We first told you about this highly decorated 1969 L88 convertible back in August 2012 when it was about to cross Mecum’s Anaheim auction block. There it was bid to $550,000 and did not sell. Last week it traversed Gooding and Co’s Scottsdale auction stage and hammered sold for $750,000. Throw in the 10% buyer’s fee and the new owner wrote a check for $825,000 to take this baby home.
As Barrett-Jackson and five other of the most prestigious collector car auctioneers in the world wrapped up their elaborate events in Scottsdale, Arizona last weekend, the largest collector car auction in the world was just getting started. Though there are differing opinions on the subject, in Mecum Auctions’ case, Size Does Matter!
We’ve taken a look at all of the January auctions so far except one, Mecum’s 10 day, 3,000-car uber-auction in Kissimmee, Florida. Their first event of 2013 kicked off Friday, January 18th and runs all the way through next Sunday, January 27th. The Velocity network will have 32 hours of live coverage starting on Wednesday the 23rd.

Gooding & Company focuses on “blue chip” investment cars and usually sets a few world record prices each year in Scottsdale. Gooding is known for selling exceptional quality classic automobiles and producing the highest prices paid for exotic cars at such esteemed venues as Pebble Beach and Amelia Island in addition to Scottsdale and they have the statistics to back up those claims. The average price realized for a car throughout 2012 was $640,635 per car.
Continuing our Corvette Enthusiast’s Preview of the Scottsdale Auctions, we next take a look at the Russo and Steele auction which will feature over 40 Corvettes.
Russo & Steele expect to auction 700 cars in their five day event hosted in their impressive spired tents. The Scottsdale 2013 catalog has just been released and it is filled with sports, muscle, hot rods and customs, the types of cars they specialize in. Quality consignments are a major focus and they try hard to offer individual personalized attention as well as a commitment to not let a car get “lost” because of too many consignments.
Barrett-Jackson is the largest and most extravagant of the five major collector car auctions taking place during the week of January 13. Over 1,200 cars including 125 Corvettes will cross the famous auction block with SPEED providing nearly 40 hours of live gavel coverage. Craig Jackson and his team put on more than an auction…they produce an extravaganza not to be missed.

I was talking to a friend the other day about the impending end of the C6 Corvette. We theorized where that last 2013 Corvette would turn up. What auction it may show up at, whose collection it could end up in, and what it options it would have. Coincidentally a new thread popped up on Corvette Forum last month inquiring as to the location of the last C3 Corvette. As it turns out, that’s the only “last” Corvette we can’t account for. We know where the last C1, C2, C4, and C5′s are, but where is 1982 Corvette VIN 25407?
Mecum Auctions continues to release details on some of the outstanding Corvettes they’ve got lined up for their Kissimmee auction later this month. In addition to a Survivor 1963 Z06 and the ‘entombed’ 1954 Corvette, this mega rare 1971 ZR2 will be crossing the block on Saturday January 27th around 4pm EST.
My 13-year-old son loves Corvettes and four-wheel drive trucks. This Craigslist find is definitely right up his alley, but will someone who actually has a driver’s license feel the same love, enough to pay “a firm” $2,500 for this 1978 C3 that’s been raised off the ground and turned into a four-wheel driver.

Going to school every day is a cool ride these days for the automotive technology students at Trenton High School in Michigan.
They’re in the second year of restoring this yellow 1980 Corvette.
The students began work on the car during the 2011-12 school year after owner Jim Schneider, a 68-year-old Vietnam veteran, decided the Corvette would be better used as an instructional tool, rather than wasting away at his home.
