Corvette-Based SV 9 Competizione Ready to Impress

Late last week we began hearing whispers of a new Corvette-based custom coach from SV Motor Company. We contacted them and sure enough, they confirmed they have two units in the final assembly stage. Although SV will be introducing the 9 Competizione in the coming days, they were more than happy to provide us with an exclusive first look.

The SV 9 Competizione combines the powertrain of the world-class American-made Corvette C6 with a new Italian-styled custom coachbuilt body and upgraded interior. While the 9 C retains the distinctive C6 Corvette shape, the new custom body is full of design cues that shout “That’s Italian!” The result is one of best Corvette coaches we’ve seen in a field crowded with Corvette coaches.

The SV 9′s unique carbon fiber body was designed to allow the passage of high velocity air around and through the body surfaces. The front end is the most striking change with the mesh grillwork designed to capture maximum air while the vents on the hood and rear ducts keep the engine bay temperatures down and brakes cool. The rear end gets the Italian treatment as well with the Corvette’s dual brake lights converted from two per side to just one and the exhaust ports are split to each side.

All that carbon fiber goodness drops the curb weight of the standard Corvette C6 by 132 pounds to just 3085 lbs and provides a 50/50 front to rear weight distribution. As for performance, the base Corvette’s LS3 436 horses are bumped up to 450 and 445 lb ft of torque with SV’s revised intake and a custom-tuned exhaust. The ANSA Automotive exhaust system is based from their designs used on the Ferrari Daytona and 599. Estimates are the enhancements will propel the 9 Competizione to a 0-60 mph time of 4.0 seconds and 12.0 in the quarter mile.

Brakes and suspension have been specifically tailored for the SV 9 Competizione. Lateral acceleration is estimated to be 1.03g and braking 60-0 mph is an incredible 107 feet. Pirelli PZero Rosso ultra performance tires give the 9 C plenty of grip.

Inside the cockpit, the 9 C gets carbon fiber reinforced seating upholstered in hand-tooled Italian leather. Owners can opt for burlwood, carbon fiber or leather finished steering wheels that are custom matched to the instrument panel and console. In fact, SV takes the customization theme to a whole new level with the 9 C. 25 different exterior colors – 18 standard and 7 special edition colors – are available. Four wheel choices and five interior trim choices ensure that the odds of seeing two of a kind are virtually non-existent.

The SV 9 Competizione will be limited to 1,000 units at a cost of $99,995 which includes a new, well-equipped donor C6 Corvette purchased through their dealer network. Compared to other supercars and exotics, the Corvette-based SV 9 C might just be one of the best custom coachwork bargains of the year. The first showing of the SV 9 Competizione is this Saturday evening in San Francisco. The car will also be on display August 14 at the Concorso Italiano.

APB: Po-Po Driving a Confiscated Corvette Z06 in Raleigh, NC

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office just confiscated a Corvette Z06 from a baddie and turned it into an unmarked police car. This has been confirmed by several in the Raleigh area who have seen the car lit up like a Christmas tree along I40 as well as the guy who installed the light bar.

Posted on horsepowerjunkies.com was this quote supposedly from a Wake County Sheriff’s Deputy:

That SUM BITCH is BADD! It was a drug seizure vehicle, and the county nor the state spent a dime on that car except to put gas in it. All of the lights and equipment in the car is recycled from another cruiser that has been retired. The only way you will get away from this car is if you go through a parking lot with speed bumps, or cross a median.”

According to others that chimed in, the vehicle was donated by a local drug dealer who paid cash for the car. Other than time spent installing the light bar, no other expenses have been incurred in turning this Corvette into a police car.

“No expenses” may be the case, but wait until the Sheriff’s office needs to come up with $2K for a set of new tires!

Hertz Selling Corvette ZHZ's at Dealer Auction

It appears that Hertz has starting to sell off a few of their special edition rental Corvette ZHZs. In an email to our friends at CorvetteConti.com, a visitor tells Rick that three of the specially-badged Velocity Yellow and Black striped coupes ran through the dealer-only Manheim auto auction in South Florida last Friday.

Hertz and other car rental agencies generally begin to sell off their inventory after a year or so of rental duty. These three Hertz ZHZ Corvette coupes each have between 22,000 to 25,000 miles and are described to be in “driver” condition with some scratches and worn seats.

The visitor tells Rick that the three Corvettes sold for $31,400, $31,500 and $31,600.

As Manheim is a registered dealer only auction, we expect these Corvettes to be offered for sale to the public in the near future. As Conti correctly points out, let’s hope that dealers aren’t getting one of these Corvettes:

Ran Across a 2010 Corvette Grand While on Vacation

We’re spending this 4th of July weekend in Savannah and while taking a walk in the historic distric, low and behold I come across this 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. As it had a Michigan license plate and a “captured test fleet” sticker on the window, I figured some lucky GM engineer was also in town for the wonderful Southern atmosphere and holiday fireworks.

I tried to explain to my family the significance of running across one of these new Corvettes but frankly they think I’m crazy. I’m not crazy, I just have “Corvette Fever”. I took a pic right there on the spot and sent it to my Twitter account. I tried to explain that process to them too, but then realized I probably am crazy.

So what are the odds of a Corvette Blogger running across one of these CTF Corvette Grand Sports while on vacation? Slim to none is my thinking so I’m buying a lottery ticket tonight. Who knows, maybe lightning will strike twice!

Corvette Coupe Tops Strategic Vision's 2009 Quality List

Just a week after JD Power announced the Chevrolet Corvette as the best Sports car, Strategic Vision’s 2009 Total Quality Awards bestows the same title on the 2009 Corvette Coupe. Not only did Corvette perform better than any other car in its “Premium Coupe” class, its score of 938 was higher than any other class winner in the survey.

The Strategic Vision survey gathers its results differently than JD Power. While JD Power surveys approximately four times as many consumers, Strategic Vision rates the positive and negative aspects of buying, owning and driving vehicles.

“The difference between products that generate consideration, build brands and increase sales versus those that do not,” says Dr. Darrel Edwards, chairman of Strategic Vision, “is often how much delight and love the product generates with its customers.”

Other GM vehicles that ranked well in the survey include the Pontiac G8 (899), the GMC Envoy (859) and the GTM Yukon XL (899). Below are all the class winners as ranked in the 2009 Strategic Vision Total Quality Awards:

In a scene somewhat reminiscent of Boris Said’s fire in the LG Motorsports #28 GT2 Corvette at Long Beach, this SCCA racer was recently tearing up the track at Road America when his C6 T-1 race car caught on fire.

Apparently oblivious to the fire raging underneath his Corvette, the racer lost control and swung around as the intense flames had melted the tires. Here’s how it all unfolded

2010 Corvette Z06 Details and Pricing Announced

by Keith Cornett on June 18, 2009

2010 Corvette Z06

Once the toast of the town, the Corvette Z06 has recently been overshadowed in the news by its two stable mates, the supercharged 638-hp Corvette ZR1 and the new 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. But that doesn’t mean the Corvette Z06 performance and looks have been diminished in any capacity. Far from it. The 505-hp Corvette Z06 remains one of the best performance values on the market and to make sure the Corvette stays within reach of its target market, GM is only upping the price of the 2010 Z06 by $360 over the 2009 model.

Like the other 2010 Corvettes, new to the Z06 is Launch Control and side airbags. On the 3LZ package, buyers will also get power sport seats and power passenger seats. As for the trim, the Corvette Z06 will be offered in all eight standard Corvette colors including Arctic White, Crystal Red Metallic and the new Torch Red.

One the inside, buyers will be able to select a new Cashmere interior later this year and two new console trims called Orbit and Gunmetal will debut. The cross-flags logo can also be embroidered on the seat headrests.

Pricing for the 2010 Corvette Z06 starts at $75,235 which is an increase of $360 over 2009′s MSRP of $74,875.

Here is the full press release from General Motors on the 2010 Corvette Z06

Corvette Z06 details

With racing-inspired powertrain and suspension features, t he Corvette Z06 delivers exceptional levels of capability and technology, making it one of the best performance values on the market. It has an aluminum frame, with carbon-fiber fenders and door panels, making it the lightest Corvette model available.

Design – The Z06 has an unmistakable and aggressive appearance, with design cues that include:

  • A wide front fascia with a large, forward-facing grille opening, a splitter along the bottom and wheel opening extensions along the sides to provide aerodynamic downforce
  • A cold-air scoop in front of the hood that integrates an air inlet system for the engine
  • The trailing edge of the front wheel opening is radiused to achieve improved drag, but protects the body finish with a tough molding, and a large air extractor is behind the wheel
  • A fixed-roof body style optimizes body rigidity and mass
  • Wide rear fenders with flares cover the massive rear tires and a brake cooling scoop in front of the wheels visually balances the fender extractor
  • A tall rear spoiler houses the CHMSL on the top of the rear fascia
  • 10-spoke spider-design wheels (18-inch front; 19-inch rear)
  • Four large stainless steel exhaust outlets
  • Z06 badging on the carbon-fiber front fenders

The aerodynamics of the Z06’s exterior were shaped by the experiences of the Corvette racing program, where high-speed stability and cornering capability are paramount. While the race cars use large rear wings, the Z06’s elevated spoiler provides sufficient downforce to balance the road-worthy front splitter without adversely affecting aerodynamic drag.

For all of its race-inspired functionality, the Z06 is designed to be a daily-drivable high-performance vehicle. To that end, comfort and convenience are held to a very high standard. High-Intensity Discharge lighting, fog lamps, leather seating, dual-zone air conditioning, cabin air filtration and head-up display (HUD) with track mode and g-meter are standard.

The Z06 gauge cluster displays the Z06 logo on the 7000-redline tachometer, and has a readout on the oil pressure gauge to reflect the higher standard pressure of the dry-sump oiling system. The seats feature two-tone leather surfaces with Z06-logo embroidery and contrasting stitching.

LS7 engine – The Z06’s LS7 7.0L (427 cubic inches) engine delivers 505 horsepower (377 kW) in a 3,175-pound (1,440 kg) package – a combination that delivers 0-60 performance of 3.7 seconds in first gear, quarter-mile times of 11.7 seconds at 125 mph and a top speed of 198 mph (as recorded on Germany’s Autobahn).

Drivetrain – The Corvette Z06’s powertrain and drivetrain systems are matched to the LS7’s performance capability. The light, four-into-one headers discharge into close-coupled catalytic converters and through two-mode mufflers. The mufflers each feature a vacuum-actuated outlet valve, which controls exhaust noise during low-load operation but opens for maximum power.

At the rear of the LS7 engine, a single-mass flywheel and lightweight, high-capacity clutch channel torque to the rear transaxle. The six-speed manual transmission has been strengthened to handle the LS7’s increased torque load. The transmission includes a pump that sends transmission fluid to the front radiator for cooling. Upon its return, the fluid removes additional heat from the differential lube before returning to the transmission. The six-speed transmission connects to a limited-slip differential, with enlarged ring and pinion gears. Stronger axle half-shafts with tougher universal joints transmit power to the rear wheels.

Structure – The Z06 has a unique aluminum body structure for optimum stiffness and light weight for the fixed-roof body style. Perimeter rails are one-piece hydroformed aluminum members featuring cast suspension nodes, which replace many welded steel components on other Corvette models. Advanced structural composites featuring carbon-fiber are bonded to the aluminum structure. The wider front wheelhouses, for example, are carbon composites and the passenger compartment floors combine carbon-fiber skins with an ultra-lightweight balsa wood core.

The Z06 has a magnesium cradle that serves as the attachment point for the engine and some front suspension components. Magnesium is lighter than aluminum, yet incredibly strong. The magnesium cradle helps improve the front-to-rear weight distribution, as do carbon-fiber front fenders and wheelhouses. Engineers also moved the battery from underhood to a position in the rear cargo area, behind one of the rear wheels.

Suspension and brakes – The Z06 retains the 105.7-inch (2,686-mm) wheelbase of other Corvette models, as well as the short-long arm suspension and transverse spring design, but it rides on all-new wheels, tires and brakes, as well as its own rear spring and roll stabilizer.

The firmer suspension works harmoniously with large 18 x 9.5-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels and 275/35ZR18 tires in the front, and 19 x 12-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels with 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear. The tires use the latest extended-mobility technology from Goodyear to provide a satisfactory ride, but still allow the vehicle to achieve lateral acceleration of more than 1 g.

Complementing the suspension system and large rolling stock is an equally capable four-wheel disc brake system, consisting of 14-inch (355 mm) vented and cross-drilled front rotors and 13.4-inch (340 mm) vented and cross-drilled rear rotors.

The front rotors are acted upon by large, red-painted six-piston calipers that use six individual brake pads. Individual brake pads are used because they deliver more equalized wear compared to what would otherwise be a pair of very long single-piece pads. The rear brakes use four-piston calipers with four individual brake pads. A four-channel ABS system is standard, as is a very competent active handling system – complete with a Competitive Driving mode.

*SAE certified.
