1989 Corvette ZR-1 Snake Skinner

This 1989 Corvette ZR-1 was the personal driver for GM’s John Heinricy who worked extensively to make the car lighter. The “Snake Skinner” Corvette was powered by a special Black version of the LT-5 Mercury Marine V8 and featured a host of performance upgrades. Rick Hendrick of NASCAR fame was on the stage during the bidding and purchased the GM Heritage car for $160,000.

One of 83 production 1989 ZR-1s built in Bowling Green. Led by Corvette Executive John Heinricy, this experimental light weight was aimed directly at maintaining Corvette’s performance supremacy. With a 475hp LT5 V8 and less weight, this vehicle became a legend at GM Performance. Includes Mercury Marine special built black motor.

1989 Corvette ZR-2 Sells at 2009 Barrett-Jackson

This 1989 Corvette ZR-2 was a factory engineering concept that answered that age old question: What would happen if we dropped a 454 in a C4 Corvette? In additional to the high horsepower engine, the concept was treated with a special orange exterior, ZR-2 badges and has been signed by GM development engineer/driver John Heinricy. This GM Heritage Collection Corvette sold at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction for $65,000.

This 1990 Corvette “Active” ZR-1 comes from GM’s Heritage Collection and features a unique Active Suspension designed to keep the Corvette level. One of the cooler tricks this C4 can do is the ability to lift one wheel off the ground using the hydraulics in the other three wheels. Painted in Black and sports ZR-1 badges. Sold at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction for $137,000.

eBay Find of the Day: The Cheaparral Sucker Vette

The Cheaparral Sucker Vette

Put together a group of crazy engineers, a totaled ’86 Corvette barn car and a challenge that most would walk away from and you’ve got the makings of a great story. The Cheaparral J2J “Sucker Vette” is the result of over 3,000 hours of hard work and advanced engineering skills and now it can be yours as the Corvette is being offered on eBay with proceeds benefitting the United Way.

A group of engineers at Proctor & Gamble got together and built this one of kind of custom Corvette to compete in the $2007 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge. The Challenge pits competitors in a number of events in a car that must cost less than $2,007.

The Cheaparral team found their 1986 Corvette parked in a nearby barn and purchased the wreck for $1,400. They then had to put their creative talents to work in keeping the costs to under the $2,007 spending limit. After the Corvette was made rode worthy and twin turbochargers were added for power, the engineers decided they needed a little something extra to give them more of an edge in the autocross competition.

The solution came in the form of an M1 Abrams tank cooling fan that was mounted in the passenger seat and powered by a snowmobile engine. The fan evacuates 10,000 cfm of air from underneath car which generates 1,000 lbs of downforce and allows the Corvette to pull 1.3g on a skidpad. The concept is similar to racing legend Jim Hall’s Chaparral 2J vaccum enhanced “sucker” car from the 1970 Can Am Racing series which served as inspiration for the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette”.

The Cheaparral team competed against 50 others at the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge in Gainsville, FL and won every category including the autocross, concourse, best-engineered award, top finishing team and the 2007 Challenge Overall Champion award.

Following the Challenge, the Sucker Vette has been featured in a number of magazines and at car shows including the Corvette Homecoming event in Bowling Green. The Cheaparral recently made a trip out to the west coast to Jay Leno’s garage where the noted auto enthusiast proclaimed the Corvette “cool”.

The ebay auction of the Cheaparral “Sucker Vette” will benefit the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. The Corvette features the signitures of Jay Leno and Jim Hall who both had the opportunity to give the “sucker Vette” a drive. Bidding started at the team’s investment of $2,007 and the auction runs through December 11th.

Custom 4-Door Corvette is Fun for the Whole Family

1987 Corvette 4-Door with Suicide Doors

One of the curses, or blessings depending on your outlook is the fact that the Corvette is a 2-seat sports car. Room enough for you and a buddy or your significant other, but no more. Gene Swatek thought the Corvette should be a car that could be enjoyed by the whole family, so he custom built what I am sure is the world’s only 1987 four-door Corvette.

The father of four girls got the idea for the custom 4-seater after going to Corvette shows and wishing he could take more of his family. To create his 4-door sports car, Gene took a driver quality stock 1987 corvette and it in half. He made his own steel extension frame members to stretch the Corvette an additional 38 inches. The rear suicide doors were added as well as the rear leather seats and custom ground effects.

Gene says the Corvette took about 18 months to build and while he had plans to custom build a convertible top that could stretch over the extended passenger area, time got away from him and he never got around to doing it. According to Gene, the convertible is so much fun, who needs a top or windows anyways!

The FamilyVette II as its called is the second of Gene’s elongated Corvette creations, hence the II. His first FamilyVette was a red 1984 limo-styled Corvette made from 2/3′s of the front of one Corvette and 2/3′s of the rear from another. You can see more of his work at www.familyvettes.com.

The white 1987 Corvette is currently for sale with a listing on eBay but no bids have yet to have been laid on the custom car yet. The auction ends on November 18th and the starting bid is $12,000.

Vince McMahon's Corvette gets filled with Cement

I just came across this classic clip from a WWE Raw event that aired in October, 1998. I never followed wrestling but it appears that wrestler Steve Austin and WWE founder Vince McMahon have a love-hate relationship. That relationship must have been even more strained after this event which culminated in Austin filling McMahon’s early C4 Corvette Coupe with cement.

Of course this stunt was planned to boost ratings as this telecast was one of the first wrestling events to air on the USA network on a Monday Night, facing NFL Monday Night Football as well as WCW wrestling on TNT. In an LA Times interview about the stunt, McMahon says he picked a Corvette to make his entrance because, “if you’re going to destroy a car, make it worth destroying.”

C4 Corvettes Damaged by Hurricane Ike

Here’s a photo of two C4 Corvettes that were severely damaged by Hurricane Ike. In addition to the physical damage, I am sure both cars were thoroughly waterlogged as well.

Unfortunately, having looked through some of the photo galleries of Ike’s fury and knowing what a huge state for Corvettes that Texas is, I am sure we’ll be seeing a lot more. Just hope everyone was okay. Cars can be replaced, people can’t.

The VoltVette: Man Builds a Plug-In Electric Corvette

Michael Shoop and his Electric 1978 Corvette

What do you do if you want an electric car but don’t want to pay the more than $26,000 for a Prius? Oh, and you want a car that looks cool too? If you’re Michael Shoop, you enlist a few buddies, buy a 1987 Corvette and build your own. A year after envisioning a 100% electric-powered car, the VoltVette was born.

According to Shoop, the 1987 Corvette is the perfect platform for the do-it yourself project. Its fiberglass body is lightweight, and the clamshell hood which opens forward which makes it easier to work on. Shoop removed the 240-hp engine and replaced with a specially designed electric car motor. The Corvette is now powered by 13 lead 12-volt batteries which produce 156 volts of power that translates to 200 horsepower. The batteries weigh 70 pounds each are a stored in both the engine compartment and cargo area for balance.

Performance unfortunately is lacking. The 1987 Corvette was designed with a top speed of 149 mph. The VoltVette reached 30 mph on its maiden drive. Shoop could reprogram the Volt Vette to boost the horsepower up to 800, but there’s a catch – he’d need an additional 40 batteries.

And then there’s the torque factor. Like all electric powered cars, the VoltVette generates a massive amount of torque. While trying to increase the power to hit 70 mph he cracked the driveshaft. With a new driveshaft installed as well as some down-home ingenuity that now gives the ’87 Corvette power steering, the VoltVette can reach a top speed of 40 mph.

Shoop estimates the VoltVette costs around 3-cents per mile to operate. Not bad considering the Toyota Prius costs around 7-cents per mile based on $3.50/gallon gas. Electric motors are more reliable as well according to Shoop, “The car industry makes money on parts, repairs and maintenance, and that’s why it hates the electric car.”

The VoltVette was built for under $26,000 which included the cost of the car. “I figured I would get it done, and have the pleasure of cruising by a gas station and maybe waving.”

1989 Corvette Destroyed by Fireworks

Chicago area resident Rich Szatkowski spent the 4th of July finishing the interior restoration of his prized 1989 Corvette: New seats, new carpet, new steering wheel and a new stereo. As he washed the carpet earlier in the day, he left the roof panel off so it could dry out properly. Unfortunately, a neighborhood firework found its way through the open roof, igniting the interior and destroying the Corvette.

The news gets even worse for Rich. Because the car was undergoing restoration and was not being driven, Rich did not have insurance on the Corvette.

1984 Corvette ZR1 – The Custom Vettamino Edition

I haven’t checked to see if there is a full moon out or not, but for whatever reason we are coming across a full spectrum of Corvette oddities this week. Yesterday it was the 1954 custom Corvette Hardtop we spotted on Craigslist. Today its a Chevy Vettamino, a chopped 1984 Corvette with a very El Camino-like bed for those trips to Home Depot or for helping your friend move a couch.

The brains behind this $115,000 (no kidding!) modification was the original owner of Bayliner Boats who unfortunately has passed. Like most over-the-top customizations, the Corvette is listed for just a fraction of that amount at $35,000 or best offer which according to our Corvette Price Guide is still $14,000 higher than the $21,000 high price for a Condition 1 1984 Coupe.

The Corvette does feature some nice upgrades like the 1991 rear end fashioned into a functional tailgate and the chrome C4 ZR-1 wheels. But its the ZR-1 badge on the back that makes us wonder exactly what is hiding under the hood.

The ad states that the sellers missed the deadline to have this car entered into the Barrett Jackson auto auction, which of course means “Only a drunk rich guy whose a member of the More Money than Brains club” would buy it. But hey, their loss is your gain, right? Now if it only had a topper…
