Corvette Market’s C3 Find, Buy & Drive Adventure

Here is the deal: You find them a decent C3 Corvette to buy and if they decide that’s the one, they’ll wire the funds to the seller. They are looking for delivery as well so you’ll need to be able to drive the Corvette all the way or at least partially the way to their offices in Portland, Oregon.

The staff at Sports Car Market likes to keep half a dozen classic and collector cars on hand at any one time, driving them to shows and weekend cruises. They believe the C3 Corvette Market (1968-1982) represents some of the best Corvette values and adding a chrome-bumper C3 to the stable makes a lot of sense. However, not just any C3 Corvette will do as they are being specific in what they are looking for:

  • 1968-1972 Convertible
  • Matching numbers small block
  • 4-Speed manual transmission
  • Air conditioning
  • Quality condition

And to make things even more interesting, they have budgeted just $20,000 for you to make the deal, although they are willing to pay less. If you find and deliver the Corvette, they’ll put you up in a hotel for a couple of nights, show you the sights and even provide some cool swag like a Corvette Market hat and bag! But the biggest thrill may be seeing your C3 Corvette buying adventure immortalized in print for all the Collector car world to see.

An L88 Corvette is used to shaking the world around it, but at the Mecum High Performance Auction in St. Charles, Illinois last weekend, an extremely low mile one owner 1969 Corvette L88 shook the auction world by selling for $446,250. Previous high of a 1969 L88 sold at an auction was set back in January 2006 at Barrett-Jackson for $334,800. The L88 engine was rated at 430 hp and featured an aluminum intake and heads, an 850 cfm dual feed Holley carb and mandatory options like an aluminum radiator, heavy duty brakes and the Muncie M-22 transmission. Power windows, power steering and radios were not included to discourage street use. The L88 added over $1,000 to the base price of a 1969 Corvette, which was $4,781. Only 116 L88 Corvettes were built in 1969. The Corvette that sold at St. Charles is one of the most highly documented, low mileage Corvettes in existence. Rare for any 1969 Corvette, much less an L88. The Corvette retains its original matching numbers engine, transmission, carburetor and interior. Only 2,248 miles are on the one-owner car.

Like many L88 Corvettes, this car was destined for the track. Purchased by Dennis Ahrens from Dick Wickstrom Chevrolet in Roselle, Illinois on December 12, 1969, the Corvette was prepped to be a drag racer, achieving a best time of 10.82 seconds in the quarter mile. Many of the Corvette’s original parts were set aside and saved during her racing days, only to be reunited later when the owner restored her back to factory specifications in 2005-06. Since restoration, the Corvette has received Bloomington Gold Certification, NCRS National Top Flight, Gold Spinner Award and the Triple Crown Award with all scores at 97, 98 or 99. The Corvette today sits on three of four original wheels and has the original spare tire. It is believed to be one of the last three L88′s ever produced and is the only known L88 with red exterior and tan interior. It is also one of only 25 delivered with a 4.56 positraction rear end. The Corvette is fully documented with the original window sticker, Protect-O-Plate, dealer sales invoice and order form, tax and license receipt and the owner’s manual. Topping of the impressive list of docs is the Illinois Title in the original owner’s name. We’ll have more results from the Mecum St. Charles auction over the coming days.

Corvette Poker: Trumping an Automatic Big Block

I took a call today from Robert in Wisconsin who had some questions about early 1970′s Corvettes. His question was should he sell his 1972 Corvette Coupe with a 454 ci engine and an automatic transmission for a 1971 Corvette Convertible with a 350 ci engine and a 4-speed. Like many classic Corvette owners, he was torn between the big block power of the 1972 and the convertible/4-speed combo in the 1971. He wanted a convertible, loved the idea of a 4-speed, but thought he’d miss the power of the big block 454 engine. But in his reasoning, it always came back to what was the more valuable car, so Robert’s major concern was holding the right Corvette from an investment standpoint. Let’s look at the 1972 Corvette by the numbers. Robert had a T-Top Coupe with an automatic and the 454 ci 270 hp engine. 20,496 Corvette T-Top Coupes were produced in 1972, which accounted for 75% of Corvette production. The LS5 454 was chosen by 3,913 buyers, and had an option penetration of 14%. The horsepower ratings were lowered in 1972 from gross to net, which makes the horsepower output a more realistic “real-world” rating. A/C was an option chosen by 63% of buyers and the automatic transmission was chosen by 54% of buyers. Our Corvette Price Guide places an average 1972 T-Top Coupe at $18,900. We add $6,000 for the 454 and $3,000 for the factory air conditioning, so our average 1972 is now valued at $27,900.

A labor strike shortened production of the 1971 Corvette. Only 21,801 Corvettes were produced, with 33% being Convertibles. 67% of all Corvettes featured the base engine, a 350 ci 270 hp power plant, and the base 4-speed was installed in 42% of 1972 Corvettes. Our average price on a 1971 Corvette Convertible is $23,500 I confirmed these values with Bob Kroupa, who writes for several of the Corvette magazines and publishes his own monthly newsletter, the Vette-N-Vestment’s Corvette Market Letter and he agreed that the 1972 Corvette Coupe with the 454 and AC would be valued higher than the 1971 roadster with a standard 350 ci and a 4-speed. I initially thought the 1971 Convertible with a 4-Speed coupled to a 350/270 would be worth more than a 1972 automatic Coupe with a 454/270 and AC. But only 14% of ’72 Vettes have the big block option and combined with the C60 Air option, there was no chance in overcoming that hand. So what trumps an automatic big block Corvette Coupe? For Robert, it just may be that feeling of driving down a Wisconsin road with the top down and the summer air blowing around you while shifting through the gears of the 4-speed.

The 1969 Corvette was very similar to the 1968 Corvette, the first of the C3 generation. In 1968 and 1969, there were four vents behind the front wheels. Only in 1969 did a Stingray script appear about those vents. Side mount exhaust and trim inside the four vents also differentiated the 1969 model from the 1968 Corvette. 1969 Corvette Highlights:
The Stingray moniker was reintroduced on the 1969 Corvette, however this time it was spelled as one word instead of two. The 1969 Corvette featured the first base engine with a displacement of 350 cubic inches. The steering wheel was reduced in size from 16 inches to 15 inches. A strike caused production of the 1969 Corvette to run an additional four months, through December 1969, which resulted in the largest single year production of Corvettes at that time. 1969 Corvette Values:
The 1969 Corvette has become one of the most popular Corvettes to own in the last few years, so much so that the five year appreciation rate for the Convertible model is an astounding 51% while the Coupe is 46%. Average prices are in the affordable mid $20,000′s and it is not uncommon to see the Big Block collectibles upwards of $80,000.

Video: Real Life Superhero Drives A 1975 Corvette

If you though the only cape-wearing superhero driving a Corvette is Rick “Superman” Conti, then you haven’t heard about this real life dogooder from Clearwater, Florida named “Superhero”. “Superhero” is a self-proclaimed police advocate who provides logistical and backup support for local law enforcement. Every hero needs a special mode of transportation and so “Superhero” drives a 1975 Corvette, motoring up and down the local roads offering roadside assistance to those in need. Click the video to learn more about “Superhero”. We wish there were more people out there like him…looking after the little guys while driving a 75 Stingray!

Corvette Summer Promo Car Sells on eBay

Corvette Summer Promo Car

Nearly 30 years after Mark Hamill and Annie Potts drove a hideous custom Corvette to B-Movie success, one of the movie’s promotional cars was offered up and sold on eBay this morning for $30,000. The buyer appears to be from the Volo Auto Museum based on his current listings.

This isn’t the original Corvette Summer car, as that had a right-wheel drive conversion and the cool bowtie tail lights. That car is part of the collection owned by MA Motorworks owner Mike Yeager.
