Once upon a time, a bunch of guys got together with a crazy idea – build rockets that go farther and faster than mankind had ever gone before. It’s nice to know that America still builds rockets – The 2011 Chevrolet Corvette.
We heard back in January that GM was considering adding a program that would allow owners the opportunity to build the engine that would be installed in their new Corvette. Yesterday, GM announced that the Corvette Engine Build Program would be available starting in 2011 for customers who order a Corvette Z06 or ZR1.
I was looking back at some of the raw video I took in May when I test drove a 2010 Corvette Grand Sport Convertible. One of the features any C6 Corvette owner enjoys is watching the gauge cluster light-up on startup. At night, the effect is even more dramatic.
Corvettes from various years returned to the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed held in England on July 2nd-4th. Although Chevrolet had a 2010 Corvette ZR1 on display as well as a new Camaro, it was a 1963 Grand Sport Corvette Coupe that stole the show.
There was some morning show hi-jinks happening today at Bondurant’s School of High Performance Driving. The local fox affiliate’s morning show was live as Mr. T and the crew of WillItMakeIt.com were on hand to perform some of their stunts, which included a hot pursuit reenactment with Roscoe P. Coltrane’s ,1970’s Plymouth Fury Police Car trying desperately to keep up to Bob Bondurant’s 2010 Corvette ZR1.
William Shanteau and 13 other Chrysler auto workers had been pooling their money on various lottery tickets for years and last month one of those purchases won the group $25 million from the Powerball lottery. So what’s first car that comes to mind for Shanteau to spend some of his $1.2 million after taxes? You guessed it…A Torch Red C6 Corvette!
GM released the sales figures for June today and the report shows Corvette sales holding steady with 1,405 deliveries. This is a decrease of just 23 Corvettes over May 2010′s 1,428 Corvettes. However, if you recall our analysis of May’s numbers, you’ll remember that deliveries were the highest since September 2009. So the fact that Corvette sales were nearly identical to May is good news. Want even more good news? Calendar year sales shows an increase of 0.6% over June’s 2009 1,396 deliveries.
Here are some real world photos of the C6 Corvette-based Rossi SixtySix from its appearance at the Bloomington Gold Corvette show last weekend. While computer renderings are cool in all, it’s refreshing to see a car actually live up to the hype.
The Robin Hood Rally is a reality show will soon air on the Versus network that pits amateur drivers racing flat out on closed public roads. The only problem with the premise: They’re amateurs! So it’s no surprise that in only the 2nd event out of 10 planned finds one of the drivers airlifted to the hospital with injuries sustained in a crash involving a Corvette Z06, BMW m3 and a Mini Cooper.
Some people have really cool jobs. Just ask Edmunds Inside Line Road Test Editor Chris Walton who found an excuse to play with three special Corvettes at Willow Springs Raceway. Billed as the Corvettemegeddon Comparison, Chris drove a prototype of the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon edition, a 2010 Grand Sport Coupe and a 2002 Z06 and put the three sports cars through a series of high performance tests. Check out the video after the jump.
