Since the introduction of the Corvette ZR1 in 2009, carbon ceramic brakes have been available on production Corvettes. General Motors turned to Brembo to provide the brakes for the top of the line Corvette ZR1 and after the jump, you’ll see how they are made courtesy of the Science Channel.
Time and time again we see custom supercars built around the C6 Corvette. The Rossi 66 and Bertone’s Mantide are two that have successfully made the jump from vaporware to production. And last week we learned German-based Endora cars is planning on using the C6 Corvette as the basis for their supercar, the Endora SC-1.
We’ve noted several good Corvette buys this weekend at Dana Mecum’s Spring Auction in Indianapolis but I don’t think anyone was prepared to see a 2009 Corvette ZR1 sell for $70,000. But that’s what happened when the VIN #0006 crossed the auction block Saturday afternoon.
Here is a comparison video from Japan’s Best Motoring TV show that puts the Lexus LFA against the Nissan GT-R, Corvette ZR1, Porsche 911 GT2 RS and the Ferrari F430 GT3 for a 3-lap attack at Fuji Speedway.
The comparison is epic proof of why we don’t put too much stock into comparisons as this was all about the drivers and their lack of familiarity with any car that wasn’t Japanese. The Corvette driver seemed particularly tentative in the corners and really failed to utilize one of the ZR1′s core strengths: brakes. Despite that minor observation, it’s always fun to see these epic sports cars battling on a track. You have to watch the video to find out how it ends.
I’m not sure if there is something in the water or if the moon is out of alignment, but there seems to be a recent rash of people getting trapped in Corvettes whose battery has died. We already told you of the one of guy who called 911 after getting locked in his Corvette ZR1, but here is another frustrated gentleman whose calls for help to his friends result in this hilarious video being posted on youtube.
Corvette owners are known for customizing their rides and for many that starts with their license plate. Vanity plates are a way for Corvette owners to express themselves and their show pride in their car although some owners have a sense of humor. While at the National Corvette Museum’s C5/C6 Bash, we encountered some many Corvettes sporting a custom vanity plates so we thought we’d share our favorites with you.
NASCAR team owner and Chevy dealer Rick Hendrick spent today at Wixon’s Performance Build Center to take part in the Corvette Engine Build program. Hendrick built his own 505 horsepower LS7 V8 which will go into his Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition.
GM North American President Mark Reuss brought some very good news to state and local community leaders in Bowling Green as well as for the 500 employees of the Corvette Assembly Plant and Corvette lovers everywhere. General Motors will be investing $131 million in the plant for upgrading tooling and machinery and will create as many as 250 new jobs in advance of producing the up-coming C7 Corvette.
Great news from General Motors today regarding the sales of America’s favorite sports car. In April 2011, sales of the Corvette shot up to 1,454 – the highest reported sales figure in the last 19 months! Deliveries last month were 33.5% higher than April 2010′s 1,089 and for Calendar Year to Date, General Motors has sold 4,293 to lead 2010′s 3,522 figure by 21.9%. Sales of Corvettes haven’t been this high since September of 2009 when 1,585 Corvettes were sold.
