolled off the assembly line on June 30, 1953 in Flint, Michigan. Twenty four years later, the 500,000 Corvette was built in 1977. The one millionth Corvette was built in 1992.

GM CEO Fritz Henderson Discusses Corvette's Future

GM CEO Fritz Henderson spoke out again on Corvette through another live chat on GM’s Fastlane blog. The comments on Corvette were the first from GM’s leader since the company entered bankruptcy proceedings earlier this week.

A participant named John asked if the “Corvette will survive as the V8 engined rear wheel drive icon we all love”.

Fritz Henderson’s response:

Yes. My wonderful baby is my 2005 Corvette coupe. We have more in store for the future and this iconic brand will retain its powerful place within the new GM.

Official pricing for the 2010 Corvette coupe and convertible models was released today. For those of you trying to decide between ordering one of the regular Coupe or Convertible body styles or going with the new Grand Sport, this price comparison should be helpful. The good news is that pricing for the 2010 is only being increased by $365!

Here is the pricing for the 2010 Corvette Coupe and Convertible models:

  • 2010 Corvette Coupe Base MSRP $49,880 including destination.
  • 2010 Corvette Convertible Base MSRP $54,530 including destination.

As we posted last week, the Grand Sports will open at:

  • 2010 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe Base MSRP $55,720 including destination.
  • 2010 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible Base MSRP $59,530 including destination.

So the difference between the two models for each body style:

May 2009 Corvette Sales

The news about Corvette sales just keeps getting better. For the fifth straight month, Corvette sales were stronger than the month prior. Chevrolet dealers sold 1,643 Corvettes in May, a 14% increase over April’s 1,407 deliveries. The May 2009 sales figure was also the highest since 2,318 Corvettes were sold in September of 2008.

2010 Corvette Grand Sport Launch Control Tested in Dealer's Lot

We showed you how the 2010 Corvette’s Launch Control works from the GM video shown at the National Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash back in April. On Thursday, one of GM’s preproduction 2010 Corvette Grand Sports was at Les Stanford Chevrolet in Dearborn, Michigan and demonstrated the new feature – in their parking lot!

The new Launch Control system is very easy to engage. Just put your manual Corvette’s traction control into competitive mode and push the throttle to the floor. The system will hold a predetermined RPM and when the driver dumps the clutch, the launch control system modulates engine torque 100 times per second to get the best traction.

Les Stanford was quick to point out that this was a GM car and not a customers car or a car that would be for sale. The best news is that had this been an actual customer’s Corvette, using the launch control system will not void the warranty.

Offical 2010 Corvette Grand Sport Pricing Released

We got word today from Dave Salvatore of Kerbeck Corvette that pricing for the 2010 Corvette Grand Sport has been released. When the Grand Sport was introduced at the National Corvette Museum in April, Team Corvette members Harlan Charles and Tadge Juechter both said that people will be pleased when the final price is announced. Having seen the numbers, we see again why Corvette beats all sports cars in the performance per dollar category.

2010 Corvette Grand Sport Pricing:

  • 2010 Grand Sport Coupe starts at $55,720 including DFC
  • 2010 Grand Sport Convertible starts at $59,530 including DFC

Going off the current year pricing, that’s $6,205 more than the base Coupe and $5,360 for the base Convertible. Taking into account that we are expecting to see a pricing increase on the base coupe and convertibles, as well as the fact that the Grand Sport takes the place of the Z51 option which costs $1,695 and you are essentially looking at $3,665-4510 upgrade for the new wide-body design, complete with Z06 brakes, tuned suspension and a better 0-60 mph performance of 4.0 vs 4.2.

A quick check on some of the forums show that people are generally pleased with the pricing of the new model. Considering that most garage wide body conversions cost around $10,000, this new model should sell well.

Pricing on the Corvette models for 2010 should be forthcoming shortly which will also include pricing for the Z15 GS Heritage Package which will be available sometime in the fall.

Karvajal's Corvette ZX-1 Corvette Widebody Conversion

New York-based Karvajal Design has just recently launched a new Corvette conversion package called the ZX-1. The page comes in two stages with the first being a complete body conversion while the second stage addresses performance. After reading the specs and checking out some of the photos, our exuberance for the ZX-1 is about on par with the facial expression on the model pictured above.

The ZX-1 starts with widening the Corvette C6′s body from 72″ to 80″. A copious amount of LEDs are added both front and rear and a custom exhuast, rear diffuser and 19/20″ HRE Aluminum wheels complete the look. Underneath the widebody, Karvajal added a Magnuson supercharger to produce over 600 horsepower and Brembo disc brakes, a Pfaft coil-over suspension and a full under-body aero design complete the package.

Inside the Corvette ZX-1, buyers can choose to go with a leather interior trim or do a premium upgrade that includes alcantara race seats and door panels, aluminum sill plates, floor mats and a leather-wrapped flat bottom steering wheel.

Karvajal Designs plans to build 300 ZX-1s with packages starting at $69,900. Customers supply the donor Corvette. The very first Corvette ZX-1 was built using a 2007 Corvette C6 and that car was recently listed on ebay with a buy-it-now price of $185,000.

GM Delivers Corvette ZR1 to German Prince

Prince Albert von Thurn und Taxis recently took delivery of a new Corvette ZR1 in Bonstetten, Switzerland. The Prince is a descendant of one of Germany’s old and wealthy noble families and is an avid race car driver who currently drives a Lamborghini in the FIA GT European Championship and the GT3 Class with Reiter Engineering. Owning a Corvette ZR1 was reportedly a “must-have” for the Prince.

Prince Albert’s racing pedigree includes the current European Lamborghini Cup title, vice champion of the German ADAC GT Masters 2008 and a stint in the FIA GT European Championship behind the wheel of a Lamborghini. He also currently races with Reiter Engineering, using the German firm’s GT3-class Lamborghini Gallardo race car. Despite his racing success, we understand the car will be used for personal driving as no plans have been announced to race the American super car.

Prince Albert joins the list of race car drivers who have purchased a 2009 Corvette ZR1. Other notable race car drivers include Mario Andretti, Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon.

2010 Corvette Production Constraints

2010 Corvette Production Constraints

The first list of order constraints on the 2010 Corvette are out and we are pleased to see that there are no major options constrained for the new Grand Sport models other than the expected delay of the Z15 Heritage package. It’s normal for the factory to limit some of the new options as production ramps up and for the most part that is what we are seeing. The allocation groups for 2010 have changed slightly as well so that all Corvettes except the ZR1 are in one group and the ZR1 is by itself in another.

Vette Group (Coupe, Convertible, GS Coupe, GS Convertible, Z06)

  • 70U Torch Red Exterior – limited to 54 available
  • US8 Audio System – Single CD with 12 months XM – 22 available
  • Z15 Grand Sport Heritage Package – 0 Available

ZR1 Group

  • 10U Artic White Exterior – 3 available
  • 89U Crystal Red Exterior – 3 available

In regards to the Grand Sport Heritage Package, the Z15 option includes two-tone leather seats, Grand Sport logo seat headrest embroidery and dealer-installed fender stripe hash marks. GM told us at the NCM’s C5/C6 Birthday Bash that this package probably wouldn’t be available until sometime in the Fall of 2009. We do understand that the Hash Marks will be available through dealers as part of the Corvette Genuine Accessories catalog.

Although 2010 Corvette pricing hasn’t been made public yet (expect another 2 weeks or so), dealers can and are taking 2010 Corvette orders. Finally, here is the latest schedule of operations for the Bowling Green Assembly Plant through the end of August. The schedule is subject to change based on GM’s ongoing restructuring:

June: Closed the weeks of June 1, June 8 and June 29. Open the weeks of June 15, June 22.
July:  Closed the weeks of July 6, July 13. Open the weeks of July 20, July 27.
August: Closed the weeks of August 3, August 10. Open the weeks of August 17, August 23.

The model year change over is expected around the end of July, however, new production could be postponed should GM go into bankruptcy proceedings this summer. We’ll know more about that process in the coming weeks as well.
