In our final analysis of 2008′s Corvette prices, we present an overview of Corvette values by generation. This is an interesting time for Corvette buyers as many models are still showing appreciation despite the lagging market. And with some of the more collectible Corvettes giving back some of the pricing gains earned over the last couple of years, this could be a real buying opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts should the right Corvette present itself.

The following are highlights from our 2009 Corvette Price Guide:

1953-1962:
The first generation Corvettes had mixed results with some models showing a negative 5-7% depreciation factor, while on the plus side of the ledger appreciation results ranged for 2-9%. The high average price for this series was the 1953 Roadster at $294,500. At the low end of the price scale was the 1961 Roadster at an average price of $45,000, showing an appreciation factor of 2%. We expect the 1953 model to continue to show depreciation in average price with the majority of these solid axles showing positive results for the 2009 calendar year.

1963-1967:
The mid-years have regained the appreciation lead with all models showing an appreciation factor of 4-9%. The price leader in average price continues to be the 1967 Roadster at an average price of $61,000. The entry level price for the mid-years continues to be the 1964 Coupe at $35,000 in average price.

1968-1982:
The average price range for this generation of Corvettes starts at $9,200, the average price of a 1978 T- Top that showed no change in average price from last year. The average price for the series tops out at $29,500, the average price of the 1970 Roadster that showed an appreciation factor of 7%. The average price of the third generation Corvettes ranges from a depreciation factor of -8% to a +10% appreciation factor.

1984-1996:
There was quite a change last year in the average price for the fourth generation Corvette models. Our 2008 Price Guide showed many with single digit appreciation factors and a few in the double digit range. The 2009 Price Guide shows none in the appreciation column with two holding on as ‘no change’ in average price. Several are now showing double digit depreciation. The high average price for this series is $52,000, going to the 1996 Grand Sport Roadster. The low end is represented by the 1984 Coupe with an average price of $8,600 and a 1% depreciation factor. Hurting the average price of this series is the pricing of the C5 Corvettes with many selling under the $20,000 mark in average price.

1997-2004:
This series continues to show negative results in average price ranging from a -6% to -18%. The high average price for this series is $31,000, going to a 2003 Anniversary Roadster that showed a –9% depreciation factor. As we have said on numerous occasions, one buys a lot of Corvette power in this series for under $20,000. At some point soon, the double digit depreciation factors will improve to single digits.

2005-2009:
As expected, all models are showing double digit depreciation in average resale price. We don’t expect this to subside since average prices start at $31,500 for a 2005 Coupe and top out at $64,000 for the Ron Fellows Special Edition Z06. The state of the US economy will continue to have a major negative impact on the average price of these Corvettes.

Corvette Z06 Police Car

The National Corvette Museum put out a call yesterday for silver C5/C6 Corvette coupes that will be transformed into state police escorts for labor day’s National Corvette Caravan celebration. The coupes chosen for duty will have a lightbar and graphics installed and will lead each of the four national caravans converging on Bowling Green.

From the Corvette Museum:

Here is your chance to drive your Corvette down the highway decorated as a state police vehicle with a light bar on top and vehicle markings as the lead in for the caravan! We are looking for owners of four silver C5/C6 coupes that are willing to become State Police Caravan Escorts when four caravans cross into Kentucky. The four lead Corvettes, with help from the Kentucky State Police, will be fitted with vinyl State Police markings and working light bars. A KSP trooper will be your passenger and you will be assigned a border crossing point to meet a designated Caravan. If you are interested, email your contact information and a picture to events@corvettemuseum.org. We will hold a drawing May 15th and announce the four caravan lead vehicles. These Corvettes will also be the featured display on Thursday, September 3 during the event. In case you were wondering…no, you can’t keep the light bar or write tickets. These cars will need to be available on Wednesday and Thursday September 2-3.

In addition to the police escort cars, the NCM is putting together two other special displays. On Friday, September 4th, the NCM will host a “First and Last” display featuring a Corvette from the first and last year of each generation. On Saturday, September 5th, the Museum will display 12-15 Corvettes that were part of the original 1994 Corvette Caravan. If you are interested in participating in either of these displays, contact the national Corvette museum at events@corvettemuseum.org.

Would you like to join thousands of Corvettes from across the nation as they trek to Bowling Green for the 15th Anniversary celebration of the National Corvette Museum? Check out the Corvette Caravan for details on this unique experience.

Long and Winding Road: Paul McCartney's Blue C5 Corvette

I’ve been a Beatles fan for about as long as I’ve been a Corvette fan – which means pretty much my entire life, so this is a fun story for me to tell you about. Former cute-one Paul McCartney keeps a C5 Corvette at his LA home and is often seen driving it when he is on the West Coast. Paul was recently spotted strolling through LAX with new GF Nancy Shevell and the couple was photographed leaving the airport in Paul’s C5 Blue Convertible.

I believe Paul has owned this particular Corvette for some time. I remember watching a special about the recording of the 2005 CD “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard” and at one point the video showed Paul arriving at the LA recording studio in the blue C5 convertible.

Think about that for a sec. McCartney is one of the richest entertainers in the world with a net worth estimated to be a BILLION dollars. He can afford any car he wants – yet he keeps an older C5 Corvette as his personal car when in California. I think that says a lot, not only about McCartney, but about the performance and quality of the C5 generation of Corvettes.

And since I’ve already gotten way off topic with this post, let me continue with a quick plug of Paul’s latest album “Electric Arguments”. If you’re a McCartney or Beatles fan and you don’t have this disc in your collection, you are missing out. It’s Paul’s best work in several years and it’s a great listen. Check out The Fireman: Electric Arguments.

2004 Corvette Convertible - The Last C5 Convertible

Chevrolet dealer and noted collector Bob McDorman has brought nearly a dozen of his Corvettes to the Mecum auction in Kissimmee, Florida this weekend to sell. Unlike many of McDorman’s Corvettes that feature low VIN’s, lot #F266, a 2004 Corvette Convertible, has a high VIN at 31,945, but it is unique as it holds the distinction of being the last C5 convertible produced.

The last C5 Convertible is a 2004 Commemorative Edition Corvette, painted in LeMans Blue and outfitted with Shale interior, special embroidery and badges. Following production, the Corvette was sent over to the Museum where it was used as a “Give-Away” car. We are unsure of exactly how the Corvette came into possession of Bob McDorman, but like many Corvettes in his collection, the mileage is low with just 2,600 miles reading on the odometer.

This Corvette hit the Mecum auction block a little after 9pm on Friday night and was sold for $32,500. We thought it was a good deal for both buyer and seller as the price was in-line for a low mileage, condition 1 2004 Corvette convertible. The fact that it’s the last C5 Convertible and a former Bob McDorman Corvette will undoubtedly make it more valuable as time goes by.

[VIDEO] Guy Parks Corvette in his House

by Keith Cornett on December 4, 2008

Guy Parks Corvette in his House

I briefly considered the thought about attempting this at my house some years ago but it would have required too much renovation, loss of the dining room and severe disapproval from the wife. Still, if the opportunity ever arose, I’d do what this guy did – park his Corvette in the freaking living room!

This reminds me of a joke: “You know you are a gear head if…”

eBay: Charlton Heston’s 1999 Corvette For Sale

by Keith Cornett on April 15, 2008

Charlton Heston's 1999 Corvette Coupe

I think I’ve mentioned my affinity for guns, whisky and Corvettes in a previous post and although I can’t really claim the “all American guy” trifecta with this story, Meatloaf would say “two out of three ain’t bad”.

Charlton Heston, actor extraordinaire and 2nd Amendment rights champion was also a Corvette owner. His 1999 Black Corvette Coupe is currently listed for sale on eBay as the current owner looks to cash in on the death of the movie icon. The Corvette is a mostly stock automatic with just 18,500 miles. The current owner claims the only changes were new LED halo taillights, C6 style chrome wheels and a Borla Stinger exhaust system. The original factory rims and taillights also come with the car.

If you’re contemplating the purchase of the Corvette previously owned by Moses himself, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got more documentation than just a pencil with bite marks. Luckily for you, this Corvette comes with the actual registration and insurance card with “Chuck” Heston’s name and Wilshire Blvd address.

The auction runs through April 17th and the current bid of $20,800 has yet to break the reserve. “Cold Dead Hands” jokes aside, with the provenance of celebrity, this Corvette would give bragging rights to any owner.

Win The $100,000 Speed Racer Mach 5 Corvette

by Keith Cornett on April 11, 2008

Speed Racer Mach 5 Corvette
We’re pretty psyched about the live action Speed Racer movie coming out next month and what a better way promote the May 9th premiere than with a movie-inspired contest. Just know your stuff about Speed Racer and be pretty quick at sending a text message and maybe you’ll have a shot. The prize? How about a Speed Racer inspired Mach 5 Corvette? This over-the-top resto-mod was built on a C5 platform complete with the LS1 350 ci 350 hp engine and skinned with a custom C2 Corvette body. What I find really unique about this design is the front and rear chrome C2 bumpers have been integrated into the fiberglass as opposed to just being bolted on like an original 1963-1967 Corvette. We also notice the styling cues from a 1967 Corvette with the stinger hood, rear backup lights and of course the distinctive front quarter panel vents. Despite having the fuel tank door on the drivers side of the Corvette, the rear original (if you want to call it that) fuel filler door remains. The Corvette’s creators put the value of this one-of-kind custom at $100,000.

To enter the contest, you must visit RaceForSpeedRacer.com and enter your cell phone number or you can also enter by texting “fast” to 90736. On April 18th you’ll receive a Speed Racer trivia question and will have 2 minutes to reply with the correct answer. 10 people with the correct answer will be flown to the premiere and will have to race mini cars to determine the winner of the Mach 5 Corvette. Check out the trailer for Speed Racer on YouTube.com

Here is something that you don’t see everyday and in the words of the auctioneer, it’s probably something that will never be duplicated! We’re talking of course about the matched set of Corvettes that was sold at Saturday’s RM Auctions Al Wiseman Collection in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Al had a 1953 Corvette with the serial number of #39. When the 50th Anniversary Corvettes were produced in 2003, Al lobbied GM quite hard for about a year and was successful in buying serial number #39, which was doing duty as a test mule. Topping off the collection was a commemorative 1953 Corvette pedal car from Pedal Cars USA produced to celebrate the Corvette’s golden anniversary. This unique Corvette pedal car also is number #39 in its series.

The 1953 Corvette has been in Al’s collection for around 5 years and has just completed a full concours quality restoration. Al was no stranger to 1953 Corvettes. Back in 2002 he teamed up with Chip Miller of Carlisle Productions to restore serial #158. That Corvette, dubbed “Restoration Celebration”, was restored to better than perfect condition and the proceeds from the sale of that car were donated to charity.

Interestingly, the sale of both of these 1953 Corvettes ended up in the hands of the same buyer…Terry Michaelis of Proteam Corvettes.

And while the buyer and seller of both 1953 Corvettes remained the same, what has changed in the last five years is the prices commanded for the first year of America’s Sports Cars. #158 was purchased for $170,000 in 2002 while 1953 Corvette #39 brought in $390,500 just five years later.

Yes, this auction of the 1953 Corvette had the bonus of a serial numbers-matching 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette Roadster, as well as the kids commemorative pedal car, but it was the 1953 Corvette that drove this sale home.
